- Getting Groomed by Olivia. Unfortunately, Olivia was kept as a pet for ten years so she was never able to be successfully introduced into a social group or released into the wild. She was diagnosed with cancer and was humanly euthanized in 2012.

Most monkeys groom in two different ways. One is to show respect or subservience to an older monkey higher up in the hierarchy. The other way is social grooming where everyone just comes together on bonds. the little lip smacking that she is doing is a sign she is socially grooming and she would expect you to groom her back, otherwise you could actually hurt her feelings in a way

Why do the smack?
I don't know but for some reason I find this type of videos relaxing and soothing.
Wish we got some more high quality videos of Sweet Pea being groomed before he 'left'
its a a calming gesture, to mean no harm, more less.
I'm assuming that if they like you, you're going to be groomed.

Grooming doesn't necessarily mean the monkey finds something, it can be a social bonding mechanism along with a precautionary measure to look for anything not supposed to be in there.
We also need to factor in that as the description mentions, this monkey never grew up socializing with others of the same kind, and being kept as a pet might have made him do these things either because the owners made him do so, or because to a degree instinct tells the animal to perform this procedure, even though the animal doesn't find anything.

That's a baboon not a monkey. Lots of them when you drive up the mountain here where I live in Africa.

does it or can it really hurt when they groom you? I dont mean accidental snags and stuff, but I see them sometimes really pick and dig into like nails, my only thought is that hurts, especially if they get a nice chunk of skin they want removed.
I saw cat grooming and now this. Cats just seem to lick without much thinking. Monkeys, however, seem as if they are trying to find something. They use their hands to search here and there first and then lick. Possibly, parasites? Humans like this woman probably do not have any conspicuous parasites on their hair. Then why did the monkey choose those specific spots to lick?

Its so sad she got cancer and had to be put down ! but it was better then her having to suffer , i bet you enjoyed your time there , i hope to go and stay for a few months some day , right now i have a elder i have to attend too and that come first

Its funny you mention that it calms the monkey they are grooming.. cause it sure was calming me as well.
Epicerror your talking about the greeting lip smacking which is a bit louder and flappier. that signals well meaning intentions and love. the soft lip smacking is as i said, it helps sooth and it's a sort of compulsion like foot tapping.
That's incorrect. You may want to research on it. Majority of the time, its done when grooming and they begin lip smacking more when grooming vulnerable areas of the body such as the face. Its communicating a friendly "I am going to be touching there".
Epicerror i have done research on it, both through study and observation.
monkeys make a number of lip smacks. also even with in a species different monkeys have different grooming noises.
we could be arguing semantics as it would have similar effects on the monkey.
but if it was to say ok I'm touching you in this sensitive spot, why doesn't it change as she moves to other body parts.
also as a primate yourself dont the gentle noises put you into calm state?

She’s smacking her lips, they make that noise when grooming to show that they are just trying to help, it’s also like us concentrating and sticking out tongue out a little
