I enjoyed most of the video, but I wanted to point out that most of the associated depression and isolation that D/deaf and HOH people experience is due to hearing people not caring to try to communicate with us, not because we're hard of hearing. People making even the slightest effort alleviates it a lot, even if it's just being flexible and willing to use paper and pen to communicate or being patient with repeating yourself and making sure you're facing us and have our attention or taking the time to learn basic sign language. It's also paramount to note that the inaccessibility of hearing aids heavily contributes to the isolation of late-deafened people, who often end up just having to accept their hearing loss and resultant isolation because they can't afford hearing aids and the people in their lives are often impatient and unwilling to put in effort to help them maintain a social life. Gotta admit it was more than a little disorienting and saddening to get to the end of such a nice video to hear it implied that deafness leads to "brain decline", too - the correlation once again largely relates to societal isolation which is a *very easy* fix that just requires people being patient and willing to put in a little effort (seriously, why are we always expected to put in all the work to communicate with people who can't even be patient?). And none of that even applies to Deaf people who aren't isolated at all because there's a vibrant Deaf culture in many countries (it has its own issues too, but I think that's true of any culture). I get that you're playing a doctor character and I obviously know that both ableism and audism run deeeeep in the medical field, I'm actually working on getting into med school myself to try to "be the change", and you definitely sounded like an audiologist, but there's a reason I dread those appointments. I just wanted to share a perspective that I don't think gets acknowledged very often, especially as most people don't realize that D/deaf people often have some residual hearing and of course by definition all HOH people can hear to some extent, and a lot of us do watch UA-cam!
I'm hard of hearing and have been for several years. My right ear basically doesn't work. I will also never be able to afford hearing aids because I live in the US way under the poverty line. I am well aware of the ableism, including my internalized ableism that sneaks up, and I haven't experienced a single person that has adjusted their volume or been patient with me when I need them to repeat sentences or speak clearly. In fact, many people get aggressive or mock me. I know that it's ableism on the part of other people that leads to the depression and isolation, and I am aware that the many studies that link Alzheimer's disease with untreated hearing loss are not exactly sure why but oftentimes mention that it may be because the brain is straining to understand and the isolation that comes with a world that doesn't give a shit about disabled people. I acknowledge what you're saying, but I'm not sure where I went wrong in mentioning this information - I know that it sucks and it shouldn't be that way and it should change, but right now, as of this moment, these are experiences that one with untreated hearing loss will likely deal with. I didn't say it was the fault of the person having hearing loss, just that this is what often happens when one does have hearing loss. This is a roleplay in a perfect world where no one has to deal with insurance, and it's carried in a clinical manner as if this were a perfect world, and in that perfect world, one would mention that untreated hearing loss has consequences that aren't obvious and there is a way to treat it and this is it. I'm sorry it was not to your taste and I hope you find something that is. Thank you for your perspective.
I want to add that I am also incredibly frustrated with this world on its treatment of people with disabilities when the fixes are easy. In a perfect world, that wouldn't happen. But this isn't, and I hope someday it is, but for now I do wish to be realistic. Edited to add: I'm sorry this world sucks for you too, I wish it was different, and I hope you are able to make a difference. Thank you.
First of all holy crap that was a fast response on a two week old video lol! I wasn't trying to say you went wrong, I'm just bad at communicating! The more I've paid attention to the ableism the more pissed off I get and I think it's just leaking out. I was responding to the information itself, not to you presenting it (which I tried to express in my last paragraph but clearly unsuccessfully 😅 rereading it I combined too many thoughts into not enough words - I was trying to preemptively address the seemingly inevitable "lol but if you're deaf how are you on UA-cam" that tends to crop up in responses to my comments!), and I mentally - subconsciously - wrote it as a follow-on to a message I'd just written on the topic so lots of missing info lol. Oy. My apologies for being muddled and shit at communicating lol, I hope I didn't offend too badly!

Oh, and I thought it'd be neat to do a flat earth travel agent roleplay where the viewer books a trip to a resort at the end of the world. The viewer would need to sign lots of waivers absolving the agency of responsibility should they fall off the side and whatnot.
