As someone who only played the singleplayer game (which I loved), this looked so fun. When multiplayer came out I thought that PVP would be extremely degenerate (with things like random starter headshot) but it looks surprisingly balanced. You used stickers that I had no idea existed, and I would love to learn the basics. Do you know where to start?

Hello! Glad you're interesting in picking up PVP. I would suggest joining Zero's unofficial PVP server included in the video description. I'm sure plenty of experienced folks would be happy to help you out.

This is a lot more balanced than I thought it would be! Question though, does the choice of partner matter or does everyone pick their favourites? I’m pretty sure I remember that each partner character got a 10-20% attack boost with their signature mon so would it be more advantageous to bring Kaleigh if you had a decibelle but use Barlkey if you had a spitzfyre?

It normally depends on team composition (my Round 2 match versus Bleck features Viola since the team is heavily geared towards ranged attacks); the signature tape boost is 10%, but you usually get more value out of using each partner's specialty base stat (which is effectively a 20% boost). Barkley is one of the most popular picks due to his 120 base speed allowing you to outspeed key things, which is a big deal when it comes to stuff like Fair Fight Palangolin, but other partner choices will be more appealing depending on team composition (for example, Kayleigh's high base Max HP is more valuable now that Bad Forecast is banned, Meredith might see use for pre-emptive spam teams, etc.)
Spitzfyre having only 730 BST compared to most other monsters at 800+ BST makes it really hard to use on teams, especially since it's not a very fast mon even though it's Barkley's signature tape. As such, it's usually preferred to use a fast tape on Barkley to get extra mileage out of Icicle Dart, or to outspeed some things notably in the enemy player slot.

I saw briefly on the wiki it said that evasion affects crit rate but just from watching this it seems to be quite a drastic effect

Yeah, barring any other status effects, with evasion nullified active any attack with 16%+ accuracy is just guaranteed to crit.
