Haha!!! Thats an awesome story Joel, cant wait for more vids!!! I still can't believe I just happened to be there when you were demoing the unit let alone got to play pilotwings on it!! Even worse, my mum had just got back from Hong Kong and saw them for sale everywhere but didnt know what they were so instead bought me back some 20 in 1 cartridges for my NES (that never worked) and a disk drive for my C64. 😵😵

Great story Joel, looking forward to hear the next part. Super Nintendo is my all time favourite console and Super Mario World just blew me away. Super Castlevania IV has to be my fav game for the console, still get goosebumps when I hear some tracks from the game.

I used to import videogames from Honk Kong around 90-91 when i was around 15-16 years old. My dad imported a lot from Honk Kong back in the day through his company, so he often had these huge catalogues from different Wholesalers that sold electronics. I bought a lot of Megadrive and Famicom games back then, i even sold some machines and games to friends and family.

Just like you I was a massive Sega fan, I didn’t want to have anything to do with Nintendo until one day I walked into Andrews grey import store here in Brisbane and he had a Japanese Super Famicom with Super Mario World & F Zero. Super Mario World changed my view in Nintendo from that day on and I could wait to get my hands on the SNES when it was released here. Then playing Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past was amazing even to this day it’s one of my favourite games of all time. Loving story mode Joey, your bringing back so many memories for me

SUBSCRIBED.... I'm an 80s baby and watching some of your content was like a nostalgic trip down memory lane! Kids nowadays don't understand how magical the 80s and 90s were when it came to Video Gaming , being able to basically take home the Arcade experience and re- live it on your TV !!

Found memories of the NES. My first console. Still sits proudly in my house with everything I unwrapped at Christmas.
Got to love a bit of AC/DC, Brian Johnson was weirdly dating my friend's Mam for a bit as he's from my neck of the woods. Great video as usual, the movie clips at the start really just drove it home for me how much better the films were back then. Practical effects FTW.

Hey Joel yeah around that time I also got into the SNES - friend brought it over and got me hooked showing me "Super Mario World" and of course "Contra and my favorite SNES game "Super Castlevania IV" The music and the way all the games played was simply amazing. Till this Day - Super Nintendo has yet to top any of the Nintendo Systems!

Ahhhh.. the Super Nintendo. I loved my Genesis. But of course I got EGM magazine in the states.. and saw the announcement for the SNES and Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Who could resist the charm of Super Mario World? I was too young to work, totally reliant on my Mum. I begged for the SNES for my next birthday and got... an arcade stick for my Genesis. I never got a SNES. Sad story really.. It wasn't until years later that I swapped consoles with my friend for a few months that I really got to spend time with the SNES. Super Mario World, Pilotwings, F-Zero, Super G&G.. just amazing games.. some of my favorites to this day.

I never owned an Nintendo until last year, well, except a GameBoy. (which I loved, and still love) I remember the SNES came though, I did want one, and seeing all the commercials in some of the comics I read did not help. It was Mario World that looked so fun! One time we rented a SNES for a weekend, and it was very fun.
Back then I cannot remember so much Nintendo vs SEGA arguments, all the new stuff was just cool. In Europe we did not have any of those "Nintendont" commercials. Most people did not have many games either, since they were so expensive, except computer games though...

Back in the day I made a decision that still haunts me now, and it was getting a Game Gear for my birthday instead of the SNES. But my school had a terrible boiler which would always break in the winter and we would get sent home for a week or two. I loved being off school but even more, I loved that I would always go to my fiend's house and we would play F-Zero for hours.
It's cool that you demoing that game at Myer came full circle. Definitely a small world.

I was the opposite, a Nintendo fan boy having gotten the NES and SNES before jumping ship when my girlfriend got a job at SEGA Canada. I was able to get hardware at cost and she was allowed to sign out games from their in-house games library to bring home on weekends. It wasn't long before I got the SEGA CD attachment to go along with my Genesis.

Im born 1986. I got to experience NES and it didnt click with me that well, but SNES? It was the golden era of 2D and a beautiful goodbye letter before we left for 3D gaming with N64 and Ps1. I mean, for people who wasnt kids back in the 90´s... going from Super Mario World in 2D to Super Mario 64 in 3D is the biggest jump in gaming technology I ever seen in my 33 years alive on this planet. Here in Sweden we also had the pal SNES that looked like the japanese SNES... so that was great as well :) btw, Super Mario World today, even in 2019, is probably one of the best 2D platformer out there. Also the graphic, because of 2D, is timeless. It still looks beautiful 27 years later.

I too was, am, a SEGA fan.
I had the Megadrive, my mate up the road had the NES which I used to play but never had my own then.
I got the SNES months before it came out in the UK here, getting the US purple brick model... And then realising I had to get a new 14" telly to hook it up to!
Costly, you know that was birthday and Christmas combined that year.
But to have the SNES then was great, getting my US SNES import games and my Jap Megadrive import games from the same North London game specialist shop... Good times 👍

Great story. I love this series.
My Super Famicom came from Telegames, too. I didn’t buy it from there but the original owner did. I got it second hand in 1991, and the SNES hadn’t yet launched in the UK at that point. It seemed expensive at the time but compared to what you were paying it was really cheap; £280 for a boxed system with 10 games. I still have eight of them; only Actraiser and Ultraman have been sold from that original bunch. Many of the games you mentioned in the video are in the eight I still have but unfortunately Final Fight isn’t one of them. I think I’ll have to add that to the collection soon.
I also have that first copy of Mean Machines. It was a great mag and definitely one of my favourites. I’ve also got a couple of compilation magazines they published that had their best reviews in them. Watching this video has made me want to get them out of storage to have a read of them again.

Really great to hear a fellow Aussie perspective of this era. I grew up in an all-Sega town, and like you wouldn't touch Nintendo. Also like you, Mean Machines convinced me it was time to try out "the enemy". Funny how it's almost the reverse in the US on the Sega/Nintendo fandom front.

That's an amazing story Joel, I started off with Sega as well during the 16-Bit era, I had a Mega Drive and my best friend at the time had a SNES so I feel like I mostly got the best of both worlds, it wouldn't be until a good few years later that I'd buy a SNES of my own, working backwards from when I got an N64, that's probably when I got properly into game collecting and it was a lot cheapr to do in the Nineties compared to now. I remember Mean Machines as well! In our school library we had a Mean Machines catalogue containing loads of reviews, I used to read through that so many times over, so much so in fact that when it was time for them to get rid of some of the old books, I was allowed to keep it or purchase it at the time... one of the two, I still have it to this day.
Good timing with the Super Famicom video, you can now play a load of those games on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES or Super Famicom service, there are some great games on there too, sometimes though you just can't beat playing it from the original cartridge, it's still the best way to experience these games if you have the original hardware to do so.
I'm already looking forward to the next video, all the best. Sam.

The SNES is just undeniable... well, and the NES before it, well, and the Mega Drive two years before it, well, and the PC and Game Boy around the same time. But, you know what I mean. The SNES is crazy and ahead of its time in 1990-1992 (worldwide). So many games. So much power. So unified and utterly genius. So many buttons. So many series. So many Rare titles and creations. So much sound and colour. So much... Nintendo! (Still waiting for the 16-bit glory of GoldenEye on the SNES; though, not sad it was the N64, in the end. Not sad at all. My childhood right there. FPS is always best in 3D.)

Good on ya for eventually deciding to cut out the middle man and turning it into a profitable import business. I remember first seeing an ad for Super Nintendo in an American comic or magazine in 91 and being intrigued by it but had no way of looking up more information on it. I was preoccupied with super mario 3 at that time anyway. But then one day the landscape shifted overnight when the local Toy World replaced the demo NES unit with a demo SNES with super mario world and I was hooked. All plans to get a mega drive were abandoned and a Super Nintendo became the object of desire. Unfortunately for me at that time I was just a little kid so unable to get a part time job and having managed to convince my mum to get a second hand 8 bit console late in the game (a Sega master system when a NES was what I really wanted) the 16 bit era came at a bad time for me. I was behind the 8 ball in a major way. Unable to catch up on the 8 bit games that interested me on NES (master system just didn't do it for me) while being a bystander for all the glory of the 16 bit era it was a difficult but still memorable during my formative years. By the time I managed to convince my mum to get me another console it was the Nintendo 64. So I was to play catch up once more when I was able to get a part time job and managed to find a few cheap second hand SNES games including terranigma which I still have but that hunt was put on indefinite hold when I learned about emulation on pc and then became super busy with balancing tertiary study with part time work. Which is a shame as I also missed the best time to get those games on eBay before they prohibitively expensive. Nevertheless I managed to get back into collecting properly in 2015 and haven't looked back and have reshaped my collecting aesthetic to fit with the current landscape compared to when I last was a collector

Wow i also looked at that same magazine here in England and wanted the Super famicom, never had an interest in the NES. Lucky for me here in the UK i had no need for mail order as my city had loads of import shops. I saw the Super famicom in the shop window running Final fight and after a few months got one. Got it home, plugged it up via RGB scart and my 21" tv only supported the console in black and white. Had to go to the local tv store and get a new tv that supported colour NTSC over RGB scart. After that the Megadrive was still good but damn the new machine with mode 7 and it's sound was something else. I paid £50 for new Super famicom games and UK official Megadrive games were £40 so import games were not really much more.

Hey please no cliffhanger endings! Love the episode, though a bit short but very enjoyable indeed. Can't wait for the shop story, that is going to be really exciting.

I was the same. Wasn't interested in the SNES until I saw Super Ghouls and Ghosts and Mario All Stars (Having all 3 Mario games with updated graphics was a huge deal back then)

I was staunchly a Sega person until the late 90s when emulation was a thing and played Most SNES games on my Mac with snes9x. I did borrow my friends SNES for a weekend once. Only Mario world and Street Racer appealed to me (I though and kind of still think it’s better than the OG Mario Kart). The Mega Drive was still king. Sonic was my favourite platformer, Streets of Rage me favourite brawler, and Super Monaco GP my favourite racer and I thought RPGs were boring. Eventually we got Street Fighter 2, so that fixed a lot of things. Today I think both are great! You wouldn’t hear me say that 1995, when I thought both were crap compared to the PlayStation.
