The common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) is a large species in the dove and pigeon family. It belongs to the genus Columba and, like all pigeons and doves, belongs to the family Columbidae. It is locally known in southeast England as the "culver"
This name has given rise to several areas known for keeping pigeons to be named after it, such as Culver Down.

since i was a little kid, wood pigeons have been my favorite birds. I had this book with different birds and their calls and i’d replay the wood pigeon one over and over again😭we moved from a countryside to a small town in 2019 and i haven’t heard them since. i tried finding their official name in english (non-native speaker) a while back but couldn’t, but now i found it and im so happy that i can hear this sound once again

Currently living in Germany and I have fallen in love with the sound of these birds. I feel like they come to tell me “ITS TIME TO WAKE UP!!” I always hear another type of bird call back to it and wonder what they could be talking about

I travelled to Hungary from Canada this year. Somehow, this ended up being my favourite of the bird calls I heard there, and probably the first aural reminder that I was now far away from Canada.

If the many I get in the garden my favourite is called Fatso ! He is now obese. Oh yes, he has two dishes in his pole and makes sure that they are left empty. A few hours later, he finds them full again......well, they do not stay that way for long. 😊

These have only in the last few years made an appearance where I live in Yorkshire. Remember them well from my Kent childhood in the 70s. Was a real wtf moment when I heard it up here 40 years later!
Weird, because they're endemic to northern England. I grew up in West Yorkshire and we always had them.
All saying this is the soundtrack to summer holidays... For here it's more Spring.
In Summer from 4am to 11pm its constant herring gull screeching drowning out everything else.

That's some kind of a huge battle pigeon.
Just by looking at those really funny birds I often get the impression that they could be the true masters of trolling.

Hoping to return to the UK soon, I miss hearing these birds. They’re quite adaptive, they make nests under bridges where people put spikes to prevent them from nesting. Extra protection for them.
