    I agree with Colin. As a Trump supporter i would respect a protest with a clear message. All these riots and crying and violence wont mean anything. It makes it worse and created more Trump supporters

    • @establishedclutch
      @establishedclutch 8 років тому +7

      Protests with a clear message would be ideal. But having attended the womens march, which admittedly had a less clear focus, it was far from a riot and was overwhelmingly peaceful. That's important context, I believe.

      erick villagrana I agree. I am not a trump supporter but when I see these "protesters" destroying property I think "well I'm not one of those people" and makes me want to defend trump supporters and even vote for the guy next time. this reaction has just secured trump another term.

      honestly...it's hard to keep calm when trump supporters keep calling me names and being openly racist to me. I didn't feel wanted in this country before, Trump gets elected and all of the sudden the worst that America has to offer comes afloat.
      Everyday I see trump supporters ignoring all the aweful shit trump is doing or has done, not to mention that I have to do an almost insane effort at making sure that not all of you are bad people. But even if you aren't racists and hateful, you still decided to look the other side and put a man in office that is empowering all of these bigots.

    I just find it funny how some Americans are saying it's stupid to protest, yet their country is independent due, essetially, to a massive protest

    • @danehowells
      @danehowells 8 років тому +5

      I do, however, agree with Colin when he's says if their protesting 10 different thing it's ineffective

    • @HisDivineOrder
      @HisDivineOrder 8 років тому

      I agree that protests without a focal point are ineffective, but I happen to believe it takes years of unfocused protests to boil down issues until one takes precedence. The problem is that Trump's chaotic manner creates rampant issues to be protested. So many, in fact, that when everyone is out protesting simultaneously about their issue, it "feels" unfocused. What you want is a president that only starts one fire a time and instead we have a president that is a political mass arsonist (to steal from a recent CNN article I read).
      If everyone protesting chose just one topic to protest, they'd 1) not be voting with their heart/conscience as Colin likes to say and 2) they'd probably be missing the ten other things Trump's done that week that deserve to also be called out.
      This is the fundamental problem with information overload. It's easy to look back to the 60's and say that protesters knew what they were doing back then. Sure, maybe, but in reality they had less information to go on and they also had presidents who actually gave a fig about how what they did looked to their constituents. Trump doesn't care. He does what he does and he just so happens to enrage people on a daily basis with daily statements or decisions that all are equally worthy of attention.
      And because we have all this insta-information, it's really easy for masses of people to be upset.
      What Colin (and you) essentially want is for everyone to agree that certain issues NOT get protested because issues YOU decide are worthy are more worthy than what others want. That's not going to work.
      What's going to work is quite simply a society change where society values truth versus the convenient, comfortable lie. Don't count on that coming any time soon.

    • @WhileTruePlay
      @WhileTruePlay 8 років тому

      Agreed. Also, you need to have actively attempt to reach people and change minds. One of my biggest criticisms of a women's march (peaceful as it may have been) was that they turned away swathes of pro-life marchers because they thought that it would undermine their message. The original intention, however, was to march against Trump's appointment, not for planned parenthood.
      Speaking with a history of professional protesting in my family (teamsters) and participating in some myself, not everyone agrees on everything at a picket line. The idea is that you agree on ONE thing. That one thing unites you. Instead, they essentially gave up voices and made enemies out of people who could have been allies. That's the opposite of the goal.
      Honestly, this particular screw up happens a lot with people who have no experience exercising their right to protest or a disorganized message.

    • @WhileTruePlay
      @WhileTruePlay 8 років тому

      I agree with you to a degree. That is one way for an issue to become a clear focus by essentially boiling to the top through continued outrage, but to your other point: that's the benefit of having organizers.
      You need a clear focus in order for a protest to be effective and not simply cathartic (or even potentially off-putting to people who could've be allies.) A figurehead or greater organization in general, help to get that one-topics-focus quicker. They make that decision on what fire to put out first or they snuff it at the source (loved that analogy by the way: mass political arsonist).

    • @Coral732
      @Coral732 8 років тому

      You have the right to protest, but people also have the right to call your protest stupid. That's what freedom of speech is. I think majority of the protests on the left are stupid, because they go beyond just freedom of speech.

    I've been watching your videos since the Steve Jobs Conversation with Colin four years ago when this channel was still gameovergreggy--I'm 19, and I've basically grown up with this channel. The ways which this has screwed me up are yet to be seen (mostly kidding about that), but watching your videos and watching this channel grow has made me a more involved and compassionate person. Colin's passion has inspired me to learn and to study History and Government and to be unafraid to hold our government to a certain standard and form my own opinions when parties and voices and issues are telling me to believe one way or one way only. Thank you guys for making these videos, for your passion, and for continually discussing these things from your multiple perspectives--I think it makes a difference with people here.

      You want to know one major thing that will fix the country? Stop with the gotcha politics! The woman made a mistake and she owned up to it. This belief that we all should be perfect and if there is a slip up when the cameras are on us 24 hours a day is unreasonable.

    • @sergiofreitas441

    • @Aeradom2000
      @Aeradom2000 8 років тому +1

      Sérgio Freitas And? She still acknowledged the mistake elsewhere. To be honest, when I heard about two terrorist being arrested in Bowling Green, my natural assumption was that there was a terrorist attack. And I live no less than 30 minutes from there!
      Now if she was continue to argue the point, then she's certainly deserving of ridicule. But when we live in a society where people can't be wrong without showing some form of weakness, that only encourages people to bunker up in their mentalities and with their team. If people are so defensive, they aren't going to listen to whatever you say because if they were to acknowledge you might have a point, then they are inviting further attacks.

    • @lukecrawford2159
      @lukecrawford2159 8 років тому

      +Sérgio Freitas well while you focus on petty shit people are "protesting" and hurting people but all liberals do is cry wolf. "Trump is racist", "the immigration ban", "not my president". It's tiring why people care so much about petty shit like that. If you want to make a difference than go out to the streets and voice your option not talk behind a fucking computer screen.

    Before Trump was elected, and even after, I was one of the far left people Colin is describing. My opinion was "if you're voting for Trump, you're against me and all people like me." And though there are still times where I feel very disenfranchised by Trump's administration (I'm queer as fuck yo) I have begun to understand that those types of exclusionary tactics don't really help anyone. The average person that voted for Trump was voting for what they thought was best, and I can respect that. They have different core values than me, and I can also respect that. My own parents, who are loving and do not care that I am gay AND trans, voted for Donald Trump, and I know that they were not doing so maliciously.
    The idea of "with us or against us" only makes the moderate person feel pushed away. In order to accomplish anything, you must have patience and compassion for other people. My mom isn't gay, and therefore, it's not the foremost thought in her mind when choosing a candidate. I can respect that. She is a small business owner who believed that Trump would make her life easier when it comes to taxes and such. I can also respect that. She isn't some monster because she voted for him. And like Nick said, Trump is a product of all that came before him. He wouldn't have won this race if it weren't for the polarized state of our politics (imo).
    Take some time to be compassionate and try to understand where the other side(s) are coming from. I think that's the only way forward.

      Trump is the most pro LGBT+ President ever elected including all Democrat ones.
      One of the reasons he wants to prevent Islamist is because how intolerant they're of the LGBT+ community. If Islamists have their way you'll be thrown of a building.
      How Progressivism brainwashed you into thinking Islamist and LGBT+ are friends is beyond comprehension.

    • @averyjbyrd
      @averyjbyrd 8 років тому

      Not all Muslim people are anti-LGBT. That's like saying all Christians are anti-LGBT; there are some that are, and some that are not. I can't comment on whether Trump himself is LGBT friendly, but having Pence as his vice president definitely rubbed me the wrong way.
      Either which way, though, I think Trump has some things to offer our country, just like any other president.

    • @averyjbyrd
      @averyjbyrd 8 років тому

      MR Purple I'm not aligning myself with the left. I think that the extreme left is just as irresponsible and hate mongering as the far right. The "muslim ban" definitely targeted country's with high Muslim populations--whether it was actually directed as Muslims, I guess we don't know.

    Colins parts were as always some of the most insightful to me. I also appreciate the discussion Nick had towards the end about taking extra moments to think about what you want to say before you say it in response to anyone you might disagree with. I am an independent myself but this is something I have always tried to do. Unfortunately sometimes people still chew me out but occasionally I get the rational adults willing to listen to what I have to say since I presented it in a kind informative way not in a condescending belittling way. Honestly if people did that constructive way of communication more we would be in a better place. I have corrected people sharing false or misleading information on facebook and because of my approach they kindly took it down and contacted me directly thanking me for doing so.

That being said, my local area clearly supported Trump, and even members in my own family did. I know they are good people. I just want people to talk, like actually talk to each other in person. Hi Colin, I appreciate the passion and concern that you have on the lack of civility and cooperation among fellow Americans in the aftermath of this election. You feel that there is a reasonable third way in politics and I can get behind it in theory. My question to you is what is the center of politics? What positions reach out to the middle of the political spectrum? When polls reveal a certain % of people to be moderate/independent, it's not clear on what it means for one to be moderate. For a certain section of polls, a "moderate" is defined as someone who can have extremely liberal position like full legalization of all drugs and extremely conservative position like most taxes are eliminated altogether all because one is not ideologically consistent or heavily partisan on either side. I am genuinely curious to see you define what policies and politicians are in the middle center of American politics in a future episode as the viability of such positions and figures. Also, would you emphasizing the center as rational to be perpetuating things like Very Serious People and both sides are extreme and the truth is in the middle fallacy? I'm not saying whether it is true or not in your case. Just wondering whether that is something to consider when espousing positions or perspectives that are assumed to be "rational" and "reasonable" which under greater scrutiny could bear far greater ideological principles and assumptions than one would otherwise thought. Great segment overall. Glad that both you and the rest of the Kinda Funny crew are discussing politics in the manner that you do. You all have strong positions but seem to respect one another and seek for better discussions and a better world for all. Appreciate and value that sentiment. I wish you all the best in the future. P.S. Colin for as much as I disagree with you fundamentally on numerous issues. I feel assured that you come from a place of sincerity and thoughtfulness which comes across in your video series and your writing. If nothing else, it gives me an opportunity to think and reflect upon my core beliefs and worldview. I wouldn't have any other way. Thanks Colin and take care.

    Colin is right, we are almost as divided as we were in the 1850's, and to go with Greg's point there will probably have to be another tragic event to close the divide. If you think about the events that followed the 1850's and how tragic they were, then you'd see there's a good chance that is what this country is headed for again. But this time I don't know if there will be a Lincoln to guide us and that is a very scary thought.

    Colin, idk if this counts as extreme, but to answer your question at 6:00, it was radical abolitionists and radical actions by former president Lincoln that got the attention of the south and caused them to secede (also a radical movement). It was also radical of the women to stand for days in winter and rain in front of the white house to get the 19th amendment to pass. It is known as immediatism, and it works, sometimes.

    Serious question and something I'm curious about: how much of a role does dual party system play in this "us v them" thing? I come from a country with arguably too many parties in the parliament at the moment, but only having two relevant ones seems awfully reductive to me. Especially because the most important issues have more than just two sides.

Not everyone is happy but they tend to work together really well (there is some arguing though). Is there any chance of america ever really having a third or forth part that can have a real chance at the presidency or in any of the other branches of government?

  • @mgrey24
    @mgrey24 8 років тому +3

    Colin bringing up false equivalencies again. "Why didn't you care about the constitutions then?". Just because you protest something does not mean you have to protest everything. You can have 1 issue that you care about, that doesn't mean that you have to care about every issue.

    • @ThatDereKid
      @ThatDereKid 8 років тому +1

      Actually you are making a false equivalence. Colin's rhetoric does not equal "you should have protested all these issues". What he's saying is that if the reason you are protesting something now is that it's "unconstitutional", then you should've have protested other unconstitutional acts. If only care to protest the immigration ban and not the other issues, than you're almost certainly not protesting the immigration ban because it's unconstitutional.

    The best way of fighting against something, is giving an alternative option. Give answers that can please both sides, understand that for each person that thinks like you, someone disagree.
    Shouting "no to the ban" is great, but what instead?, you need a plan B, where those who feel unsafe and support it, may consider a soft version.
    Only understanding the person at the other side of the table will get you somewhere.

    Colin is right. If the majority of 300,000,000 citizens feel they need to sign up for all in Option A, or all in Option B, we are screwed. We might as well just be separate countries and be done with it. Just write off the Civil War like, "Guess you were right, the north and south won't ever be unified." We can just set up "California, The Republican States of America and New England" and call it a day.

    14:25 when Colin prepares his charging statements and speaks exactly how Independents feel. Did I vote for Trump, Yes, does that in some way say I'm equal to him and his thoughts/actions, No. I voted for Trump because this Country needed a shake up in Washington. This Country needed something different and since we are a Country of chances and Freedoms why not take a chance to make an actual change? Colin is 1000% correct on if we stand together we are stronger if we the people feel we're ALL not being represented, but notice how the very Left Liberal member just sat there in denial...

  • @heyjiikae

    Colin said "if you voted for Bill Clinton you were apparently pro-gay marriage" to discredit "far left" logic but most candidates weren't pro-gay marriage in the 90s. If they were, they were 3rd party, and we know the realities of voting 3rd party. I think Colin is highly underestimating how much the average person has been paying attention to what's going on.

    Liberal and conservative actually are mutually exclusive. Conservatism is one thing, _( the tendency towards what is traditional or established)_, and liberalism is anything that isn't that one thing.

    • @Darkjediiii
      @Darkjediiii 8 років тому

      Z4RQUON People can have elements of both in their own personal politics. I consider myself to be liberal on a number of social issues but I'm fairly fiscally conservative.

    • @Z4RQUON
      @Z4RQUON 8 років тому +1

      *****: Fiscal policy is not politics. The phrase "fiscal conservative" gets used to change the subject. Liberal and conservatives are alternatives, it is contradictory to be both on the same subject.

    • @Darkjediiii
      @Darkjediiii 8 років тому

      Z4RQUON One of the definitions of politics from Merriam Webster states that politics is "the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy." Government policy covers a wide range of subjects, to include social and fiscal issues. So yes, by extension of the definition, being fiscally conservative is included when discussing political leanings.

    • @Z4RQUON
      @Z4RQUON 8 років тому

      *****: I get that. What I'm saying is that "fiscal conservatism" is not an alternative to general political liberalism. When people say that, as you did, they're just trying to change the subject.

    This is awesome that you guys are talking about this. Only in face of extremists do I usually vote defensively (voting for the person's strongest opposition), but generally, I always vote for the politicians that could best represent the whole constituency. They can be republican. They can be democrat. In Massachusetts, when no other democrat could successfully run against the incumbent and pretty imperfect Deval Patrick, I voted Baker. He didn't win then. But, 4 years later after against the MA democratic party's preference, Coakley beat Grossman in the primary, I voted Baker again And I've been very happy with his governance. Right now, the only thing that could persuade me to not vote for Baker next time around is if Newton's Mayor Setti Warren doesn't make it past the primary.

    You are absolutely right grajmahal. What a lot of people fail to realise is that it's sometimes old school, balanced, liberals who vote against these new school, unbalanced, liberals. The problem is that the unbalance has been promoted for so long by media and politicians in many countries that the balanced people are now made out to be cold, aloof and out of balance even though they are often old school liberals!
