This video is really good to see first thing in the morning. We've been leaning on our area, both my own loose group of buddy vets and the local ARES, to do more packet work in field (we are smack dab in the middle of the Helene affected area). I'm probably one of the few software / networking folks that gets the issues that comes up with Wires-X, YSF, D-Star and Ecolink (etc) with Sats and ISPs (Port routing/ IPv4 vs IPv6 issues / etc) during a disaster. I'm real big on, after decades in IT, not relying on either terrestrial or sat based ISP networks for disaster radio work. Starlink won't route alot of the digital modes used by Hams. The big struggle, to me, was finding the right software suites I can say 'Consider this instead', there is alot out there to consider. I've been pushing digirig (I do like the Mobilinks) and Android / iOS tablet set up partially based on your videos and the guy from England. I get what your are saying/doing. Video came at the right time.
If it's connected to the Internet, it can and will fail. This is part of the reason that I opted against adding an IGate mode to the APRS digipeater mode.
This was a wonderful surprise this morning!!! I just started working with the packet stuff last night in 3.18 and so far so good. Looking forward to Thursday!!! Thanks and 73!
Unliscensed South Floridian here- just got the beuphuang f8hp pro a week ago and have only listened to a couple local nets. Had to learn to program repeaters by hand before the tidradio bluetooth deal came in. It helped me at least copy that list of channels and functions into the other four ar5rms that I got for family. Notarubicon got me started, ham radio crash course is teaching me alot, but your channel is by far the coolest. I never knew off grid comms was a thing, and the packet stuff you do really is like wargames. This is cool as fuck.
I like what you are doing with packet. I used packet bbs systems when first licensed long before I had home internet access. You have made amazing progress with EmComm Tools! Thanks for the update!
I missed the packet days as I was late to the computer scene and didn't start until I was in high school. I had friends that were into it, but by the time I was interested in using a BBS they were all replaced by dial up to services like AOL. Let's bring this back. I'll be starting a pilot program with my local group here next month after the ETC documentation is complete for this release. 73
I’m one of those that’s only been an official member in the last month or two. But, your heads down dedication to getting ECT to a releasable state is what convinced me that it was worth putting money towards! Keep up the awesome work, Gaston. I’m rooting for you!
Gaston, in the 80s we had a well working packet radio network on VHF/UHF here in EU too. Some links and user nodes in 9k6 and later in 19k2 but mostly on 1k2. Also we did TCP/IP over AX25 - what a experience 🙂The book 'NOSintro' from Ian Wade, G3NRW was our bible .... Stable WL2k access with really small footprint is on VHF/UHF in 1k2 with Digirig-Lite and a handheld. I'm happy to have a PR-node with a link to a CMS in our town. Tnx for your outstanding work and I'm looking foreward to testout the upcoming ET-R3. 73 de Wolf, oe7ftj
Hey Gaston, good to see you again and congrats on the ETC release coming up this week. Love the pup walking around and enjoying the day! 73, Becky N4BKY es Mike N4FFF
This for stopping by, guys. I hope the CW activations are treating you well. The pup loves hitting the trail. I'm finishing up the documentation for the ETC release coming on Thursday.
Good to see you out in field again, Gaston! I have a similar pole, but mine is a window washing squegee pole. My Elk dual band attaches to it easily. Thinking of using my folding portable shovel as a mount with some u-bolts around the handle, but haven't tried it out yet. I am impressed with your progress on the software, and I like how much shade your setup provides. Looking forward to more videos, and hope you have a great Thanksgiving! 73, Brett K5WXP
Morning, Bret. In love for hitting the backcountry and I needed to run one more test using the build directly pushed to GitHub, so we all win. I've been considering the Elk for a long time as I like the ease of changing the polarization by rotating it 90 degrees. It would be great for 2m SSB and VHF.
Wow this looks amazing Gaston! I wonder, can you predict what would happen if one selects FT-891 option you designed for the DR-891 but is using a plain Digirig and running the USB-B for cat control straight to the computer rather than the nifty approach that the DR-891 facilitates? TLDR - will this work the old way with the FT-891 before the DR-891 hit the market?
I have no idea whether that will work, but it's worth trying. The 891 was the hardest radio to integrate and got pulled from the list twice. If you don't need CAT control and don't mind tuning your radio by hand, just use the DigiRig Non CAT option.
This is great do hear. Glad to to see another operator embracing packet radio. Have your run Linbpq or any other BBS software? I'll share the journey with the community as I make progress on my node. 73
Good planning. Love to see and try your software / app first hand after I get shack in place after move. Would be nice to show the regional ARES group the capabilities instead of relying on dependent old unreliable outdated grid and AWIN / Internet infrastructure.
My county and the ones surounding me depend on internet infastructure as if it will never fail. I have tried talking with the Directors of Communication here and I was told I, nor Amateur Radio was needed. If HH had moved more eastward closer to me (I am about 1 hour west of the OBX, NENC) and created the devistation she did, this area would have been in a terrible mess. I am looking forward to the software TTP has developed!
@@k4ary Sad to say I have helped many years ago several small groups abandoned from local and state / federal help / encouragement of these groups of ARES members ( volunteering time and resources on there own money ) to help the areas they served. Nice some did it anyway and showed their training and commitment to render help as they where training / Elmered. Recent emergencies have shown people pulling together can do wonders when needed. THANK YOU GASTON FOR YOUR HARD WORK.
That's exactly why I built it. I wish I had a turnkey solution when I first got started 4 years ago. Good luck with the move, the shack and the pitch to your ARES group.
My wife picked it up at the local hardware store. I have no idea what brand it is as it's been outside for the last year. I have some thoughts on modifying to double as a walking stick and incorporating a built-in guy system.
@TheTechPrepper that's a good idea. I always forget, do you have a 3d printer? With your climate, you'd do fine with one. The humidity kills me out here. I love that thing. I can print you up some stuff if you model things. 🤙🏾
Excited for the release. I’ve got a surface go 2 running r3. Getting pretty familiar with Linux file system now. Was able to make a udev rule for the All in one cable (AIOC) , json for the device, et-radio, and an edit to et-audio to set levels for this device. So far working all but having it display the radio in Conky. Pretty sure I missed a line or character in my edits Gonna need a navit tutorial that thing is a bit oooof. Gonna try and get organic maps working .
Question: Would the FT-857 configuration also work the the FT-897? I still don't have an 857 but do have my beloved 897 and 817. Thanks and very cool video!
Does anyone know if the version of Linux under the hood is kernel 6.4 or newer? Hoping to run emcomm tools on an old rugged(ish) Chromebook with firmware to allow an UEFI OS.
@@cchalfantusa If you have a 64-bit Intel-based computer that works with Ubuntu 22.10, then EmComm Tools Community will work. ETC is built on top of Ubuntu 22.10.
