    The CRT's, the CFL light bulbs, the Cobrahead Street lamps and Windows Vista / 7 is tech that makes me nostalgic, and makes me look at new tech with me thinking it's really advanced and interesting but very boring and dull to look at. I wish style would come back to tech! Implement the latest tech with the old design fashions should be the way!

    I think I would prefer hi-scan model over super fine pitch because I think it would hide lower quality stuff more like 480p antialiasing or just low quality older TV shows whereas the super fine pitch would try to make it look like a more modern TV, all the while still not being as clear as a modern TV. It’s not clear enough for new stuff but not fuzzy enough for old stuff. But I’ve not compared them.

      @FairyKid64  5 місяців тому +1

      Oh yeah, for sure! Yeah, the models that came out before are really nice too. And no - this isn't the last consumer CRT TV Sony ever made. They also made an XBR970 after this one, as well as some SD consumer sets. However, this was the last one they ever made that had a "Super Fine Pitch" tube inside it. The XBR970 that came after, while still awesome, is a bit less clear. But I would imagine it looks pretty similar - probably identical in most cases when watching an actual movie and sitting a good distance away from the screen. I don't have a 970, but I've talked to many people with them and they say they love it too! Same with your model - just because it doesn't have HDMI doesn't mean it isn't awesome!! 😎

    Having owned a few CRTs (all Sony), these were the best Sony had to offer before they released the Bravia line of TV’s. it’s just a shame they’re being recycled at an alarming rate

    👍 Thanks for a well-lit upload showing the internals after removing the case. That *_was_* dirty.... Makes me wonder what's inside my 27" SD WEGAs now.
    🔥👉 6:30 (top right of connections - "iLink/s400") .... 14:28.....
    ✏️📌It may be noteworthy:
    🚫 I am unsure if damage can be caused so I am warning against connecting either of those s400/iLink firewire jacks on Sony's CRT TVs or any other products to the s400/iLink Firewire system-link jack on PS2 consoles - model number SCPH-3900X and older. iLink/s400 firewire on PS2 consoles was not used for sending audio or video. Even though PS2 was a Sony product, the only other hardware aside from another PS2 console that can be connected to a PS2 is a *_dedicated firewire hub_* connecting additional PS2 consoles. Don't succumb to any temptation to mixing and matching PS2 consoles plugged into a FireWire Hub with any other devices if there is ever an itch to get more utilization out of the hub for various types of old hardware. If need be, go through with the cable swapping to either only have PS2 consoles or, if the CRT TV supports multiple simultaneous devices, devices other than PS2 consoles routed to the hub to save on purchasing dedicated hubs-one for the PS2 consoles and one for all other products into a respective, supporting device. This dissemination may not have been clear at the time the two pieces of hardware contemporaneously coexisted.

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64  Рік тому

      Yeah, that's a good point. I also wonder if damage could occur if you connected a PS2 Firewire port to this TV. It would be a good idea to research first. It's probably better to just use the PS2 component or RGB output.

    Just got the xbr970 variant of of this model over the weekend with matching stand for 100$ and I love it. Went through service menu last night and got everything pretty well tuned atm. However I’m not sure if this is typical of hdcrts but when I compare it to my Sony sdtv I notice that the image in general is darker. My brightness is set to 90 and picture is at 35. Is their anything else I can do to boost the vibrancy? I have it set to vivid currently.

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64  Рік тому +2

      Nice find! I've heard great things about the 970!
      After doing this video, I made another video comparing SD content from a GameCube with an S-Video cable to a GameCube with component cables at 480p ED (enhanced definition), and the SD (480i) content was quite a bit darker than the ED (480p) content, whereas on a SD CRT, the SD signal was a lot brighter. Basically your same results. I think these HD CRTs - while they allow SD connections, they really shine with 480p and higher. Have you tried 480p on it? Is it still dark?

    • @phillipdorofy5149
      @phillipdorofy5149 Рік тому

      @@FairyKid64 that’s primarily what I use it for 480p 720p gaming. Mainly ps3 and Xbox 360. It’s just that their are parts of an image where it’s too dark like detail is lost. I tried to calibrate it to the Xbox one built in tool. When it comes time to adjust contrast I can’t as their is no option for contrast. Just picture, brightness, and color. I wonder if their is an option to adjust it in Service menu?

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64  Рік тому

      @@phillipdorofy5149 Ah, gotcha. I haven't messed with the service menu yet on these HD CRTs, but from what I can tell from what you're describing, it sounds like black crush. You might already know this, but black crush is a problem with all display types - not just CRTs. LCD, Plasma, OLED - all suffer from black crush at differing degrees. You mentioned that you had your 970 in Vivid mode. Vivid mode is notorious for having black crush in my experience. Not just on CRTs. It's the mode that new TVs often come set as the default because it's the most punchy as far as colors go. When people are comparing TV models on a show floor with lights shining as bright as the sun inside, often the most punchy looking TV gets bought - hence why vivid is the default mode. You might want to try either the standard or pro modes. I found on my 960 that while the colors didn't pop as much in those modes, black details were better preserved. Same thing with my Sony OLED TV. Plus your eyes get used to the dimmer colors after a while anyways - especially if you're in a darker room. Have you tried comparing vivid to standard or pro modes to see if it helps with the black crush? I hope it's something simple like this and not a hardware problem. Usually it is something simple.
      Edit: Forgot about cinema mode. That's a good one too. Probably cinema and pro will be best for eliminating black crush.

      @@FairyKid64 ahhh ok yes I didn’t know that. I’m kinda a novice to picture calibration. I’m getting more into it now and it seems like a rabbit hole lol. I will try the pro mode and readjust the setting according to the Xbox suite. But I can’t get the dang sun to blend with the white. Apparently picture setting is the contrast. I’ll keep working on it. Thank you for you input and advice! Love the content , keep it up!

    • @That_Handle
      @That_Handle Рік тому +1

      Had no idea any CRT TVs came with digital over-the-air tuner in North America = Learn something everyday. I remember vividly how much better over the air digital TV looked over that of my cable box and that was a setup on a 27-inch Sony 4×3 Wega standard-definition through an extra shielded yellow composite cable from a set-top box I cherry-picked from RadioShack using the government rebate whereas you would have thought that the red, green, blue component Video Connection from the cable company's DVR tuner but presumably looked better but it was trailing far behind the composite delivered signal from that set-top box tuner and a good antenna - enough to watch the Olympics isn't the over-the-air tuner instead of via cable company.
      🤔 What tuning protocol was the tuner using at that point in the widescreen CRT here ?
      ...✋️ I'd vote to see a video upload of it tuning in digital over-the-air TV - especially curious to see what its channel program guide looks like on-screen, if it has it, and if future scheduled programs are navigable. To me, it's an interesting piece of home electronics history especially at such a confluence of various peaking established and emerging technologies.

    What's better and more rare 910 or 960? 🤔

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64  8 місяців тому +1

      So, they're very, very similar. Almost the same TV even. Both have the same amazing sound system with a subwoofer and the super fine pitch screen. The main difference I can see is that the 910 has a DVI port instead of HDMI. I don't have a 910 specifically, but I do have a Panasonic HD CRT with a DVI port instead of HDMI, and it's not a big deal. HDMI to DVI adapters are very easy to come by and I haven't had problems with it. The biggest inconvenience is that DVI doesn't carry audio, so you have to use RCA jacks for that, but that's definitely not a deal breaker.
      As far as rarity, I'm not sure, but if I had to guess, I would say probably the 960 since that particular model seems to be hyped up a bit more even though it's essentially the same TV.

    These TV's can't properly show movies. They lack 24 progressive playback. So the trailer you show either is played at 60Hz and has 2/3 pull up stutter, or it is showed at 50Hz, resulting in one double frame every second, both are highly annoying with panning objects and lots of action. Motion will look better with a progressive scan DVD player (one that calculates the missing lines to create a interpolated 480p or 576p image) as those are targeted at 50i or 60i TV's, but that is far from HD and less sharp then even budget plan Netflix 720p. So it can be fun to play around with such a humoungous piece of CRT tech for fun if you stumble upon one for free, these are not worth the going for second hand prices. A 1080p Pioneer or Panasonic plasma, which are sold for 20-30 bucks, is superior in every aspect.

    • @FairyKid64
      @FairyKid64  9 місяців тому +1

      Huh, that's interesting. I'll have to try setting a device to 24 fps output and see if I notice anything. So far I haven't noticed any hiccups in panning shots, but maybe that's either because I don't know what to look for or because the movie device already is doing a good job at converting 24 fps to 60 fps. 🤔

      @@FairyKid64 I'm curious what you get if you feed these true 24Hz. You could also try 48 Hz, that works for many computer LCD screens, that are designed for 60Hz, yet somehow most work from 48-60.

      @@2kBofFun a ubearable amount of flickering. 50hz is bad enough for my eyes. Some CRTs at the time had a digital techonology built in that either interpolated the 24hz of movies to 50/60hz. The best option is 72hz or 120hz, which i think some plasmas and OLEDs do.

      True. The biggest appeal of this TV in my opinion is that it has a very big widescreen tube. Secondary (although still impressive) is the sound system built in. The speakers are really nice. Also, 720p looks great on this thing.
