- Things in Athen aren't bad. I really have nothing to complain about, expect that I was supposed to be back home in Kyiv right now and mentally I'm already there. But at least I have fast internet thanks to this week's sponsor Holafly: bit.ly/holafly1

I like the esim idea. I wish I knew about this a few months ago when I traveled to Europe. I wasted so much time just to get a sim card. I had to show my password also.
You being from San Francisco I wouldn’t think that it would surprise you to see homeless people sleeping on the streets in Athens even near historical monuments and buildings.
Johnny the Mongolian is anti homelessness he wrongly judges all homeless as being lazy, work shy, drug addicts and or alcoholics without understanding their stories about exactly how they ended up in that predicament.
Spot on, San Francisco is cardboard city! there is homeless everywhere in San Fran
All the big cities are crowded and have nice and terrible areas. When you go to the most central areas of a country's capital is normal to see homeless, find restaurants with low-quality food and be surrounded by tons of people. I think you haven't researched for less crowded areas such as Anafiotika, Lycabettus and Thisseio. I can guess these areas will definitely be more peaceful and less crowded than many areas of San Francisco. Also, the Greek cuisine has a variety of healthy foods compared to the American cuisine which is famous for burgers and pepperoni pizzas.
I think you haven't researched food in the San Francisco area. It's some of the best in the world...and I'm not talking about burgers and pizza.
That’s her point chief.
If you wanted to be in Ukraine you'd just go, never mind talking about it. actions means louder than words.
Agreed ...shit if he loved ukraine so much and cares so much....why didn't he stay and help fight ?
Guess you've never been taught to mind your own business. I really find it so weird how people try to dictate others what to do with their lives
Ucraiine ????? Its russia there is no more ucraine.....
Yea come back here …. Cold showers ??? No water and electricity ⚡️ douche
he don’t gives a fu*k about ukraine, and hes right, me also. let’s wish ukraine will destroyed totally. good luck to russia and ukraine on killing each other. may the war will last forever and both will loose millions of people!
Dude ain’t happy unless he’s complaining about something…
@NAFO Army. Slava Ukraine. is he complaining, or stating a fact that you don't want to hear?
Always 😂😂😂
@NAFO Army. Slava Ukraine. so childish 😂😂
It’s a Slavic tradition that Johnny has embraced, complaining.

Why choose to return to Greece after complaining about it last visit?
He likes the food 🍴
hey Johnny, go to coastal Athens: Paleo Faliro, Alimos, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, people are still swimming the sea is quite warm for the season or go to Pireas
Athens downtown sounds like some places I've passed thru in significant USA towns Johny All countries have them like you see in most countries you visit.
"i try to use less electricity"....while the dining room light is on for no reason in the middle of the day. haha. So great.
AC uses 100x more energy than an LED light being on
@@Aer0xander WAY more than 100x
8n the UK you can go to any large town or city and see homeless people on the streets. I was in Oxford last week one if our great university cities and tge number of homeless on the streets was shameful. OK a lit of this is down to alcohol and drug related issues but not all of it. Seemingly a worldwide problem . And it's good you film the downside of places and the contrasts between right and poor.
I'd argue majority down to drug and alcohol issues or mental health issues... Or mental health secondary to drugs/drinking...
Bro, Oakland California looks by far worse than Athen.
Johnny I could feel the sadness in your voice. Please know that we love you very, very much. Let's hope you will be able to be back home in the near future. ❤💙💛 Thank you so much for all your fantastic videos.
Hi Johnny,
Be positive. U are in a great position of not having to work. Work is an option for me. Enjoy the moment of life. U have my full support, bro.
WTK
Actually when you come here in August Athens is empty so yeah you should come if you don't want a hectic Athens, everyone goes on vacation
Ukrainian here. I've been watching your videos and know that feeling man.
When I had to leave Kyiv for other smaller city I consantly was reminded of my situation, it was pretty shity.
But I ocupied myself with as many things as I could, from going outside daily, spending time with family, discovering new places, shoping, working out, seeing nature ect.
Staying home will drive you crazy bro and will remind why you're here.
Best to keep busy.
I'm in Kyiv now, sure electricity problem sucks but it sure beats being occopied by russians.
Also great job on the cold showers, been hitting for 5 month, it definetly keeps you refreshed and on your edge.
Thanks for the insights, I agree that keeping busy is the only way to move forward and no crazy with the war.
Where r u staying in athens? I have a place in kalamaki u can walk to the beach and 10 min cab ride into Athens. Lmk if you want to stay for a few days iam currently in jersey. I don't know how 2 reach out 2 you.if you are interested.
I go to Athens often for work and I stopped booking around the centre, I get a Hotel in places like Haidari or Peristeri close to the metro, much nicer
i appreciate you showing real life... that's why i am subscribed. the bad with the good...
from experience - much cheaper than in Tel Aviv - but the people are nice ;)
next time you are around - let me buy u a launch ❤️❤️
Everyone is happier at HOME. And unfortunately, homelessness is global. Have you seen the Homeless in Japan? I couldn't believe my eyes! And compared to the US the number of homeless in Greece are way fewer. Graffitti is anger towards the unfairness and I absolutely despise it because there hasn't been a real effort to nip it in the bud. In some municipalities like in Patras, there was an effort to turn it into a form of 'controlled' creativity, but the anger keeps growing. It's great that you point out the positive next to the negative. Enjoy your travels.
You can eat the oranges they're just bitter and not used like normal oranges. People make them into marmelades, pastries and marinades.
I agree with your assessment of Athens. I was born there. I have seen the transformation over the years and not for the better. But Greece is beautiful! You have to go to the beach towns and the islands. 100% different!
Thanks for sharing!
Johnny take a ferry over to one of the Greek islands and I promise there won’t be any other place you’d rather be. There are hundreds to choose from and much more beautiful than the capital with a much slower and more relaxed pace of life than in Athens. Atleast imo the Greek isles are an absolute oasis and right now during low season they are all so peaceful and serene with perfect weather! You are a stones throw away from many of them!
@@Flat_Earth_Addy I’m an expat from the US and I’ve been living on the Greek isles for almost 5 years now and it can be slow when tourist season is gone over the winter but i bought a small place and rent out cars and motor bikes and also work remote for a company which holds me over during off season
@@Flat_Earth_Addy I was lucky enough to get an extended visa after a few years of having to keep reapplying and showing I was self sufficient meaning I make enough money to support myself and I was able to get work during the tourist seasons at restaurant and other places part time with a work permit it’s very reasonable here Lucy especially during the winter the prices go down dramatically and the weather is perfect all year! I opened a business with a friend who is a citizen this past year and with my work permit I am able to buy property and pay taxes like everyone else. I am a copy writer by trade and I can do that from anywhere in the world so that also helped through the years
The issue with his eye and fingers, what happened to him?
Where is that place with all the people and cafes ? What part of Athens ?
That’s just the tourist center near the acropolis.
18:42 As an israeli watching this thinking about relocation. This is 100% true. Striking resemblance to tel aviv. The vibe matching also. If you wouldave turn down the street sings it might as well look like israel to you.
Quick advice... go to a smaller town.... more relax/less people /cheaper and definitely peaceful as well! KEEP IT UP JOHNNY! 💢💯
At 5:00 I suggest to leave from Athens, if you want to enjoy Athens do not stay at the center and go to Acropolis, Thisio, Monastiraki, do not stay at the center. The center is just a huge cement city. If you like to stay for a while, go to museums or see some sites but there is nothing interest at the area you are currently. Go to Piraeus, or even leave the center and go to other more beautiful places. Kifisia, Glifada, Varkiza, Lagonisi all of these are 1 hour far from the center. Also the Metro has many stations and you will go there cheaply and quickly.
What area is your air bnb maybe when you leave post a link
Next to attiki metro.
I don't know you so please explain, you live in Greece permanently?
He live in ukraine and become a ukraine citizen
This guy is traveling the world but says he takes cold showers to feel solidarity ? Lol what ? Cringe af
And what are you doing to help Ukraine?
@@JohnnyFD im definitely not taking cold showers lol
Next time try the south - west part still well connected affordable and not that tough as the city center 😉

What is up with all this negative talk about Athens? Athens is just like every other big city. Mixed. Bad and good, Ugly and beautiful, The most important things is that Athens is amazing and you can really do everything there.
I think spray paint has been one of the worst inventions of all time
I don’t get it?why did you leave California?
You keep saying tourists traps, when they arent. I live in greece, these places you are going to arent trying to rip you off. Athens isnt Rome, or India, generally speaking greeks dont rip people off, its a very unique country.
Johnny you have been so strong for so long and you have used your unique position to help Ukraine. Your personal contribution is huge. Now you are hurt it has forced you to stop and now your feelings will rush. The enormity of the last few months is bound to catch up with you. You deserve time to crawl into a hole to heal. You are a warrior with such a lovely nature! I can say that as I am one of the 20% of females that watch You tube!! You keep me company every day! Although you may feel unsettled please be kind to yourself. Remember how much joy and relief you have brought to many! You deserve some time to lick your wounds and it takes a real man to share his feeings. All that veg will have you feeling strong soon!
Wow thank you so much for that kind comment, I needed to hear something nice for once. =)
@@JohnnyFD You will feel better soon. Just go through in your mind everything you have done for people in the last few months. Awesome! Must be worth a million cold showers for Ukraine! ♥
My first memories from Athens and still strongest are from 90s...i am from Serbia and we were with my high school 7 days in Athens..in that 7 days i manage to lost my self 2 times ..both times i got drunk in discotheque ,went wrong way after that and did not know name off hotel we stayed..so would with friend wonder around a hour trying to find something we remember then we would just lie down on bench and sleep. There was no mobile phone then ,no GPS
What happened?did you get into a fight?
Have you visited Istanbul? If so, how did you like it?
@@Flat_Earth_Addy Smoking that crack are you? hahhahahaaaa that's ridiculous !!! "The cost of living in Istanbul is 82% less expensive than in New York City."
It's Costantinopolis.
@@Unknown-bt5rd In your dreams
Johnny why not move to Madrid or BCN, nice places for $500 cheap food great weather and wait out the situation in Ukraine
You can rent accomodations in those cities for 500usd .. per month? Week?
Why did you go back to Athens if you don’t like it?
Johnny you've done more than your fair share to help support Ukraine - your efforts have been Herculean in fact and we have all seen that so please be proud of that. So sorry to hear you've been feeling down lately, totally understandable given the circumstances but every cloud has a silver lining so maybe turn it to your advantage to travel and explore new places until things calm down in Ukraine
Johnny you do tons for fundraising, and love your videos. It’s good to get an honest view point of a place, good, bad and the ugly. You are a great vloger and you keep it real. Keep going, your doing a great job of bringing the world to people who can’t travel 😊
Thanks for your support!
You think Greece is bad try living in NYC or San Fran.
That’s why I left San Francisco 😂
Every person gives johnny a sick look when he films 😂
How did he hurt his eye/hand?
Defending a woman from her abusive boyfriend.
He mentioned it about 2 videos ago. He stood up to an abuser who hit a girl.
He stayed in sepolia, literally one of the nasty neighborhoods. The centre of Athens is very much like that apart from some exceptions. The better neighborhoods are closer to Piraeus and out towards the northern suburbs
Sepolia was a lot nicer than the downtown neighborhoods I stayed last time in Athens. It seems like the "nice areas" are all outside of the city center.
@@JohnnyFD No, for example Plaka is super nice. 🤷🏻♀️
I know exactly how you feel our life has been in a storage shed for a year since the housing crisis took hold I miss my bed couch all my belongings nowhere is home we got a private temporary unit but I have to go to the main house past 5 massive dogs to shower and there's no internet except our phone it's on outskirts of town which is gripped by no where to live in Australia the not so lucky country 🇦🇺 all my son and I with our 2 cats wanted was a rental to call home but it's denied many people in Australia like you we feel the loss of home 😔🧡
Looks like nice warm weather for November in Greece!
Yeah but it's not the case every year. And Athens is one of the warmest areas of Greece. North is colder and islands are very windy and feels chilly. Normally it's very rainy in autumn all around the country but not this year.
@@Gk-ug6gu when do the cicadas stop singing
@@s125ish I would say at the end of September - first days of October, but it depends. In southern areas like south Peloponnese, Crete and some other islands, I think they are still singing till late October. But not all the time and only the hottest hours of the day. Usually temperature is around 25°C in the islands. Above that is not normal for October.
@@Gk-ug6gu warmest areas in Greece? We not counting the Greek Islands or something?
It is not normal, climate change. November should be 10-15C max
I’m staying in a nicer area, the dude is literally staying in the most dangerous and run down place in Athens, I mean I live in athens for all my life and never even been close to where he lives. Staying in the worst spot of a city and then running assumptions about it, just epic😅
I’m literally in the city center.
@@JohnnyFD well my friend the city center is quite big actually, comprised of us many as 8 different districts, try to Google the south / north suburbs to check where the ppl actually live :)
Just to give u benchmark, where u staying is literally like me going to Kiev, staying in troyeshina and then drawing assumptions on the city :))
I'm so sad to hear that you've been feeling so depressed 😢 take care of yourself! Praying 🙏 All the best! I know you've been to some really beautiful places, but there's nothing like home. So I can understand you missing home!
@BargainShack😂😂😂 stop it!
Would you be willing to sponsor my new line of spit guards for iPhones 📱
How did he get the black eye and eff up hand?
Why stay in Athens why not go to other islands? Maybe cheaper
19:40 Johhny you need to move those fingers even if it hurts or else they will remain stiff. See a physio if you can
Sound a bit disheartened Johnny, you just need some company. You’re also getting a lot of wear out of that North Ridge T-shirt 😂
Johnny, if you like Athens, go to Nicosia in Cyprus, you will really like it - it's just a lil more expensive than Greece
I hope you're not serious.
moving to athens in about 2 months 🙏
What happened to Johnny?
Hi Johnny, i had a similar injury from defending myself, with three knuckels completely striped to the bone that got infected, i could not open or close my hand for nearly two months. I can recommend a "silicone finger trainer" for your thumb. It's like 5 finger rings connected with rubberband. They cost 10-20 € on Amazon, for a set with 3-5 different resistance. Your thumb will be stronger than before your injury. Godspeed
Graffiti looks very trashy!
As Paddy J recommend below, visit Malta! It's a very picturesque bundle of cities on some islands.
This is really rich... hahahahaha at .25 you are touching the marbles and you are saying that they are 100s of years old.... These are modern building that were build less than 100 years ago. They look old because they were built using the concept of the old structures... THERE IS NO WAY Greeks would retrofit 1,000s of years old buildings and turn them to office buildings... Also, the top of the columns are painted gold... There is no building in Athens or anywhere in the world that paint survived after so many years...
You are fake. You should really go to Ukraine
They were build almost 200 years ago. The buildings are called "Athenian trilogy".
You're still in the 'rougher' than usual part of Athens though! Definitely not as bad as Metaxourgeio, but truly not where you'll see the typical neighbourhood either.
If you want to see different vibes, try staying in Gyzi (near Ambelokipi), Ambelokipi, Panormou, Ilisia, Zografou (Ilisia and Zografou is near Megaro Moussikis station).
Please upgrade your video ... often it is agony & I love your content.
The "M" probably means Metro 1 or 2.
Would M1 or M2 be better then?
I feel you on the slow upload speeds...I used to only get 0.5Mbps upload until I got Starlink.
Johnny, I have an idea !... Try Ukraine next time !!!
Jonny
I think the title should be life in Athens... Not life in Greece 🇬🇷
Greece has thousands of cities and Islands you can visit and enjoy!!!
Its like telling me that san Francisco is only down town San Francisco where all the bad neighborhoods are and all the homeless hang out... so this video isn't really fare for Greece.... :(
You are more than welcome to vist Paros, Ios, Naxos,Crete,Thessaloniki ect.....
I think that after 10 years you are getting a little home sick.... It just might be time to go home for Thanksgiving!!!
Heyy Johnny...just go back and see your mum and dad and have nice times. It will be nice for you and for them. And you will save mire money. Theres nothing like coming home and recharging your spiritual happiness with your parents if you haven't seen them.
What if they aren't there no more?

I'm sure there are ways to go to Ukraine. Why don't you try it?
Athens seems low tech compared to ISTANBUL
As a Greek working mostly in center Athens i actually found the video none biased. Just plain truth.
U are happiest when you are around people you know. Don't be down, things will look up soon 😃
Hi Johnny, how comes you haven't been back to Chiang-Mai Thailand? That was your home for a long time before?
I've thought about going back. But it's such a far flight, so if I go, it'll have to be for 3+ months to make it worth the trip.
The situation in Ukraine is so sad but Man, you want get of your arse and make a living this is not the time to feel stuffed work around the region sad as it is, the situation will improve.
El cheap flights Ryan air etc. Make the most of it as long as your moving your highlighting Ukraine.
Johnny, next time that you come to Athens, as for a local to show you around! Athens has a huge inequity gap so there are far better places to visit. Also keep in mind that our country is an expensive one, so if see something cheap, there must be a reason for that.

You are great Johnny
Just so you know -- those marble columns you were touching at the start, saying they were thousands of years old . . . . They're not. That's the University which was built in 1837. . You really should research the place properly.
go check out Wroclaw, Poland it's awesome!

How old is Athens?
Ancient
7000 years old. Third oldest city in the world.
I'd love to get esim, but it's way more expensive than all the other options I had when travelling. Like I can get almost a month of unlimited data in Japan for the price of 5 days I saw in the vid.
If i'm going to stay in a country for 30 days or longer, I'll get a local SIM card when I land. But i've been using eSIMs for when I'm moving through countries for a few days at a time, as a lot of them cover an entire region or even world wide. It's nice to have internet straight when we land or arrive by bus or train.
@@JohnnyFD Oh, definitely, it's just, at least for the countries I go to, it's even cheaper for less days. But tbf, I also book/rent/buy the carda before I land for pick up on landing.
