    Thanks for the video ! Just out of curiosity , if you had opportunity to run line level back in the Orion With XLR connection , would you prefer going for it instead of 1/4 '' jack ? or the difference is not noticeable ?

    I'm fairly new to recording and stumbled upon this video while searching for information on the Antelope Audio Orion Studio Synergy Core which I just purchased. It is on backorder and I won't receive it until March, so I thought perhaps I should begin to educate myself as this new unit will be a step up in sophistication for me. And this comment may in fact reveal that lack of knowledge in its likely misunderstanding or outright clueless misinterpreting of the subject matter of your very interesting video.
    This is a very cool topic you explore here. Using a hardware insert in the mixing stage sounds similar in concept to reamping, which I was thinking intuitively would have been done prior to mixing and is probably fundamentally different in terms of the processing of the signal. However, this makes me think. In your example, you're taking a signal from a track during mixing and routing it through the compressor, then back into a track - now affected by the compressor - for final mixing (I think). Is that kind of reamping, but by a different name (the signal is not being reamped, just reprocessed or more processed)? The ability to drive the signal more and to attenuate it with the trim sounds like a greater level of granular control over that signal, whereas with reamping it's just a matter of bringing the signal/track up to match line level. Not sure I'm right about that, like I said much of this is new to me.
    If you wanted to add something (saturation, distortion, or some other "effect-like" element) in the mixing stage, for whatever reason, seems like you could do that too. But that would be kind of ridiculous, one would want to have a track already recorded with the effect and prepared for mixing. But then I'm thinking again, this time not from a mixing engineers perspective, but more in terms of sound design or the importance of an effect to the color and character of a piece - not necessarily a song - that it might be beneficial to have the ability to really fine tune how that effect shapes the overall character or sensibility of the piece more comprehensively in the end.
    Consider a piece highly influenced or driven by (and here's what I'm really getting at) a guitar tone/sound/landscape (Busted, guitar player centric thinking!), couldn't one use the process you describe here, but simply replace the compressor with a guitar amp/pedals/effects signal chain just as one does in reamping, but just sent line in to the interface, not recorded with a mic? In this case, however, one would be waiting until all the other tracks are completed, the guitar track(s) included (dry or kinda dry), to allow more control and nuance using the guitar amp, pedals, effects, as the main character (like a vocal part) of the piece. Or, is that just stupid?
    Is what you described just a different version, but quite similar in conception to reamping? Or am I completely off base and have little to no chance of ever getting this. I ask because I have never experimented with reamping, but I have heard the end result on final recordings and it really seems to add something I really like. And to circle back to the Antelope Audio Orion Studio Synergy Core ... this newest version - and I think this is true of the rest of the Synergy Core lineup - has two dedicated reamping I/O accessible on the front of the unit. I'm looking forward to learning more about reamping and doing more in depth study of the recording process, which is why I watched this video twice and subscribed to your channel.
    Thanks for this video. Peace.

    Hi doug..can you help me with this ..i have an orion 32 gen3.. which goes into the dangerous 2bus+ via two dsub cables for16 channels of analog summing.. and the main output of the 2bus+ is coming back to orion on line inputs 17-18 back. So in order to get the main mix return printed on my DAW ,which is logic pro x, what routing should i create in the orion control panel ... Currently what i do is i route the line inputs 17-18 in the panel into usb rec 17-18 and also route the line in into the monitor out and the usb play of 17-18 into the 1-2 of USB play slots. Also in logic i create a audio track and mute that ... Can you help on this..love and regards.

I want to run (and record) pre-recorded audio thru my Neve 1073 preamp. I have tried all the logical ways but I can't figure it out...Any thoughts? So basically I have tracks that have been recorded "clean" and I want to run each one of them thru the 1073 for color and a bit saturation. Thanks man, Jess

      This may be needing routing in your zen tour matrix, usb out, to usb in. if the zen tour is pointing usb out to the outputs, and usb in to the inputs or whatever input format your using, it should see the signal.

    @Doug I'm curious what your longterm experience has been with this product. I'm looking at the new Orion Studio, but a bit worried about the horror stories around reliability and terrible support from Antelope. Sweetwater dropped them and I've called 3 different stores that carried them and all have dropped them recently. Not a great sign, but hard to know if these are quality control issues or some specific configurations that aren't well supported that perhaps Antelope doesn't want to broadcast. Thoughts on your experience and what you've heard from other owners?

    • @DougJenkins

      Well. At this point I own a 10 m pure 2 and orion studio hd, and Ocx clock. I know that antelope may not be considered the greatest as far as customer support, but man they have some amazing convertors! They also took some big strides forward insuring these products. I would not hesitate and give them a go.

    Hey Doug! Love the video, a quick question, has your Orion HD given you any problems? I got mine and I keep getting this message that reads “not enough ASIO outputs atleast 2 channels needed” or some bs so I was told by the one of the Techs at Antelope that it was my cable and I needed the original cable and all and long story short I don’t know why I keep getting that any help? (I’m running Windows 10 on USB 3.0)

    • @DougJenkins
      @DougJenkins  6 років тому

      I would totally reset the unit, and reinstall the control panel. The only issue I ever got was the usb wouldn't recognize it. Also try another usb port, I know if I ever had usb issues, it was caused from the card in my computer, Other then that, I will have to look into this problem, new to me.

      @Doug Jenkins Hey Doug, thanks for the reply man, I’ve actually tried that and it worked for a good while but after I noticed on my Devices Tab on Settings I get a message that says “Driver Error” so I’m hoping on a new firmware update or something that could do it, but I noticed the problem really happens after I plug in my Midi Key board via USB so maybe the computer uses the keyboard as output? what do you think?

    hey doug a newbie here and I need your opinion pls.
    So I just bought an external converter (symphony i/o) and I'm using it as a d/a on top of my main audio interface(ufx) at the moment. But then I had a question about setting it up along with my main audio interface, so I've sent an e-mail to apogee how to properly do it. And they have said to me that it is either better just using the rme audio interface directly to the speakers or use the symphony as a main audio interface becuase the sound quality will reduce when the signal is passing through 2 different converters (RME - symphony - speakers).
    I personally have seen so many recording and mixing studios using these external converters on top of their audio interface because the main interfaces are very stable to use but they wanted better quality d/a or a/d converters along with it at the same time. So I honestly can't find the wrongs from my situations and where to begin with.
    my current set up is (main outs from RME - main inputs of Symphony - main outs from Symphony again directly to the speakers) and becuase I wanted to use symphony as a converter, I've set the mode in Standalone which is the mode that makes symphony as an a/d or d/a converter only.
    Thanks !!!!

    Bummer that the Orion Studio makes you send line level signals exclusively through quarter inch cables. I have an Orion Studio rev 2017 that I'm setting up with a patchbay in my studio and now considering getting a Clarett Octopre or something similar to add 8 channels of dedicated line inputs over ADAT. that or use a multi-channel DI box/ multiple DI boxes to convert all my line level signals to Mic before hitting the Orion, which I prefer not to do for various reasons! Thanks for the video!

    teacher that good educational and informative video, I bought a zentour antelope and at the same time with a lot of effort a DB25 spdif input cable supposedly with analog flavor with outputs type XLR R / L and I want to return the signal that comes out of the DB25 of the zentour and insert it to the input of the same interface and I have problems with the configuration of the patchbay in the antelope program but now with your video my mind has opened, I just need to know if I need any other hardware in addition to my interface and the cable because the company says that He sold me the cable that can be used for summing, which is what I am looking for, I do not know if you understand me to feed the audio signal that comes out of the DB25 connection with the analog circuit of the cable and return it to the rear inputs of the interface, I would like Someone help me with this, I appreciate the video friend

    I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely inconvenient that most interfaces do not have DSUB inputs to compliment the same number of outputs.
    I’m trying to establish a central patchbay for literally all my routing (excluding monitor feeds), and I need access to every one of the channels on the interface, but the zen studio is literally the only one (in my price range) that has both DSUB outs and ins.
    I don’t want more mic pres than what’s on the interface and I don’t want to use ADAT or spdif. Simply, I just want a bunch of analog ins and outs. Why is it that so hard to find in an interface? This is a huge headache!

    • @DougJenkins
      @DougJenkins  6 років тому

      Davitski P, I think the greatest interface for what your describing is the Antelope Orion, not the Antelope Orion Studio, that has 32 in and 32 out all dsub, but I feel your pain man!

    • @wafflestoast5228
      @wafflestoast5228 6 років тому

      Yes the Orion 32 does exactly that, but it really only serves as a converter, not a fully loaded interface! I'm on a mission to maximize bang/buck and try to kill multiple birds with single pieces of gear. My budget is tight considering the tasks I need to accomplish
