  • According to Wikipedia, mankind is 300 000 years old. So it took 299 900 years for man to learn to fly. Yet, these two week old sunbird babies are about to do what us humans could not do in 1000's of years. They are almost ready to fly.
It took them only two weeks to learn from having their poop sacks removed by the parents, to doing it themselves.
The parents then entice them with food-like offerings to come out of the nest.
A bit of sibling rivalry goes on about who goes first.
And then the big move. A first flight to the nearest branch. Half of the flight control surfaces, like the tail feathers, are under developed, but the flight takes place.
Well done to the sunbirds! Maybe there is a reason why humans need 1000's of years to learn whilst nature does it in it's own stride.
It takes a bird two weeks to fly and care for itself. It takes a human baby two years, only to be somewhat independent.
As mentioned in the previous video, sunbirds have more colors than can be seen by the human eye. The UV markings are however visible when the one chick returned to a flower near the nest. It appears to be a male juvenile. It makes me wonder if the other chick was a female?
