Respectfully, the national teachers association have been calling for this for years because they know that children study & perform better when tested in their home languages throughout school and not only in English or Afrikaans. By enabling education in regionalised languages and make English the secondary, matriculation marks are projected to improve which will push for more books & education in home languages to improve out of school & tertiary education. This in turn, creates young South Africans who may be less intimidated to study further or enter industries where English is the dominant language. It is literally bridging the gap. We are dropping in education levels in Africa, let alone the world. It’s not the wrong discussion because we can accommodate and prioritise many issues, and Ramaphosa has made this an educational priority many times in SONA addresses. This is one of the big ones in education: comprehension and literacy.

Make up your minds. I agree that a child will do better if taught in their Mother tongue but where are the schools and books and teachers to do so? After 30 years how many schools has this Government built? Easier to just take over another school. So are the English or Afrikaans speaking children now expected to switch to another language, not their Mother tongue, to accommodate another language group? A child may not be denied entry to a school, agreed but if that school is not teaching in the medium of their language then they are going to have to be taught in the language of that school, which defeats the object. Bullshit baffles brains here. Look to the people who spat in the faces of the black child, who decided that they could not reach the academic standard of the white child, despite the many who have surpassed them, whe decreed that 30% was all that they were capable of, thereby reinforcing a false inferiority.
