Faramir was one of my favorite characters in the books. He was - in a very real sense - the Aragorn of the Stewards. The true Steward who was to restore the line. I was disappointed by how he was portrayed in the films, but I understand. It would have taken a lot more exposition and back story to make him more like the character in the books.
I think all you would have to do is just include a few of his speeches. The moment that he catches a swooning and weary Frodo when he says he has to get into Mordor is a great moment. And how he helps them afterwards, knowing the peril of their quest now.
Thr movies were so flawed. I see it now after reading the books. The movies were a caricature. There were so many parts that were not even expanded upon in the movie and the viewers were expected to just follow it along.
“War will make corpses of us all” One of the few truly underrated characters in the story; bad enough he lost his brother but to deal with a parent that doesn’t show any love for you? Ouch He kinda always reminded me of The Titan Atlas from Greek mythology; he seemed to almost literally carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. At least he got the proper ending we all wanted for the hero behind the scenes :)

I didn’t have any problems with movie faramir though I prefer the book version. I understand why pj made the changes he did. To stay 100% true to the books it would have required additional exposition that would make the movies even longer and more grueling for the casual viewer.

Faramir is one of my favorite characters of the story. He is one of a small group of characters that will be tested by the presence of the Ring. Only one of these characters fails the test of the Ring and this is his brother Boromir. Boromir is my favorite charcter of the story. He tries to take the Ring and only after it is beyond his grasp does he realize his folly and rather then chase after the Ring gives his life in defense of Merry and Pippin. This is what Faramir must confront when the Ring is now within his grasp. The loss of his Brother and the chance to serve his Father. I think this is one of the hardest tests out of all of them that we see in the story. I think it is one that we may most identify with. The desire to have the Wisdom to see what we must do despite our personal feelings and commitments. It is not the last test but it was a great feeling to see the Wisdom of Faramir when reading the story that first time. How we fretted that Faramir cannot die because he was a noble soul. Somebody save Faramir because we did not want to relive the Death of Boromir.

honestly one of the best characters in the series... 100% my favourite. sure he was done wrong in the film, but i understand why they did it... there should be a second version of the film where everything is the same, but Faramir is as he is in the book. PS any dislikes are obviously from Denethor

Faramir also reminds me of myself because I would fight if need be but I’d just want to enjoy my days with family and friends and if I did have to fight I’d only be to protect myself or my loved ones! Also I’m very excited to see how the silmarillion, one ring, and arkenstone are similar I think we can already figure out one common denominator. They all make people crazy!

I like both versions of Faramir, the book and the movie. I do agree he was changed too much for the film, but I can see where they were coming from and he definitely makes up for it in the extended edition of Return of the King. :)

What Faramir stood for, as you said, are the things that the Kings of Numenor stood for at the very beginning. And had he not been as prideful, Denethor would have stood for as well. As Legolas said--"If Gondor still has such men in its waning, great must have been its Glory in its beginning."
I can definitely see him and Faramir showing the depths of their brotherly affection. Look no further than the deleted scene from the Two Towers along with how Boromir acted when he got tackled by the Hobbits.
@@BigBWolf90 how would the last defense of Minas Tirith change with Boromir leading the charge with his brother and Gandalf the White at the gate. Deneathor wouldn't go mad with sadness and could mount a stronger defense against the Orcs.

@@BigBWolf90 Yes. Boromir could rise the Rohirrim faster too. The stand at Minas Tirith would be stronger with more warning from Aragorn and Rohan. Would the last bridge over the Anduin still fall?
Faramir wasn't sent on some "insane suicide mission" to try and retake Osgiliath. He was sent out to defend Rammas Echor, the wall that surrounds the Pelennor Fields and Minis Tirith. The wall isn't shown in the movies. He wasn't sent out by Denethor because of some crazy man's vindictiveness either (like it's semi alluded to be in the movie). It was a genuine military campaign to damage Sauron's forces and delay them at the wall while as many defenses as possible could be devised and put in place, as well as buying time for allies to hopefully arrive. Faramir spoke against the idea because he, Gandalf, and Denethor all knew they didn't have the manpower to effectively defend the wall, but Faramir went forward and did his duty. Gandalf just asked him basically not to throw away his life trying to "impress dad". Fast forward a bit to the bursting of the gates of Minis Tirith by Grond. At the moment the Witch King rides through the shattered gate and faces Gandalf the horns of Rohann blow and the Witch King is forced to lead his forces out to battle the Rohirrim. That's how close it came to battle being at the gate or even within the city. That delaying action at Rammas Echor may have saved a lot of potential grief and few people seem to catch that. Denethor may have been a asshole sending Faramir out there, but it wound up being the correct thing to do strategically in the battle.

The books: "But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo." The movies: "ThE RiNg WiLl gO To gOnDoR!" ...So it begins. Faramir in the books was literally the personification of the Perfect Knight. He never had a single moment's doubt as to what his duty was regarding Frodo and the Ring. He willfully went against what he knew his father the steward's wishes would be, right from the start. Boromir was second to none with swordplay, but Faramir was only just barely behind him. Furthermore he had also been tutored by Gandalf, so he knew medicine and lore and language and was an extremely complete package. He even looked forward to and supported the return of a rightful king to Gondor. He fully embodied the knights of old, and it mildly enraged me that the films took the liberty of giving him hubris similar to Boromir. The entire point of his character is to emphasize the contrast between the imperfect father's love for the imperfect son, while the perfect son stood disdained in the shadows yet made perfect choices...choices worthy of a prince, which he ended up becoming...at every single turn. Faramir is proof of the potential "strength of Man" other than Aragorn. It could be argued that Faramir's existence proves both Gandalf and Boromir right. Gandalf knew and therefore was specifically referring to Aragorn when he made his claim, and Boromir was on his deathbed after failing himself, when he made his. Since Tolkien was all about parallels and connections, this all makes me wonder if Boromir was specifically referring to his brother Faramir. Everybody picks examples based on their own personal experiences, right? If true, then here is yet another layer of depth to his character that Jackson blasted into oblivion in his attempt to make him more "relatably human." Which in turn says something in and of itself. If Faramir's original perfect character was considered unrelatable, then this logically means one of two things. Either Jackson himself couldn't personally relate to a human of that virtue, or he didn't think that anybody else in his target audience could. ...I feel like we should all be equally insulted by both possibilities.
Very true. There were a number of changes that Jackson made to the story I dislike but the character assassination of Faramir was by some way the worst!
The treatment of Faramir always saddens me because he was the most noble of the 'regular men' who weren't Numenoreans. Thus, I wanted to relate to Faramir because he was aspirational.

I can see why he mis-reperesented Helm's Deep because he wanted to pull some Elves in as the saviours of an hopeless situation but there was no reason for what he did to Faramir. Have seen a suggestion it was to change the timing because of other things he had done but then there's enough fuzziness in Frodo and Sam's travels to allow for that.

I’ve often wondered that myself. Possibly with his death protecting the hobbits... but I feel strongly that he wouldn’t have succumbed to the ring’s temptation like his brother
Farmir alive and fighting on in Osgiliath instead and the party not splitting (which may cause worse consequences) Farmir would not take the ring from Frodo or attempt to do so. the group would cross the river together and here is where the trickle effects begin. they would not have relied on goulum/semgol for a guide. From here Frodo and Sam had relied on stealth and passed a considerable number of orc divisions spies and other assortments of creatures. It could be argued that they would have all stopped at the gate [that this would be the end of their ques is vallid but it is likely that they would have come into conflict with easterlings or orcs attempting to find a way into Mrdor].
Yoystan did a theory video on this some time ago. The general thrust of it is that things would've gone too well. Faramir, despite his strong resistance to it, would have eventually been corrupted by being so close to the ring for such an extended time leading to the quest's failure. I agree with this theory, because if Frodo was eventually corrupted by the ring, Faramir most certainly would have been as well.
Boromir barely made it to Rivendell after a journey mostly alone and over a year. In Unfinished Tales Tolkien says Boromir's journey was something few would know of, something incredibly courageous.
I want to see more ME movies. I know we're getting a Amazon show about the second age and Numenor, but I feel Tolkien stuff belongs in the big screen. WB sould adapt stories they are allowed to from the LOTR appendix. What about a anthology trilogy? My ideas for it: -First movie would be the Oath of Eorl. I want to see how Rohan came to be and the alliance with Gondor. Also we could see more of the Easterlings in action. This can be also a great oppertunity to involve Galadriel yet again. She helped Eorl and the eothed crossing Mirkwood with the mystical mist. I would expanded it more by letting them meet up with a squad of elves lead by Haldir. They guide the eotheds to the Field of Celebrant and may participate in skirmishes with orcs and easterlings. Movie concludes with Eorl and Cirion swearing the legendary oath. -Second and third movie is Battle of Dale and, Dol Guldur assault on Mirkwood and Lorien. I would let the Mouth of Sauron lead the fight against Mirkwood, while Khamul attacks Lorien. The movie will conclude with Galadriel destroying Dol Guldur. I think this trilogy will bring back the grand scale of what the Hobbit lacks.
Let's not forget that Pippin named his son, Faramir...I wonder if their future families (Pip's Great Grandson and Faramir's Grandson) are still friends!!! You left out how Faramir recognised that Aragorn was his king the moment he laid eyes on him in the houses of healing even though Aragorn had entered the city in secret and laid no claim
The only thing I thought you were missing from this video of faramir was the speech when the Aragon returned to the gate to the city any truly showed his character and recognizing and realizing who the true king of the United Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor was any he called forth to the people to notify them as the ruling steward
And no less lethal a warrior than any of the Rangers North or South. Holding a river crossing with sword and bow against the forces of Mordor and leading a fighting retreat when overwhelmed puts him high on the list of fantasy soldiers.

Faramir is such a wonderful example of courage, wisdom, and humility. He's one of my favorites and I'm happy to see him get his own video.
Faramir's story always made me sad. The fact his Dad chose to play favorites was a real tear jerker.

Faramir was wise and lordly. He wasn't portrayed very well in the movie.
Yeah and the movie cud be 10 hours long.... (which i would love but a bit of a hard sell for the directors) Faramir literally has the ring at his finger tips and lets it go.... if that isnt showing hes a man of quality then i dont know what is

I like both versions of Faramir, the book and the movie. I do agree he was changed too much for the film, but I can see where they were coming from and he definitely makes up for it in the extended edition of Return of the King. :)
Thank goodness! I first read the title of the video as Faramir, Captain of the Guard, and I immedietly thought: "Oh no!!!! Poor Beregond has been demoted! for to my remembrance it t'was Beregond who was captain of the guard at least in Minas Tirith... XD
What Faramir stood for, as you said, are the things that the Kings of Numenor stood for at the very beginning. And had he not been as prideful, Denethor would have stood for as well. As Legolas said--"If Gondor still has such men in its waning, great must have been its Glory in its beginning."

I can definitely see him and Faramir showing the depths of their brotherly affection. Look no further than the deleted scene from the Two Towers along with how Boromir acted when he got tackled by the Hobbits.
@@BigBWolf90 how would the last defense of Minas Tirith change with Boromir leading the charge with his brother and Gandalf the White at the gate. Deneathor wouldn't go mad with sadness and could mount a stronger defense against the Orcs.
@@shadowofchaos8932 well Aragorn could have sent Boromir with Legolas and Gimli after Merry and Pippin so Aragorn would have met Faramir while Boromir helped Rohan at Helm's Deep. That's one option

Alas, Book Faramir and Film Faramir differ so much from each other in qualities.
Faramir wasn't sent on some "insane suicide mission" to try and retake Osgiliath. He was sent out to defend Rammas Echor, the wall that surrounds the Pelennor Fields and Minis Tirith. The wall isn't shown in the movies. He wasn't sent out by Denethor because of some crazy man's vindictiveness either (like it's semi alluded to be in the movie).
It was a genuine military campaign to damage Sauron's forces and delay them at the wall while as many defenses as possible could be devised and put in place, as well as buying time for allies to hopefully arrive. Faramir spoke against the idea because he, Gandalf, and Denethor all knew they didn't have the manpower to effectively defend the wall, but Faramir went forward and did his duty. Gandalf just asked him basically not to throw away his life trying to "impress dad".
Fast forward a bit to the bursting of the gates of Minis Tirith by Grond. At the moment the Witch King rides through the shattered gate and faces Gandalf the horns of Rohann blow and the Witch King is forced to lead his forces out to battle the Rohirrim. That's how close it came to battle being at the gate or even within the city. That delaying action at Rammas Echor may have saved a lot of potential grief and few people seem to catch that. Denethor may have been a asshole sending Faramir out there, but it wound up being the correct thing to do strategically in the battle.

...So it begins.
Faramir in the books was literally the personification of the Perfect Knight. He never had a single moment's doubt as to what his duty was regarding Frodo and the Ring.
He willfully went against what he knew his father the steward's wishes would be, right from the start. Boromir was second to none with swordplay, but Faramir was only just barely behind him. Furthermore he had also been tutored by Gandalf, so he knew medicine and lore and language and was an extremely complete package. He even looked forward to and supported the return of a rightful king to Gondor.
He fully embodied the knights of old, and it mildly enraged me that the films took the liberty of giving him hubris similar to Boromir. The entire point of his character is to emphasize the contrast between the imperfect father's love for the imperfect son, while the perfect son stood disdained in the shadows yet made perfect choices...choices worthy of a prince, which he ended up becoming...at every single turn.
Faramir is proof of the potential "strength of Man" other than Aragorn. It could be argued that Faramir's existence proves both Gandalf and Boromir right.
Gandalf knew and therefore was specifically referring to Aragorn when he made his claim, and Boromir was on his deathbed after failing himself, when he made his.
Since Tolkien was all about parallels and connections, this all makes me wonder if Boromir was specifically referring to his brother Faramir. Everybody picks examples based on their own personal experiences, right?
If true, then here is yet another layer of depth to his character that Jackson blasted into oblivion in his attempt to make him more "relatably human."
Which in turn says something in and of itself. If Faramir's original perfect character was considered unrelatable, then this logically means one of two things. Either Jackson himself couldn't personally relate to a human of that virtue, or he didn't think that anybody else in his target audience could.
...I feel like we should all be equally insulted by both possibilities.
Very true. There were a number of changes that Jackson made to the story I dislike but the character assassination of Faramir was by some way the worst!
The treatment of Faramir always saddens me because he was the most noble of the 'regular men' who weren't Numenoreans.
Thus, I wanted to relate to Faramir because he was aspirational.
@@rjward1775 Very true and it seemed such a pointless perversion of the story. I can see why he mis-reperesented Helm's Deep because he wanted to pull some Elves in as the saviours of an hopeless situation but there was no reason for what he did to Faramir. Have seen a suggestion it was to change the timing because of other things he had done but then there's enough fuzziness in Frodo and Sam's travels to allow for that.

How would the books have changed if Faramir had been sent to Rivenedll as was supposed to happen and not Boromir been sent and become part of the Nine Walkers?

Farmir alive and fighting on in Osgiliath instead and the party not splitting (which may cause worse consequences) Farmir would not take the ring from Frodo or attempt to do so. the group would cross the river together and here is where the trickle effects begin. they would not have relied on goulum/semgol for a guide. From here Frodo and Sam had relied on stealth and passed a considerable number of orc divisions spies and other assortments of creatures. It could be argued that they would have all stopped at the gate [that this would be the end of their ques is vallid but it is likely that they would have come into conflict with easterlings or orcs attempting to find a way into Mrdor].
Yoystan did a theory video on this some time ago. The general thrust of it is that things would've gone too well. Faramir, despite his strong resistance to it, would have eventually been corrupted by being so close to the ring for such an extended time leading to the quest's failure. I agree with this theory, because if Frodo was eventually corrupted by the ring, Faramir most certainly would have been as well.
Boromir barely made it to Rivendell after a journey mostly alone and over a year. In Unfinished Tales Tolkien says Boromir's journey was something few would know of, something incredibly courageous.
Faramir had to deal with Eowyn’s stew for the rest of his life. A man of quality indeed.

I want to see more ME movies. I know we're getting a Amazon show about the second age and Numenor, but I feel Tolkien stuff belongs in the big screen. WB sould adapt stories they are allowed to from the LOTR appendix. What about a anthology trilogy? My ideas for it:
-First movie would be the Oath of Eorl. I want to see how Rohan came to be and the alliance with Gondor. Also we could see more of the Easterlings in action. This can be also a great oppertunity to involve Galadriel yet again. She helped Eorl and the eothed crossing Mirkwood with the mystical mist. I would expanded it more by letting them meet up with a squad of elves lead by Haldir. They guide the eotheds to the Field of Celebrant and may participate in skirmishes with orcs and easterlings. Movie concludes with Eorl and Cirion swearing the legendary oath.
-Second and third movie is Battle of Dale and, Dol Guldur assault on Mirkwood and Lorien. I would let the Mouth of Sauron lead the fight against Mirkwood, while Khamul attacks Lorien. The movie will conclude with Galadriel destroying Dol Guldur.
I think this trilogy will bring back the grand scale of what the Hobbit lacks.

You left out how Faramir recognised that Aragorn was his king the moment he laid eyes on him in the houses of healing even though Aragorn had entered the city in secret and laid no claim

The only thing I thought you were missing from this video of faramir was the speech when the Aragon returned to the gate to the city any truly showed his character and recognizing and realizing who the true king of the United Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor was any he called forth to the people to notify them as the ruling steward
