I'm floored to see Janet Jackson in that video. I can't believe that with all the success she had on the British charts that she never had a leader on the singles chart.
That’s the one that surprised me most, considering how other Scandinavian acts (like ABBA and A-Ha) were much more popular in the UK than in America. Interesting to see several UK acts who topped the US charts, including Kim Wilde and Bananarama, on this list.
Gloria Estefan (Miami Sound Machine). Biggest hit with MSM was Dr. Beat #4 (or Dr. Pressure #3), solo her biggest hit was Don't Wanna Lose You #6 and she had loads of UK hits. Salt-N-Pepa = Push it / Let's Talk About Sex = #2.
Yeah, I'm surprised about Bananarama which managed to only get "Venus" to #8 UK, while it was #1 in US and many other countries. There were a few SAW-related head-scratchers between the two charts (could be an idea for one of these comparison vids). While the UK seemed to be dominated by their artists in the mid/late 80's, some of their biggest American hits charted lower in UK (like "Together Forever" by Rick Astley (US #1, UK #2), Boy Krazy "That's What Love Can Do" (US #18, UK #80), and Dead or Alive "Brand New Lover" (US #15, UK #31).
@@EuroPopFan4Life BoyKrazy were an American group, though produced by the very British SAW team. It was actually a remixed version of “That’s What Love Can Do” which charted in the US two years after the original version was released.
I'm shocked that R.E.M. had 11 Top 10 hits in the UK (also surprisingly, more than Genesis). They only had 4 Top 10's in the U.S. with the last two in 1991 (Losing My Religion/Shiny Happy People). I guess they did better on the Alternative specialty charts rather than the Hot 100. Odd that an alternative band from America was so popular in the U.K.
And if that's not shocking enough: their biggest hit 'Losing My Religion' peaked at No'19 only. I have no idea why it failed to become a Top-10 hit in the UK.
I’d like to see a similar video for the US. One of my favorite weird Billboard chart records: Credence Clearwater Revival had *five* #2 hits without ever reaching the top. (They did at least have a #1 album with “Cosmo’s Factory.”)
The Who was never No. 1 in the UK. However, a Pete Townshend composition did reach No. 1 = Thunderclap Newman "Something In The Air". Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath: never No. 1 in the UK but were No. 1 in Germany. Deep Purple never No. 1 in the UK, but "Child In Time" was voted No. 1 in several early editions of the Dutch Top 100 of all times.
@@splintercast8092 : that is correct, and I also estimate that Led Zeppelin is not included in the video because pretty much every album they released went to No. 1 in either UK or US... an album topping the chart is also a No. 1 hit, I guess...
The Who is one of the most special cases, globally they must have more than 30 number 2 positions (between albums and singles). I think the only time they were number 1 on any list was with Who's Next in 1971.
bon jovi, bruce springsteen, depeche mode, roextte, dolly parton not having a number one hit is just crazy!!! also kim wilde deserved to have at least one!
An interesting compilation. Tina Turner & Janet Jackson are definitely the most shocking. I knew about Janet, but thought Tina must have had one. Obviously not. A lot of the others had pretty short careers, so not so surprising.
In terms of UK synth pop, Pet Shop Boys are the clear leader (several No.1s), followed by Erasure (1 No.1, but quite a number of Top 5). Depeche Mode is not that popular chart wise compared to the 2.
Girls wanna have fun, time after time, true colours, I drove all night and a 1994 remix of her first hit were all big top 10 hits here. All her other releases were minor hits. Still quite a successful career as her hits were spread out between 1984 and 1994
I find it unbelievable that Bruce Springsteen has never had a UK No.1 and that song of his got stopped by the abysmal novelty that was Doop. Tells you a lot about the intelligence of the UK doesn't it? I would also give an honourable mention to The Who who never had one either, it annoys me that My Generation was stopped by The Carnival Is Over by the Seekers. And I would especially mention Pulp and Supergrass who never had any No.1's either - Common People stopped by Robson & Jerome's "Unchained Melody" (damn you Mr Cowell!) and Alright was stopped by Outhere Brothers and even worse Richard III was held off by the disgraced R Kelly even.
What I don't understand is how Bruce Springsteen has 12 number 1 albums in the UK considering that his first number 1 was Born In The USA, Did he seriously make 11 other interesting albums after that?
@@OnlyGoodMusic_ “The River” was his first US number-one album. I’m a bit surprised “Born to Run,” the album that made him a superstar, only made it to #3. Actually, that would be a good video idea: iconic albums that never hit #1.
@@zombiedodge1426 If that surprises you, I suppose you must have little idea of how the music market worked at that time. It is totally normal that it was not number 1, and by the way, it makes no sense to say "it only reached #3", as if that were not enough. Normally the peaks are not even relevant, longevity is much more important as it really reflects popularity, focusing only on the peak is being superficial.
Kylie Minogue, 7 UK #1s, 2 songs that sold 1 million copies (Madonna hasn't had a million seller), 35 top 10 hits. Yet, she managed only 2 top 10s in the US, while Janet lived at #1. Kylie had more hits across the rest of the world than Janet did. Janet might be the queen in the US (well, actually Madonna is) but she's not that successful elsewhere. Consider that her Rhythm Nation album gave her 5 or 6 US #1s, in the UK, the highest peaking song from that album, Black Cat, peaked at #15 and I say all this as a Janet fan. She's definitely not the queen of pop, maybe the black queen, or is that Whitney?
Honestly I'm surprised Genesis never had a #1 in their own country, even when they became more commercial/pop.
Thanks for denoting (as a solo artist) with Annie Lennox. 👍As one half of Eurythmics, she hit #1 with There Must Be An Angel (playing with my heart).
I'm floored to see Janet Jackson in that video. I can't believe that with all the success she had on the British charts that she never had a leader on the singles chart.
Truly shocking and unfair.
Wow, Roxette had 4 #1s plus 2 #2s in the USA but never got higher than #3 in the UK? Surprising!
I was surprised too !!
Also, "Almost Unreal" flopped in the US (#94) but was a big hit in the UK (#7).
That’s the one that surprised me most, considering how other Scandinavian acts (like ABBA and A-Ha) were much more popular in the UK than in America.
Interesting to see several UK acts who topped the US charts, including Kim Wilde and Bananarama, on this list.
That’s crazy. Especially Guns N’ Roses and Janet Jackson.😮
It looks like G n’ R had way more *top ten* hits in Britain than at home, though.
Bananarama and Kim Wilde truly deserved a #1 hit in the UK. Both are legends of pop with 40 years of career
100% agree!
Bananarama did however reach #1 twice as part of Band Aid and Band Aid II
One to add:
CARPENTERS - 7 top 10 hits - peak #2 - Yesterday Once More & Please Mr Postman
Thanks!
Tina Turner never had number one or number two hit in UK? That is pretty shocking!
In the US, she had one #1 and two #2s.
Es increíble que grupos o cantantes no tienen un solo número 1 en u.k. como Roxette, non jovi. Janet Jackson, Paula abdul

Janet's biggest hit in the UK is actually "Togther Again", by far her best selling single

Kim Wilde did hit number 1 in the states unlike her singer, father Marty who didnt

Its official, the UK has missed the mark. Some iconoc artists in this reel. Im not American so dont think its because I am bias.

The Brits never warmed up to Cyndi Lauper for some reason.
Cyndi did go to No.1 as part of the USA for Africa though.

That Dolly Parton had *any* top ten hits in Britain is more (pleasantly) surprising than her failure to hit #1 in the UK.
