  • Highlights of the 1988 Charity Shield, with Liverpool gaining a measure of revenge for their Cup Final defeat to Wimbledon by winning 2-1. John Aldridge responded to the return of Ian Rush from Juventus two days earlier with two great finishes for the Liverpool goals. John Fashanu scored for Wimbledon.

    Barnes quick thinking for the first goal was fantastic. He is still my favourite Liverpool player of all time.

    Top stuff Dave! I missed this game when it was live, but I remember wishing if only things were different in May. We were robbed of two doubles in 88 & 89. That pain will never leave me.

      Yeah we lost em fair n square but losing in 88 was painful as not expected and then losing in the final seconds in 89 was just plain gut wrenching. Even 90 we lost a good semi final but once again shouldnt have lost to Palace especially as we spanked them 9-0 earlier that season.

      The reason that semi final was lost was due to Ian Rush's injury after half an hour the whole shape of them team was lost

    That Wimbledon keeper was 20 years before his time, racing off his line as most top keepers do today. Shame he wasn't very good at it.

    I remember Aldridge scoring these 2 goals, and then a hattrick at Charlton in the next weekend.
    5 goals in response to Rush's signing.
    Liverpool were so unlucky not to win the Double.

    This is the game hardly anyone talks about. The day Liverpool got their revenge. To be fair. The Charity/Community shield is nothing more than a glorified friendly.

    3:48 So it was John Fashanu who invented the aeroplane goal celebration :-| And not Romario who did the same celebration 5 years later to qualify Brasil for the 1994 World Cup

    As a Liverpool fan back then I didn't want Rush to rejoin Liverpool because I thought Aldridge had filled that gap really well and I didn't want him to be out of the side. I actually thought it was detrimental for Liverpool to have re signed him at the time. I never agreed with the Aldo-Rush partnership either, you could only use one of them.

    • @slowerthinker
      @slowerthinker 4 роки тому +1

      "interfering with play" was in the written rule (there is a shanklyism along the lines of: what the hell is he doing on the pitch if he isn't trying to interfere with play). However it wasn't until the mid 90s that changes in the law meant that refs actually started taking this into account. When I were a lad you'd see pefectly decent goals like that one disallowed every week because one player was marginally ahead of the last defender when the shot was taken.

    Fuck they were good. Played soccer like rock stars.
    If you watch those fellas from 75 - 95. Because they owned football in those years they were seriously the best team.
    But the thing that truly made them great are the teams they played. When two teams are playing becoming a champion comes down to millimetres.
    Love my Liverpool but I always respect the opposition. Sometimes more.

      Would you have signed Rush back? If so, who should have played out of Rush, Aldridge and Beardsley? Aldridge was nearly 31 when he was sold, at a time when no one used squad rotation and having a player that good on the bench would have been a waste of his talent and the club's money.

    I would agree to 89 being robbed as we played the last 5 league games In the space of around 15 days due to Hillsborough and the last 2 on the Tuesday and then Friday ?
    No need for that ?!! Could of delayed it until the Sunday and then for sure we would of had the legs to carry us over the line.

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  6 років тому +1

      I think the original plan was for those games to be Monday and Thursday. Tuesday/Friday was the League's idea of being considerate. As Kenny said at the time, for the team to come as close as they did in the circumstances was an achievement in itself.

    I remember my dad telling me a few times that the programme for this game is really hard to get, rare in fact. Apparently because of a small print run. Anybody know about that?? Dave??

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  5 років тому

      I feel as though you've asked about this before, but I can't find the message if you did, so maybe I imagined it! I'm not a programme expert so I wasn't aware of this one being rare. I've had a quick look and it is possible to get hold of, but is more expensive (roughly £15) than Charity Shield games of a similar time.

    I was at the Charity Shield match in 1992 against Leeds. Fun match, Leeds won 4:3 if I remember correctly. However, just four years later and the team was totally different, and naturally the collective calibre of players in 1992 were nowhere near as good. I think Paul Stewart made his debut. Unfortunately Graeme Souness preached revolutiuon over evolution. And it was not a very good revolution at all....

    • @Dead-Ball-Situation
      @Dead-Ball-Situation 3 роки тому +2

      Liverpool really lost their way after 1990. They bought players you would expect Charlton Athletic or Manchester City to buy. Beardsley left and Barnes looked lost, he wasn't the same player either. It was terrible mismanagement of the team that was hard to recover from. Then Man Utd spotted the gap and took advantage. Liverpool really were the victims of their own demise.

      @@Dead-Ball-Situation Barnes had that Achilles’ tendon injury in summer 91’ and after that it was as if he spent more time on the treatment bench than on the pitch. Except for that, last hurrah in 94-95.
