Was kind of expecting to see those heat pads run with the usb doctor or such to see what they consume. Also, I think the 2 amp and 1 amp outlet from the power bank are there as a convenient way to select how many amps you want to feed to your device. I would not expect to be using both at the same time at full power.
07:03 You're right, they are called CCTV-Plugs because CCTV-Cameras (at least the older ones) had just connectors for wires (kinda like Wago-Terminals). 10:10 Adding a wire in between the Resistor and the Meter would add additional resistance wich would lead to a wrong measurement (A Resistor with Wire and plug (JST-XH, for example) would've been better, because you could attach it to a component when the meter is used inside a housing (e.g. a Power Supply)) Cool Postbag, keep'em coming! :-)
I have a video on my channel about those dummy loads. I used my Flir One to monitor their temps. I've got another video going live in the coming days where I try to cool them down by using a heatsink and fan. Out of the box, they get up to 120C within a couple of minutes, which is the top range of my thermal camera.
If you are careful, that offset within the display can be corrected. I do love those types of displays. (Edit) I spoke too soon, didn't I. I should have known you would not tolerate that misalignment. Love your style Julian!
Hi Julian, I don't think you are reading the outputs on the power banks correctly. Although one is rated at 2.1A and one at 1A, there is likely a total of 2.1A available. Thus, when you draw 2A from the one port you have maxed it out.
+Digger D yes very likely a single dc converter rated for 2a, with different resistor signalling 1 or 2a port, although my own powerbank runs very hot indeed above 1a, i dont think it can really cope with 2a, plus the voltage drops too much to really get the 2a.
re alice = li tan sheng?, Ive got this habit of checking out the origin of oriental ebay purchases on google earth and Ive noticed that lots of cheapo electronic things I get from various well known hong kong sellers (the bag Ive got right now which had a power bank in it is from lakeyx101, but also the likes of delhanway, finetech, sayhello etc) are id'd on the bag as coming from a mr yuan in flat 7e/f, industrial buildings, 20 wang hoi road, kowloon. but I also recognise that tower 2, century gateway address and I dont believe Ive ever bought from alice. also I occasionally get things from delhanway (all listed as item location = hong kong) arriving from an address in vientiane, laos. so theres either two hong kong ebay overlords, mortal enemies no doubt, one based at century gateway and one in wang hoi road who both control multiple seller accounts, or perhaps more likely the various sellers are using common warehousing and/or mailing services.

those heaters could be nice sown in a layer you can drop into your motorcycle jacket and plug it into the bike. That meter came with instructions, it must be way above the usual budget. :)
I bought one of those heater gillets for my wife a couple of years ago for quite a bit more than £10. The battery life means it has sat in the cupboard for the last 2 years but I'm curious of switching the batteries to 18650 lithium packs to see if I can improve it. The battery boxes just have 2.1mm sockets on them so it would be easy to change.
For our Russian and Canadian friends, the USB power resistor testers can also be used as feet warmers ;-) Should get a list of stuff you test before you post your youtube video Julian, every nice thing that you test is always out of stock after you publish it.
It looks like the wires to the heater pads have a greater resistance than the elements themselves. It wouldn't surprise me if they've used aluminium or steel wire rather than copper. John Ward has got a thing about this - see his dangerous multi-way extension videos.
No doubt the warmers (something I considered getting recently) use wires with thick insulation but very thin conductors (and possibly not even copper). You could probably boost the efficiency of the pads quite a bit by changing the wire.
Nice M8! I bougth the meter 3 weeks ago, ill use it on my PV. I've tried using the Wattmeters, but they only work as long as the sun is making enough power. This device should be able to give me data on several days. OMG, are we related... I also got the 1-2A power 'tester'. Mine got 175 Celsius... A bit to warm for me....

Can you do more "component" type videos? Stuff like new sensors, interesting or obscure parts, or even dev boards? Or, maybe focus less on the features of these finished products and more on the engineering behind the devices?
Have you had any problems with OLED screens going bad? I have had a couple now, one on a very fancy phone watch, this was pre-apple watch but offered some really great options along with video player and of course the mandatory bluetooth audio player etc. After a couple of years the color OLED went all red then after a short time died. The same thing happened with my Archos 104 MP3 Player with a color Oled screen. It still shows in a dark room but not if there is any background light. Sort of like the old Military dim RED screens that would not give away a soldiers position by the red glow of his radio lights.
Do you still have the USB warmers? If they aren't to be used is it worth testing them with a higher voltage maybe 2 18650s in series to see if they get warmer? That's what I want to try but shipping is going to be weeks.

at the end of the video you say the resistors are in parallel, they are seriesed, if the were parallel, THEN they would be half rated. this is because it is esseniall stacking them together, and their cross section is twice as much, ergo, their resistance is halfed
i wounder if the yellow wire for measuring voltage also triggers the run time clock if so be good if it went solar panel side of the diode as this would show how many watts produced over x amount of time
Maplin must have been selling that jacket for at least ten years. I remember looking at it when I first got a motorbike, but I never got one. Whoah, I almost bought that EC tech power bank, good thing I got the Anker with actual working 2x 2,4A output :D At first I was like "The EC tech is cheaper!" . Then, after reading the reviews for both, the Anker seemed to have extremely well support, even in my native language, but the EC tech one has pretty much 0 support and no answers on e-mails etc. \o/

You can get a programmable load for about $20. Got to be better than those green resistor things. I have the EBD mini v3.. I had to write my own firmware for it as it has a bug switching between the two different gains it can measure the input voltage at and the display sometimes gets stuck at 6v which is the top of the best resolution measurement. But... for these power banks that shouldn't matter and they even have some junky software to control it, plot the readings etc over USB.
the wire for those warmers will be dissipating quite a lot of the energy and may stop the heaters from getting as warm as they should, why don't you cut them off and replace them with thicker wire?

Julian it's useless saying LED screens vs LCD, as both are actually LCD. The first LCD's used like a fluorescent type back light and now the newer ones today use LED back lighting and they call them LED monitors and TV's, but they are actually the same old LCD's, just with different back lighting and more pixels. It's only the new OLED technology that is actually a new and different thing and you can't get those in TV's or monitors yet in stores. I think some Korean or Japanese company showed like a 40cm prototype monitor like 3 years ago or something but they haven't even made it into the market yet except for these tiny screens on watches or small scale electronics like some of the things you show. It could be another 10 years until OLED's are easily available for monitors in a store.

Yes, on an old Sony bluetooth speaker - can't remember the model number, something 200 - the OLED went really dim, almost invisible :(

Strange I got two USB load sticks from alice1101983 with a rocker switch. These don't seem to have any problem with 2 amps.

I get the feeling some USB battery bank will detect dead short and shut off, technically the foot warmer is probably detected as a short.

+Stephen Webb - it's humorous how little attention sellers put on the pictures they use on eBay and Amazon. Crooked screens, bad soldering, nicks and scratches, etc. You would think they would want to show the best example in the ads. Also, love the ads with bad spelling! Makes you laugh.

The wire might be getting warm because the heat from the elements are transferring through it? Like how a heat sink spreads heat out over it's 'entire' area

rant. Thanking your PAYtreon people is great and all, but don't forget why you actually have them. If you didn't have your subscribers and viewers, you'd be nothing. Just another guy on UA-cam trying and failing. People who don't pay with money are just as important or more so than the people who give you money. Don't forget your roots.
