    Can anyone explain why they are using two different kinds of welding techniques there? Like, why not just use one for everything?

    • @infinitytec
      @infinitytec Рік тому

      Friction stir welding is really great and has numerous advantages, but is difficult to do on curved surfaces. I know ULA is able to do this on the domes for Centaur, but it's a very special process.

    • @807800
      @807800 Рік тому +1

      @@infinitytec Thank you! It's just not worth the investment for them at this stage, I guess.

    • @AstraSpace
      @AstraSpace  Рік тому +5

      Thanks for the question @807800!
      In cylindrical pressure vessels, there is twice as much stress in the 'hoop' direction (around the circumference) than in the axial direction (along the rocket) within the tank skin material. This means that the weld that is in the axial direction is trying to be pulled apart the most, and the strength of that weld is critical for the performance of the rocket, as it drives the thickness (and therefore mass/weight) of the tank skin.
      We use a very high performing weld there, as it is relatively simple to do a friction stir weld in a straight line. It is quite complicated to do a friction stir weld around the circumference of the tank, and the weld doesn't need to be as strong, so we chose a simpler and common weld method for the circumference.

    Astra desperately needs to show reliability with LS 2/Rocket 4. Yes, failures happen, but there have been a lot of failures in what, by footprint, is a very attractive rocket. There are only so many chances Space Force can give them to produce a working mobile launch, soft land ICBM before they pull the plug on the concept.

    The comments are interesting and while lots of people are rooting for Astra, myself included, you can’t ignore that it doesn’t all look good. In fact… about 90% of it looks really bad. Lay offs, shares and stocks in free fall and NASA satellites lost. Here’s hoping the next launch works because if it doesn’t, it most certainly will be the final nail.
