The second loss remains one of the most disputed gold medal matches in history, with Karelin claiming he was unaware of a rule change. Remarkably, he didn't allow any of his opponents to score a single point against him for six years.
While Lopez is the second-best Greco-Roman wrestler of all time, Karelin's dominance remains unmatched. Karelin not only won every major competition for 13 consecutive years, but he also went six years without conceding a single point until the controversial gold medal match in Sydney.
What’s even more impressive is that Karelin maintained this level of dominance while competing in major international tournaments between the Olympics. During that period, he secured five world titles and an Olympic gold medal. In contrast, Lopez hasn’t competed at the World Championships in years and relied on Oscar Pino to qualify his weight class for him. The last time Lopez wrestled at the World Championships, he lost in the finals.
Lopez is undoubtedly an incredible wrestler, but I don't believe he ever reached the level of dominance that Karelin achieved, despite his five Olympic gold medals.
