This is a great interview. Much of what AP said applies to anyone who doesn't have all the major pieces (6bGLs, SK, Malgus, Executor, etc.). I have four GLs but feel the pain of "money-based matchmaking" ($kill-based matchmaking) and the need to hoard "will to live" currency. Don't let the spectrumy depressive schtick fool you; AP understands the game about as well as Calvin plays it. Both are top notch.
Thanks for taking an interest in the mid game. The GP disparity In Aurodium during 3v3 is insanity on steroids. A Good player with one GL has NO shot against a 3+ GL account in 3v3.
i kind of agree, i at 3million + GP, build my account for GAC teams / counters, since the GAC format changed, i find myself wanting to focus on helping my guild in Raids, TB, TW more, GAC has become like whatever i win i win i lose i lose, as long as i am in the bracket that allow me good crystals income. 1suggestion i have would be allow new or mid tier players access to more decent characters like those available in the Journey Guide, will give a sense of achievable goals & interested in building teams around them
Yeah I'm always for faster growth, especially if it's for stuff from 5 years ago I got hooked before GAC existed. Legendaries and assault battles drew me in. Hated arena
Roster building has always been the primary indicator of how good you are at the game. That was just as true under the old GAC system as it is now. Knowing the mechanics of bad teams is like some software engineer creating an overly complicated nobody wants to use. In reality, their competitors have a better product. At least the competitors have a better product in terms of sales, reviews, business growth etc. Maybe that software engineer is a good software engineer, but they're not a good business person or product manager. Yes, the game and matchups are different. But you can still beat 10M accounts in Kyber 1 with a 5M account if you have a results-driven approach. That said, results and "fun" probably aren't synonymous for most players and it's probably hard for most players to find a balance they're happy with. A sandbox mode would do a lot of good for players more interested in collecting characters and playing around with mechanics than being able to compete with competitive players. And I do agree with a 4M cap or something for a lower tier GAC. That'd be great
You're right about roster always being important. It's just shifted in a weird way. As far as winning upsets go, it really depends on the quality of your opponents strategy. I've seen some incredibly upsets but the bigger they get the worse your opponent needs to be to offset.
True. My wins are really just my opponent's losses. Even if I play everything perfectly, my wins are largely due to my opponent messing up. Having a good roster really just provides the opportunity to capitalize on other people's lack of skill
with the matchmaking it's probably good to put a very strong emphasis on assault battles and other PVE modes since you'll be screwed by bigger accounts in GAC
Ships, ships, ships. You can half ass squads on defense and win on ships at a high rate well into k2. So you can basically cut the amount of squads you need by half.
Alright, so not sure if you want people to give critique of the video, but since I'm me I'm just going to do so anyways and list some things that I noticed about the video. First off let me be clear is it s good video and a good interview, just after watching it 3 times I think their might be areas for improvement. Take it how you will your channel and you quite possibly know more that me in this subject. First off that was a surprisingly good intro from a channel this small, not sure about flipping the 2d image but can't think of anything better myself. The beginning of the interview where you do the introductions and talk about not having to edit it out I think only really works given the overall vibe the video ends up having being super chillaxe, just thought about mentioning it since the first part tends to set the tone for the overall watching experience. The first question in a vacuum I would say is kinda weak but since it is just meant to clarify the standing of where AP is in the game it works and as a soft ball for AP to start with to get rolling it also works. The second question I think is pretty good with a good example to show exactly the type of answer you are looking for. AP ends up going on a rant and give an analogy that is good, but is something that he says quite often, and given how the community is quite tight nit I would say a fair amount of the people have heard him say something along those lines before. The end of his answer was good though and you did a good job with the follow up and getting a bit more out of him about the will to live and how it really works. The SLKR rush that ahnald suggests and why AP disagrees with it on the point of new players and not from the perspective of people who are just making a new account. The third question brings up opportunity cost and how GAC matchmaking is kinda busted which are both fine talking points Opportunity cost is a rather important thing especially in a game as long as this, and matchmaking sucking leads into a later question so kind of a bland question but serves its purpose. Getting him to talk about how counters don’t really exist at lower levels and the entire game is really just building a good account I think was good. Good job giving your own experience at a higher kyber level about how GAC is different. Is always interesting to hear about that as a newer player. Getting to hear how opportunity cost still effects those even at a high kyber is good. The last question is a good one, delving more into the thoughts of the person being interviewed, more than what they would usually just divulge on their own, is the purpose of an interview this question does that nicely. The response is good as well and gives a bit of perspective from the developers and whales point of view that the players usually don’t think about. Also hearing about the matchmaking gets better gives me hope. Overall a good interview with good questions, that is kinda held back by the topic it is on being a mobile game. I think that when you were talking about the GAC needing help you could have brought up the idea of changing the rewards for winning and losing depending on what tier you are in.
Something that I think would have been interested to hear would have you playing devils advocate for the bracket system with an argument along the lines of what about the people who didn’t follow a farming guide and just rushed their favorite units and teams. Do they just get left to the wayside now that their accounts are bloated with bad teams? Say they rush nightsisters, phoenix, and grand inquisitor because they like zombies and loved rebels. At that point they can’t beat people of equal GP to them due to decisions they made a long time ago, should they have to play against people of equal gp where they are almost certainly going to lose, or should they be able to punch down where they win from just stats? If they are forced to play people who are equal gp to them, isn’t that similar to lower gp people facing significantly higher account. And if not why? Of course this was kinda answered indirectly with taking about how building the account is the most important thing, but I still think it being put directly into words would have been interesting.
Alright there's a bit to unpack here, so I'm gonna split this into parts 1. Critiques are always welcome, given they're respectful. Which everything you've said is. 2. Good to know things flowed well, I had a very loose structure. 3. Appreciate the comment on the intro; however, it is about to change. I wouldn't mind feedback on that once it's here 5. Matchmaking does get better at the higher level, but I really wouldn't mind a solution for the lower. As a huge amount of the playerbase isn't K1-2 4. Devil's advocate for the GAC matchmaking would be great for a video specifically on that. While we talked about the big negative, there are a ton of positives from the old system. Thanks for putting the time into this comment, it is appreciated.
Funny story...in my first GAC, I don't have a single Relic obv...I played two 5,5MGp Accounts in the same bracket...next GAC nearly exactly the same...that was a lot of fun ._.
nah couldn’t clear even a bit…I think I won one of those cause they didn’t play but like playing a full R5-7 Team without a single Relic ist just impossible…like apgains said counters don’t even matter in the slightest there
Apgains has a point. I used to enjoy play GAC against players with same GP and skill than mine, even used to scout the foe trying to come up with a battle plan and everything. Now I just face players with higher GP who has no skill or willing to compete. So I don't care anymore.
I swear I'm in chormium 1 at around 4.3mil gp, I didn't even get Dr revan, starkiller, gas, or any GLs yet. My opponent was over 8mil gp and had 5 gls plus all the mini GLs like starkiller. Needless to say, i could only beat one gl after a few tries and that was basically it for that gac
The problem is GAC is being forced on us... If you want crystals you must play that crappy mode. If they spread crystal rewards across the other parts of the game pve, pvp, etc. It would solve this.
The thing is with the gp gap that things will return to pre crystal format. You will just focus on keeping your gp as low as possible and doing sh1t like hoarding gear until you can get a gl from nothing and pourpusesfully not applying gear, but now you have to play like this since crystal is tied to Gac. That would be even worse than what we have now, the skill comes from making the best of your resources and that utulizes both account building and the useage of your toons. Sorry in advance for spelling
Calvin: Stay Awesome
Ap: Come be sad with me
Fun combo right?

Yeah it's definitely more money based than it was before. Glad to hear it was helpful
The vision given on early account 1 to 4 M is absolutely right and clear. Thx for video and never forget : have fun this is a game
Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it

I didn't think about how 3v3 makes it even harder. The off meta gets cut in off. Good point

If APGains talked like that in his vids I would listen more

Me and AP actually covered that in the podcast as well. Ships are key to punching up because it's much easier to dominate them.
Yo, nice on Calvin for supporting smaller creators in the community like APGains

Couldn't they match people woth gls against gls only? Kinda sick of been matching with people I don't even stand a chance against:(
I'm not sure if I would go as closed as that. But I wouldn't mind limiters in some sense.
its really fun killing their GL when you dont have one. you KNOW they are pissed off! Use Starkiller or Savage
