St.Louis and University City were very dear to me. they had great public schools, nice cultural/intellectual/athletic offerings...good food. I live in and love San Francisco butI am very fond of my home town, dear old St. Louis.
Boy those were great days; wish I could go back. So much fun and lots to do and didn't have the crime like today. Sad it all changed. Thanks for the memories
Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way
Much love, and many years of fond memories (1957 through 2006). From Dallas Texas, I'll always treasure St. Louis as a GREAT hometown. Thanks for the reflections....
I've been to nearly every one of these places, the Avalon theater, both Ronnie's and 66 Drive Inns, mini golf at the Hilands, the Hilands Amusement park with their wooden roller coaster. I couldn't believe this had The Coral Courts Motel in it. Rented rooms by the hour. Commonly known as the motel-no tell... Been there a time or two also. Great memories of St. Louis, great video.
I worked at a steak and shake as a curb waiter in the late 70s My first and one of my favorite jobs. Left St. Louis for Phoenix 33 years ago. I’m glad I grew up in the Midwest. I miss it...
Funny I've been to or participated in 99% of the things on this list. However I don't remember a Henry's Hamburgers. One thing left out is the old Airway Drive-In with the iconic hula girl sign and the kids roller coaster. I didn't care back then what movie was playing I wanted to go for the roller coaster. Even though the drive-in is long gone the famous hula girl sign with the neon lights Still Remains. It was cool to drive past that drive-in at night with the neon lights flashing actually made the hula girls baton spin. What great memories. Thanks.
What a wonderful, well presented, compilation of photos. I've forwarded this on to friends and family. The video makes me both happy and sad all at once. Thanks for the wonderful memories!! :)
Wow! i remember Gaslight Square, i lived on McPherson and Sarah by the old St Louis Shade and hardware co on Sarah. That store just recently closed in 2016.
My first City of St. Louis was at the Kiel Auditorium From 1977 - 1979. I seen all type of concerts . Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson with his brothers in the Victory tour. The play “The Chorus Line” The Wiz troupe, I love that job. I start at $12.00 an hour and ended at $14.00. It was intermittent position. Great opera house as well. So many memories😂
BORN IN 1953 AND HAVING ALWAYS LIVED IN STL I remember almost all these places and seeing some are still here today. Grew up within close walking distance between the Southtown Famous, Avalon show, and Hampton Village. For me what is most missed is the Admiral. Sure made for a fun day or evening taking a trip down the Mississippi and back in the day or evening on a great ship. Remember trips on it from being a small kid playing in the arcades to dating there with my girl friend married now 45 years. I really enjoyed this video.
I don’t know where I got this and posted it long ago. Definitely brings back great memories. Even though I’ve lived in FL for 30+ years, I proudly claim to be from STL. ♥️
Me too many a Saturdays at the Avalon...when it's facade was black. Did 8 rs at Buder. Broke into Southtown long after it had closed...very spooky but well worth that final walk thru.
@@ramblingsadrift6477 I went to Buder as well moving to the neighborhood during first grade in 1960 and graduated in 1967. My best memories of Buder are all the sports played on the playground with neighborhood kids through my junior year in high school. I walked with friends to the Avalon some but it seemed when my family went to the movies we either drove to the Granada or one of the drive-ins.
Brings back memories for me. Though, some of it was from before my time. Born in 1961,raised in U. City, near Clayton, 20 years. I even remember the old trolley that ran up Pershing Ave. this could have been a little longer. Thanks for posting 🙂
brings back so many good good memories, Bill Sweeney drove a Mr Softee's Truck and Joan Sweeney won trophies at Teen Town, and Les Dodge, So many good memories, thanks for the memories
the old places I've been things I've seen brings back memories of my childhood the years went fast almost tears in my eyes when i think of the old southside famous barr avalon lots of other old places that are no more
I grew up around Downtown 'Saint' Louis 42 to 66, It was a wonderful place to grow -up. Fun times and an education you can't buy. There were 10 regular theaters and 2 Adult theaters within a 10 square area, and one penny arcade. Every type of personality you could ever meet in a very short time; what an education, it save me so many times. Through those years, Young children learned from, schools(?) TV, Movies, Computers, and Smart Phones. What a waste of time. Oh, one of the best places is the Juke joints, taverns, neighborhood bars, and Sunday Church Bingo. I don't know if more beer was served at Bars or at church bingos.
To really appreciate this you need to be pretty old I was born in 1950, and I think this little window into the past, well it is just wonderful. Anyone remember where Ronnies Drive-inn was? I have been there just don't remember where it was
Fortunately, a few of those places are still around---Crown Candy, Blueberry Hill, etc; I miss Gaslight Light, the real Italian pizza from Luigi's and Velvet Freeze especially the one at Gravois and Compton.
Bob C yeah my mother used to take me to Blueberry Hill in the Central West End in the University Loop I learn how to ice skate at Steinberg Skating Rink
Southside represent. 2841 Shenandoah Street. I don't live there anymore. Mister Softee was probably the best memory out of all those videos. Doesn't compare to those Bomb Pop ice cream popsicle type of trucks with the Bells. Mister Softee would go bong bong bong that's it.

Some great pictures! Thank you.
Sad that Red Bird Lanes was torn down to put up a Walgreens.
It makes me wonder what happened to the sign? It would have been cool if they kept it up.
The Parkmoor (Big Bend & Clayton) was also torn down for a Walgreens.
A beautiful little melody
Well done. Next time include Hall Street, the street racing Mecca of St. Louis in the wonderful Sixties and Alton Dragway.
To really appreciate this you need to be pretty old I was born in 1950, and I think this little window into the past, well it is just wonderful. Anyone remember where Ronnies Drive-inn was? I have been there just don't remember where it was
