Sorry for my ignorance here, but I was kind of hoping for more of an explanation or example for the difference between using the weight vs losing the weight. I'm wondering how much difference it would make on an old lathe with the old flat belt pulleys, where it would be the pully on the motor to a large 13 inch pulley, that runs a cone pulley shaft, which would then use a flat leather belt to turn the main lathe cone pulley shaft. I figured, if the weight on the lathe chuck was spinning and all of those pulleys as well, maybe that would be kind of the same as the weighted original pulley on the motor, where they would all keep it going for awhile until it stopped. I'll hopefully get a chance to make this thing spin tomorrow, but I wouldn't be able to make it spin with the original weighted pulley on there, because I'd have to have the lathe working first, in order to modify the weighted flywheel pulley. Kind of a chicken and egg situation here... LOL I guess if it works, it works... But would be interesting to find out if you had anything to say or add to this for me please?? Thanks
It comes down to torque. If the motor has enough torque then the flywheel isn't as critical especially with the spinning mass of other parts, but if the motor is at all undersized the kinetic energy stored in the flywheel helps compensate for the motors shortcomings. With treadmill motors torque is everything and that is why I have devoted several videos to that subject alone.
For my upcoming drill press conversion I'd prefer to remove the flywheel/fan and file the shaft down to mount the pulley. Would a USB fan mounted at the opposite end of the motor (bottom since motor will be vertical ) be adequate or do you recommend another fan to cool the motor?
Hey I'm currently dealing with this issue as I need to use the fan flywheel but run It in counter clockwise direction. You mentioned in the video that the smaller motor flywheel needed heat to release from shaft. So, I'm thinking that that is all I would need to do to ensure my flywheel doesn't go it's own way,apply locktite and all will be fine. Would you tend to agree with the solution? That is a true statement on the bigger ones that have not been loctited, but the small ones that use loctite (I have 5 small ones and it was all of them) it will not come loose running it backwards. The flywheel doesn't have enough mass, and I don't think it would matter even if is was much bigger as I was not able to get it loose using a large wrench. Heat was the only way.

I can’t get the flywheel off mine. It had a nut that came right off but the flywheel seems stuck. Idk if it’s threaded on or pressed on.

@@dazecars ok thanks I sent 2 pics. I just went to harbor freight and got a 2 jaw pulled set. I was in town so it seemed like a good idea to have it.

yes loctite is an excellent optio to run it in reverse and not have it un screw.
u can also spin it backwards and that will break the pully loose(don't ask me how I know)

How do i remove the keyed flywheel
loosen the set screws and then pull it of or lightly tap it off with a rubber mallet.
@@dazecars mine must be really jammed on. I smacked it with a hammer and it still won't budge. Im picking up a pully puller today.
