    Always looking for new techniques and ideas about flying the Cardinal. I really like your thorough pre-flight inspection.

    Yes, I own a Cardinal 177B. N19274 in Pennsylvania. Great aircraft!

    Nice preflight. Nice to see you checked your sumps in the wing but in the 1968 Cardinal I flew there was a drain located next to the oil dip stick. I always check the static port as well. One thing I'm careful with is inhaling around the stall warning. A friend of mine did and managed to get a number of bugs for a snack.

    Great airplane, flew the RG. Always thought it could use a little more horsepower.

    I fly the 180 hp version. I like it much better than a 172 since it doest have the struts in the way of your view. Also just better lines. Also I just got back from Auatralia and NZ. Didn't get a chance to fly there though.

    Nice video! I sold my '77 C-177B recently due to health problems which I expect to get over & resume flying as a renter. My only criticism is that you showed yourself away from the door while it was open. Because of the big "sail" doors, you should never do that. Mike

    Curious about the fuel vent extensions pointing what looks to be forward into the slip stream. Why?

    That is an old bird my friend. Haven't seen a 150hp cardinal in quite some time. Not to be too critical but his preflight should have included checking the wheels and front strut

      Thanks for your feedback. He does normally check those but I'd say he forgot on this one (camera nerves perhaps? 😀)

    Nice plane, but that avionics stack is ancient.

      Haha I'll let him know that he needs to update it!

      @@HighSchoolScience101 I don't know what it is like in Australia, but in America I'd be severely limited in what I could do with those avionics. Almost all of our NDBs are gone so the ADF is only good for listening to am AM radio station for fun. Transponder he has probably isn't mode C so legally I couldn't fly out of my base because it's very busy airspace. With no NAV CDIs on your dad's avionics stack there I wouldn't be able to do much IFR flying, no WAAS GPS would limit me on a lot of approaches too. The C177 is a nice plane so once your dad gets like 20 grand to upgrade he should probably do it. If he was flying a 152 I'd say fuck it, but the Cardinal is a plane that should be set up to do at least a moderate amount of IFR. I can tell though your dad probably doesn't give a shit since he likely uses his iPad for nav mostly. Which is fine.

      I asked Dad about his new setup:
      "The avionics setup is -
      Collins com selector
      VHF radio
      2nd VHF radio
      Garman 296 GPS
      Transponder
      Intercom controller
      Looks and works much better. The original ADF is now on the far starboard side under the small glove box. Don't use it but it fills a hole in the panel haha"

    What is the box above the transponder with the big knob in the middle?

    • @HighSchoolScience101
      @HighSchoolScience101  4 роки тому +1

      The box above the transponder is an old ADF - Automatic Direction Finder. Pretty much obsolete these days. He's moved it to under the small glove box and uses it to listen to the AM radio stations now.

    Does the pilot fly from the right seat in the land down under?

    • @HighSchoolScience101
      @HighSchoolScience101  5 років тому +1

      Hi Jason, the pilot in command sits on the port side, except when a student is learning to fly - they sit on the port side and the instructor sits on the starboard side.

    Great video! My only constructive criticism would be to work on that death grip on the yoke. One hand, 3 fingers. Don't try to choke it!

    • @HighSchoolScience101
      @HighSchoolScience101  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for the feedback. As for the deathgrip - It was due to it being a really gusty day and we hit some decent turbulance.
