England manager Sarina Wiegman has said her team must remain proud despite their disappointment after losing 1-0 to Spain in the Women's World Cup final.
Spain captain Olga Carmona produced a sublime strike to win the tournament, with La Roja winning the trophy for the first time.
Despite half-time substitutions of Chloe Kelly and Lauren James for Alessia Russo and Rachel Daly, and a superb penalty save from Mary Earps, England were unable to find a way back into the match.
Anton Toloui and Sue Smith discussed the Lionesses tournament as a whole and what the side may be thinking following their time in Australia.

England wasn't at their best bar the China game, missed 3 keys players and still reached the final. No match whatsoever for the Spanish but England is proud of them. Every tournament now mens and womens, we are finally reaching the latter stages and it makes the tournaments more fun to watch. On to the mens euros next year.

12 best spanish players didnt play the Tournament
im no commentator (and a lot of them dont like to tell the truth and just like to sugar-coat stuff) the problem was Lucy Bronze coming out of position to take on 3 spanish midfielders only to lose the ball and leave that left side open that led to a goal. The passing has been horrendous an not being able to keep hold of the ball, all spain did was play the diamond formation passing around us.....made us look like a sunday pub team. Bringing Russo off at half time was crazy, she is our main natural striker that will always give you hope of a goal....i dont know what sarina was thinking there. Good players on the bench she never used i feel are better than stanway or Toone, walsh was noway near fit or in form throughout this tournament. Starting to remind me of gareth southgate now with sticking with favourites regardless of form. Still....welldone spain...we gave them the easiest final game they will possibly ever have.

Good job by the Lionesses team during the World Cup 2023 matches. They can be proud of what they achieved, played the finals. The Spanish team played better that day. Neither England team nor Spain were ranked number 1. So, good job, to the team and coaches and all support staff who all went with the Lioness team to play in the World Cup 2023. In one month old ranking I saw, Spain original non-selected main team was 6th and the Lionesses were ranked 7th, in terms of probability of winning the World Cup. Spain substitute team playing 11 which went to play the World Cup may have been ranked about 20th, in terms of chances of winning.
Did very well, but didnt turn up when it mattered. If that would have been the mens team , a turnip would definitely be on the front pages on southgate's face .

they play very well for the whole tournament, i couls say the schedule arrangement not good, the Spain team has one more day rest for the finl match, before the final, each game has 5 days rest, but the semi final and the final match only has two - three days rest! I could see some England players tired

Daly should never have been playing LWB (should have been Niamh Charles) & Russo shouldn't have been taken off in the final.
The Lionesses did very well to reach the final, but it showed that Williamson, Kirby & Mead were all truly missed & lets hope they go 1 better in 2027 with a stringer team..

@foundation6867: That's the main problem with women's football.....the standard of refereeing is terrible. Most of the games (not just the England games) suffered from bad referee decisions. Luckily VAR got it right most of the times.

They weren’t exactly 12, more like 7, because some of these girls were not called for technical reasons. Among the 7 though, were their best defender (Mapi León) and their player most in form at the end of the season (Patri Guijarro), so your point is absolutely right.

Only one team can win. There were many good teams in the cup (Japan and France among my personal favourites for different reasons). The brutal truth is good tema lose because only one win. The Lionesses still deserve praise. Spain lost against Japan, so it's also about what happens in that particular sloth of time. If LJ had started and Engalnd had got the early leaad... if Beth Mead and Leah W hadn't been injured... bla bla. They are not hopeless just because they lost against a very strong Spanish side.

Mate Australia has gone potty about the Matildas coming fourth. The new participants are elated at their countries competitive performances even though most didn't get out of the group stages.
The problem is unrealistic expectations. You think you should win every football tournament because you codified the game 150 odd years ago.

Spain had 9 Barcelona players in the team. When you have that many players who play together week in, week out, the National Team are going to be good. Arsenal did it with French players under Arsène Wenger. They won the Euro's and World Cup. Proud of what our ladies achieved.
