A cool trick to learn is to cut from the crotch of your saddle keeping your torch facing straight down all the way to ears of the saddle, roll your pipe and do the same cut from crotch to ear, that helps flatten the ears out enough to get a decent fit.

Cannot fathom what it would cost to pay someone else to do it, trying to collect the knowledge I'd need to tackle it myself over time. Also trying to decide on the tools I'd use. Looking at a stick welder capable of 6010 and 7018, a plasma cutter for cutting saddles, and a generator to power these things. Any chance you could shed light on how to attach the cattle panel? Or maybe how many lbs of welding rods I'd need?
@@Masterrex well, I would probably suggest finding an engine driven welder. An engine driven welder like the one I'm using in the video serves as a generator and a welder. I would recommend getting a cutting torch like the one I'm using in the video. It's a lot more versatile than a plasma. You can use it to heat up metal to bend it, or you have the ability to braze weld metal with it. The only real reason I personally see a need for a plasma is in a CNC situation. It will only cut as smooth as your hand is steady, plus you have to have electricity and an air compressor to operate it. As toward the second part of your question there's a couple things to think about. First off, if I were going to use a cattle panel I would have to have something at the top and the bottom to weld it to if the fence will be holding any livestock. Animals will always try reaching under a fence to get to the greener grass on the other side. If it isn't well supported at the bottom its going to get bent up. The other issue with taking something that is premade and trying to use it for fencing is that you're taking something that is straight and square and putting it in an un-straight un-square situation. The only way it will really work is if your ground is level. I guess that's the short answer to your question, lol.

Your fit-ups are really neat and nice. From a time saving perspective, would it have been faster to sumply cut a hole in the vertical posts and insert the horizontal pipe? This would save on coping.
When you get your routine down and have a system that works for you, it will go pretty fast. I'm not sure if I have a really good reason for why I don't like the hole cutting method. My personal opinion is that this is stronger. Hole cutting is probably strong enough for most fences. If you're going to cut a hole, your post need to be quite a bit larger than your rail. If you have a 2 7/8 post and a 2 7/8 rail, then you aren't cutting a hole. You're saddling a pipe. Even if you use 2 3/8 rail on a 2 7/8 post you aren't going to have any post left after cutting the hole. I would like to make another video on how I make my templates and such, but I need to find time and a camera person. One other thing about hole cutting is that if your fence is running up hill or down hill your going to need oblong holes. On one post you'll have a gap at the bottom and the other post will have a gap on the top. Theres many ways to build a fence. This is just the easiest way I have found.
The main reason is that 99.9% on the time, I'm doing this on fences that travel over distances or corrals in remote areas. All of the plasma cutters that I'm familiar with require a fairly significant air supply. I would have to rework my welding trailer and purchase a dedicated compressor that would sit on my trailer. I don't do this work very often, and that compressor would see very little use. This is the same way we've done it for 50 years and have just never changed. If I were just starting out, I might weigh out my options, but I've just never felt the need to change.

I was wondering how you got the mouths in line and then bam you showed us. Just got done watching a guy drilling a hole to put pipe in. Like learning tips from you guys. Not sure if those metal posts get pounded in or holes drilled first then filled with concrete. How's it done in the Midwest.
We use to concrete the post in the ground. We now hire a man with a vibratory post driver to come drive the post in for us. We are in Texas and in this part we have shallow soil then solid rock. No matter how you put them in the ground they aren't going anywhere. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm planning on building another corral in the fall, and I think I'll post some more videos then. Now it's a little too warm here for doing that sort of work if you don't have to. We're supposed to get our first 100° day here next week.

You can buy metal ones pre formed with a hinge that wrap around the pipe to join same size pipe, but in this case I was butting 2 7/8 to 3 1/2 I believe. If you're joining same sized pipe you can get the pre made ones from nearly any welding supply store, Ebay, or Amazon. If you are doing what I did with dissimilar size pipe you can use one of the premade ones to get a rough start on the pipe, then work on the pipe with a grinder until you get a nice fit. After that use what is referred to as a pipe wrap like I'm using in this video, cut a piece off of the end, and trace out your finely tuned pipe to make a template. A pipe wrap is like a flexible tape measure that you wrap around pipes for lay out work. If you don't want to spend the money on that you could make your own out of a file folder or something. A pipe wrap is made out of a similar type material. I've also taken the factory metal templates and worked on them with a grinder to fit whatever size pipe I want to join it to. I know that was a long answer and I'm probably not the best at explaining things, but hopefully in all of that I answered your question.
Well, it was pretty windy and that makes it a little tougher. Like I mentioned in the video. I'm not a professional and I don't do it every day. As a matter of fact, I haven't saddled a pipe since then.
Nah I slowly adjust it tell it's screaming at me sometimes I'll leave the tip loose so it sounds like a gun and when my boss comes walking I turn it even higher urs got being a puzzy down though.

I wish I were that good with a torch, I use a mitered bandsaw to get my copes; not as fast but a lot cleaner than my torch cuts.

That was 7/8". I've used 3/4 before, but it flexes a little more than I care for.
just mark the pipe in the center and cut a 45 on each side with a bandsaw/torch super easy
