"The February 9, 1971 San Fernando California Earthquake was a devastating yet seminal event which, for the first time, demonstrated the seismic threat to lifelines that fundamentally support our modern livelihoods. The knowledge gained from this event initiated the study of lifeline systems worldwide, including water, wastewater, electric power, gas and liquid fuels, communications, transportation, and solid waste management systems."

Living in Oxnard, the earthquake woke me up that morning. Electricity was off but gas water heater was working so had a quick shower and went downstairs for breakfast. Since electric stove was useless, my father lite the gas fireplace and my mom broke out the camping skillet. Scrambled eggs and ham for breakfast. A few minutes later we got a call and school was cancelled for the day. At that point we took off and headed to our friends house.
