In Australian remote areas we apparently DO have the odd charger every so often. Problem is, they have a diesel generator right next to them that kicks on when an EV plugs in! Not even kidding!
Lee, you have spare seats, three illegal migrants at £5,000 a pop would have reduced your costs.
Lol
They Don't have any money .
Don't give him ideas.
@@GAZZA888They pay several thousand pounds to the traffickers in order to get a place on a boat
That’s genieye 😂
The outback in Australia solved the problem easily .. charging stations are powered by a diesel generator right behind each one ..
That'll be ok because they can release the diesel gases away from cities and towns. Plus 1 litre of diesel in a generator would get me approx 100 kilometres of driving. It's a great start to using less diesel 😂.
Lee sorry mate i got it wrong , Not only have you been to drama school you are being nominated for a OSCAR and you deserve it mate Congratulations
Drama Queen School surely?
Now it all makes sense!😂

Hi Lee. Here in Australia, recovering from surgery watching your videos on my big screen TV is like having an old friend in the room with me. The standard of the production is wonderful. And "I think you'll find" that I am enjoying them a lot more than you do making them. Thanks again!!
Thanks Ross
I’ve enjoyed this set of videos. Thanks Lee.
Top class documentation of your trip. No clickbait. Extremely professional. Appreciate all the hard work that goes into vlogs like this. Well done Lee
Get a f**king diesel car . You know it makes sense.
What gets me is the total inability of people on the Continent to throw rubbish out their windows ! No blown out tyres, bits of plastic bumper what's going on hehe!
Good point. The UK's road verges are filthy. It tells you all you need to know about the mentality of its population? You even have to boil the water in certain places in England before you drink it. The UK really is a filthy nation. I have no idea why any tourists bother to come to the UK???
Lee,
I own an EV. I wouldn't call myself an evangelist, but I love my car it does 300 miles in summer, which is well enough for me.
I will never unsubscribe from your channel because you make me laugh so much.
National Grid have just announced they’re investing £60 billion in the next 5 years on infrastructure, to the end of 2029. I was working at National grid, until I retired 5 years ago, at that time it was estimated it would cost between 3 & 5 trillion, to upgrade the network for net zero by 2050. We often contemplated how high energy bills could go, to cover it.
Losing the will to live on this journey. And I'm sat at home.
My BMW 2.0 diesel is the dogs cahoonies.
EV= No Way.
Really enjoyed all of that and well produced too. Thanks for the brilliant series on the trip to Benidorm and nearly back.❤❤
I noticed on one of your chargers that there was a note stating that it was subsidised by the EU. No wonder it was so cheap.
All part of the EU persuading people that they need the EU.
Gotta love those open air charging points….you get soaked when it rains and boiled to a crisp in the sun. Here’s a good idea…why don’t they put a canopy over the charging area like they do over the petrol pumps?
In Northern Ireland we are restricted to 70mph but once you pass the Schools you can go faster.
What a marvellous way to do a trip, from charger to charger!
Yes, and in such lovely, picturesque places like industrial estates!
@@AntonHu or downtown Tollouse, shitting yourself that someone will nick your very expensive wheels
Like passing through a beautiful garden in a plastic tunnel on a conveyor belt.
The very fact you can do this (badly in your case) shows how far we have come already. North of UK to Southern Spain and back?
Ten years ago we had the Nissan Leaf for local shopping.
Don't feel bad. In the US our government spent $7 Billion, with a "B" on EV recharging stations. A year later they've built 8 recharging stations across the country and a few of them are out of service!
I drove hundreds of miles in my motorhome in France ,Spain and Portugal….never on motorways.
Their Route Nationals are the equivalent of our motorways and the local villages that you pass through have plenty of reasonable hotels, restaurants and campsites…. Winner all the way 🥂🍾 👍
I think your sister has a great taste in music ,RADAR LOVE ,what a tune hey
Idk what would drive me mad most, charging or your playlist 😂
I don’t usually watch your EV videos as not into cars etc. But have to say Lee I watched this one all the way through and it’s just amazing how hard you work for your channel! Couldn’t wish you more success 😊
Thanks Tina. X
Prehistoric toll booths, you don't have to stop at them in Straya.
I’ve toured France on my motorbike. The roads are great & the lane discipline is good. When we got back to Blighty it reminded me of how shocking ours is.
Is it me or is no-one else using the charge points, seems to show a lack of enthusiasm for EVs?
Spot on Lee! Great video, with great humor, and being a professional videographer for many years I also appreciate the editing and what it takes to make these videos entertaining ( the cutaways and different angles ). Much easier now with the iPhone video and Go Pro capabilities, not dragging around bags of DSLRS 👍
Cheers Mark.
I've got a driving song for you,Benny Hill..( Ernie ) driving the fastest milk cart in the west 😅👍
Absolutely loved this! Very entertaining! I’m just sat here on a Saturday afternoon, couple of glasses of red wine, just chilling watching this and thinking this is giving me better entertainment values than Top Gear.
Kudos, Lee, I love your style and the way you’ve put this together, and as a fellow UA-camr I really do appreciate the hours of editing you clearly put in, to make this what it is. Your dedication to the art of video making is obvious, and hasn’t gone unnoticed .
I’m also contemplating doing a very similar journey to visit my sister in Spain, in my campervan, so really appreciate the glimpse into what to expect. 😁👍
Anyway, Bravo mate, and thank for sharing 😊👍❤️
Hey thanks Rick. Just checked out your channel. Looks like you've taken a bit of a break. Have a glass of wine for me. 6.15pm tonight is the last leg of the journey back to Calais. It's a bit of a funny one. Hope you enjoy. You'll probably need to open another bottle. 😊👍🏼👍🏼
@@TheMacMaster lol! Cheers mate, I await within baited breath and have another bottle on standby 😂 🤣. 😊👍❤️

Lee.. You have a singular lack of patience..!! 😂
About 10 years ago we were making excellent, efficient and light petrol cars. I feel the push for EV interrupted our progress with this. Our focus should always have been on making better ICE and hybrids that go the distance and don't cost a fortune to fuel
Plus the move away from supermini's to bigger and heavier SUV's.
You could learn a language whilst waiting for car to charge...
Could also learn the meaning of life.....Monty Python...
I'd mainly learn expletives.
It doesn’t take that long people……..18 mins for 85% on fast chargers…
Or read War and Peace.......twice

*also, your choice of music for the video, is absolutely spot-on. It must’ve taken ages for you to pick it out, so more kudos 😊👍❤️
Thanks Rick.

Hey Lee. I've just come back from North Africa and they have loads of BYD cars.......all converted to gas 😂
Quite honestly Lee , I wouldn't say France has hit the mark with EVs at all , the inferstructure is fantastic but all the chargers seem to be void of cars .
Radar Love is a great track Lee.
Best part of this vlog, you making a dry ham baguette on the roof of your car 😂
You've got that many plastic cards, if your car burst into flames, you'd melt into bankruptcy.
Melting into bankruptcy? Fantastic expression 🎉😂
I must be missing something but don't think so. I clocked that those chargers are charging at 250kwh. Our house uses that much in a month!! Then I thought maybe there are other things like street lights that use such power.... but no, a quick google and they are only 150w for the main ones. So a car charger in one hour of charging uses the same as a house in a month or power a street light for 1666 hours!!!! This whole idea is nuts and that is probably why Spain seems to have its chargers in built up areas, simply cannot get that amount of power to anywhere else.
Good to see you didn't pick up any of the traditional French habits like urinating in the street and cruelty to geese.
What a marathon trip, Lee. Makes you appreciate what the truckers have to endure when bringing fresh fruit and vegetables Spain-UK.
I made a bowl of popcorn for this one. Seriously. 🍿
Enjoy. :0)
Epic endurance which speaks volumes about the comfort of those Porsche seats !
Sacre bleu is not french. The expression was invented in allo allo. Most French probably think it's an exotic paint colour.
No it wasn`t, Allo Allo started in 1982, Gillan (rock band) had a track on the Future Shock album called Sacre Bleu in 1981.
Mange Tout
Really enjoyed the road trips you've done. I did like your travel across France and the Milau bridge. Your showing very useful info for driving EV and for which it is really intense, especially for yourself where you have to plan where you have to charge up and good to show the difference with infrastructures to charge your vehicle between UK, France & Spain. Looking forward to see more road trips.
Jag skulle mycket gärna få tag på ett fordon med en v6 eller rak 6 a på 3 liter. Bensin eller diesel spelar ingen roll. Men inte nyare än 2005.
Fantastic content lee music great well with vocals anyway.
You've covered some miles ,get some rest and in the morning onwards let's go !!!!
The aussie trip will be a must watch
Electric cars and vans are nee good for long journeys, great video for showing the truth👍
No good when you make life difficult for yourself 🤣
There's actually places in Australia that you have to bring extra fuel in a gerry can.
Because there's no petrol station. Forget about an ev in these regions
As you have said in the past Lee, we need to be offered choice. In some applications, for some people in some areas, EV's work and work well. In other applications, they simply do not and will never work (or come close to working) as well as a IC car. I used to drive down through France to the east coast of Spain in one go, and could - including refuelling time and a few comfort breaks - get from Calais to the Spanish border in 10-11 hours (starting with a full tank in Calais and refuelling once one the way down). I could easily get 700 miles (1130km) to a tank of diesel, and so stopping to recharge every 200-250km (and subsequently having the wait for an hour of so each time) seems absolute madness! Also, I could choose my route down, in the knowledge that there would be at least one fuel station to refuel at every few miles - rather than be dictated to be the car. EV's have their place, but they are not the pancea they are made out to be (and don't start me on the so-called 'green' credentials of EV's!). It should be about choice, and whilst I would not go out of my way to knock those that choose to drive EV's, I fail to see why (1) we are being forced into them and (2) why, if it is all about 'clean air' and emissions (I would argue it is more about control and the profits of those with a vested interest in the net-zero madness), that manufacturers are not being encouraged to develop cleaner and more efficient IC engines. Afterall, IC engines have come a LONG way in the last 30 years, and I do not believe that IC engine technology has come even close to reaching its peak. And yet the net-zero ideology has been allowed to become the be-all-and-end-all, with EV's being (wrongly) forced upon us all.
Agenda 21, Colbalt Red and False Alarm are worth a read.
" I tried to follow the science, and found no science. I then followed the money, and that is where the science was lurking".
How many hours of your life has been spent /wasted charging ?
Lee,the character Kenny Everett played was Marcel Wave,Marcel Marceau was a French mime artist.
£400 just for the tolls plus the expense of charging, my God you could probably fly to New York and back for that though I do realise that's not what this video is all about.
Was thinking about same . The ability to”tax” ( across the board) has rendered considerations of value / cost otiose.
Hi Lee making me feel tired too really enjoyed that one music lovely Thankyou ❤
I think these videos are very entertaining. Love watching these. But why did you buy an EV? You would have enjoyed that trip so much in a Boxster.
He got suckered in. He’s trying to help others from falling in the same trap.
Lee would have test driven the Taycan perhaps over an extended period, weekend or whatever. Then compared it to the Petrol Porsche, he preferred the smoother drive and better performance and other advantages of the electric drive. Obviously he would have weighed the pros and cons and on balance brought the Taycan. For 95% of his off camera drives it will be fine but it always seems to go wrong on camera.
Epic journey well done respect
The British Psychology Association have been in touch with me. They ask if they can use this video in their training program. They need something that shows a human mind unravelling.
I still don’t understand why none of the chargers fully cover the cars like gas stations. That is a wasted opportunity to not use the space for solar panels and to keep rain and heat off of the cars when they’re charging.
That is because everyone tripped over themselves installing this crap before agreeing to standards. In the automation world where everything is networked, every company manufacturing automation equipment designed their own network physical structure, and the communications protocol used the connect devices. Needleless to say, there was no interoperability amongst these manufacturers' devices. End Users were then locked into one company, and costs ballooned. However, there is an USA standards group named ISA and a European standards group who strove to bring all of these hardware centric companies into agreeing to support a consistent set of network communication protocols where an end user could mix and match devices from companies and not be locked into one company (it is bad business practice to lock yourself into contracts with one supplier, as you are at the mercy of that supplier staying in business). That work took nearly 30 years! Electric chargers have only been a reality for a short period of time. You are going to see a large amount of obsolescence and revamping before EV chargers stabilize.
At virtually every single stop you charge to 100% giving you 365km of range. Next you drive 180km and stop again at around 50% charge thus ensuring you take more than twice as long to charge as you need to. The furthest you ever seem to drive is 50-60% of the potential range then insist on charging to 100%. On practically every stop you are staying for around an hour when 20 minutes would have been more than enough.
This is the complexity of long distance EV driving. The car works out the quickest options. Charging to 100% is slower. The last bit takes longer. Multiple short charges are quicker overall. 10 to 80% is typically the fastest part. But difficult to get your head around it! I don’t drive an EV but have watched videos on this topic. Driving the opposite direction to get a fast charger would do my head in! This is the future 🙄
Great video again - hope you recovered quickly.
In France Waze says "Police reported in the area" for speed cameras that are driver generated, the only thing Waze can provide is a generic warning like "entering a speed enforcement zone".
You should make your catch phrase: “Ohmwards, my friends!”
Good Evening my Friend Lee. Long distance driving can be fun, You must remember to take your Breaks and Yes, like you have done, booked yourself into a Ibis Hotel for the night. You really do need a Good Nights unbroken sleep. To get Proper Rest and Re-Couperation my Friend. France really has got it's Charging Infra Structure spot on, the road system is Excellent. It really does have some very Good road side Service Stations. Very modern and the Service is just the Best. I am really liking choice playlist Lee. Another track i would Love to play in my Audi, would be Queen's/ I Want To Break Free. The GPS Mapping is as Good, if the Satalite knows exactly were you are in the Country. The days of using the Big Road Atlas the your Parents used to use on the car journey's back in the day. Sat/ Nav can still get it wrong. I have an Up to date Tom Tom, that i have used in the past year or two. It is Absolutely Superb. Just have a Good sleep, a Good rest and have a Lovely meal and a drink, before You continue on your Epic and Challenging Journey Lee. We all, are with you my Friend. You are doing very, very Well. Have a very Safe and Stress Free Journey back home to your Loving Family. Big Respect to You. Jonathan.
Tolls are easy to pay through the driver window;
J-turn before the booth and reverse to pay point.
Pay.
Reverse out like the clappers into another J-turn and you're off. 🤑😁
Enjoyed the trip and the quality of the roads. I returned from vacation last week and ran into a rough patch of road on I95 in South Carolina and my wife looks at me and says "do you have to hit so many potholes?" I said "doesn't bother me, ain't my car (it was her Toyota)" That's when all men know when you get The Stare. Anyway her RAV4 hybrid will do 390 miles or 627 kilometers on a full tank and I honestly don't see the need for an EV when hybrids are so perfect.
You know what? I can't remember going to a petrol pump that didn't work. Not ever.
In the UK if the infrastructure catches up and EV’s start selling in large numbers then the electric will be taxed to equal current petrol/ diesel tax .
Lee I absolutely love watching you, you always make me smile, and your content is fab,but please will you do me a favour and get some new bloody trainers 😂
You're working hard on this one Lee.. highly watchable as usual. Your Ai thingy ought to tell you why it's rerouting via whatever route though.
The whole electric car things is completely Bollox, its all Net Nonsense

This is why I would never get an EV , nope petrol for me all the way
Carcassonne is a wonderful medieval walled city.
I never follow a navigation system - lord knows where it will take you. I plan a route the old fashioned way stick with it! (Yup - I can read a map!!)
That's the way to go👍
Travelling in EV is so slow that the sat nav keeps rerouting as accidents and road works ahead get sorted and completed by the time you reach those sections 😂😂😂
If you haven't been to Carcassonne yet , you are missing out your life ! It is fantastic !
Loved the video, Lee, quite a journey you are having. Can't wait til you come over to Australia again, to drive the Nullarbor, that will be very interesting 😄
For future reference, Lee - Butter = Mantequilla
Definitely not 'burro', as a French speaker might reasonably expect. He'd get a shock if they sold him one.
Lee, I think you should call your self made baguette a "Macaguette" - It could catch on!
Have you seen that Alex, in Mallorca, has broken 30k subs? - -
Yeah I congratulated her. She rocks!
Great video Lee. This is one hell of a journey.
Download ventura highway by a band called America. Top tune.
saw them in the Marquee Club, Wardour Street........a la HORSE WITH NO NAME
Love it 🤗
I’m guessing that the reason those roads in France are so clear and smooth is because no one can afford to use them, isn’t that a restriction of movement? I’ll take the traffic and potholes thanks if it means I haven’t got to pay 20 quid a day to use em. I bet all the roads that a toll free are crap like ours and there isn’t a charger in sight. Probably can’t afford electric cars anyway so it doesn’t really matter.
Lee iv had a bright idea get a solar panel on the roof 🌞 😂
just imagine if this was happening in the golden age of British film making, we could of had Syd James & Kenneth Williams starring in Carry on charging
and Cliff Richard?

I know it’s too late Lee, but you needed to ask for Mantequilla ( pronounce manta key a)
I don’t recall ever having to jump from fuel pump to fuel pump to get petrol flowing faster. What a gong show these chargers are. What a scam!
What happened to your travel companion did you forget to wake him up😃
Haven't we spent the past 125 years refining, improving and generally making cars more efficient and as stress free as possible? The inconvenience and frustration of EV's are on the level of the horse and cart!!
Hire recharged ones at coaching houses, like the days of dickins, and Oliver twist.

@gefleigh4264 🤣🤣 business opportunity. Buy up used EV's, staging posts and proceed as you say!
I would fly next time - much easier, quicker and cheaper. Leave the milk float at home.
The roads in France are better since they syphon of the EU money to spend on them. 😉(controversial)

no matter what the charging systems are the fact that my diesel will do 800Km's to a tank and takes 10 min to fuel up is a blessing i could not stand waiting so often to charge. even if we diesel junkies did eat every time we fuel up on a trip we would still not take the same amount of time damn it must be frustrating :)
