I grew up with my mum and Grams telling me stories about Reade, Bonnie, and Grace O’Malley. Neither of them were much for the passive damsel in distress and wanted me and my sister to be daring, assertive, and strong. It worked. I love them both for that.
Thank you both for making these wonderful short programmes - so much to learn about so many fascinating people and presented in such a lovely way that you feel as though you're sitting with a lovely old friend who's popped round to brighten your day.
I love these brief episodes the way l used to love hearing the American Paul Harvey read his radio anecdotes ( As l understand it, they were in great part written by his wife!) which always concluded, “And now you know the rest of the story.” Yours, though, include a wider range of subjects and and a more uplifting, universal view. Please continue!!
The most famous Irish pirate was also a woman: Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley). She met Elizabeth I of England, negotiating in Latin, as that was their only common language.
I've been to Rockfleet Castle (Carraig an Chabhlaigh) in Wilford, Clew Bay, County Mayo which is most famously associated with Gráinne Mháille. The castle has also been speculated as her place of death. Not sure if that's true though interesting all the same. My parents used to live nearby too, just outside Newport, about 4 minutes drive away from the castle. Clew Bay is also very beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you ever get a chance.
@@seanpol9863 Just the one night there. The next day, we walked down Sheefy and over Mweelrea to camp on the beech. The whole area is gorgeous. Clew Bay is something special.
Sandi, I absolutely adore your channel! Big QI fan too. I love hearing about women's achievements and experiences from the past. UA-cam is such a great platform for it too as we're so often left out of the history books. And you're such an enjoyable presenter.
Thanks Sandi, Debbie, Alex - love to Mildred! great to see the changing seasons by your dress since you started Sandi! (also like us all, your hair getting longer!). great stories today, as always!
I almost (and it is small) hope the lockdown never ends! If you go back to normal busy life and these stop my life will be missing a very special thing. Thank you.
This has been my peace and sanity these last few weeks. To think of nicer things when the world is on fire has been a massive relief after all who doesn’t like pirates! Sandi will probably never realise how much good these gentle chats have done.
@Sandi T, thank you and the elves for fixing the captioning... tears of happiness in my eyes as I watch. It makes a huge difference to many, and I thank you for being kind.
I think these VoxTox could do very well as audio on NPR ( usa) they are almost the perfect length for a regular feature on one of the daily or weekly shows.
"Maybe I'll make the history books" They damn well BETTER put you on them Sandi. I don't know what a nerd riot looks like, exactly, but if they don't put you in I expect we'll find out.
De Mondragon seems indeed to have been laying siege to Zierikzee in May 1576. He had been there for almost a year and the city was almost completely out of food. The geuzen under William of Orange (ours, not the later one), tried to relieve the city a couple of times, including on the 27th of May and the 1st of June. They failed, and they failed again later. In July, the city had to surrender. You can read more about the siege on Wikipedia, in Dutch. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beleg_van_Zierikzee_(1575-1576)
Thanks again Sandi! ☮️❤️🌈 Calico Jack Rackham is possibly still remembered also because he was the inspiration for the character of Red Rackham in the Adventures of Tintin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Adventures_of_Tintin_characters#Red_Rackham Neither the albums nor the film mention the presence of Mary Read or Anne Bonny unfortunately among the crew. (I know, different time... though it was ok to have an all-male cast... and to have Tintin and Captain Haddock live together... 😜)
your pronunciation of many different languages is incredibly correct! how many languages have you at your command? brilliant you are! someday, there will be readers learning about your efforts to uplift a beleaguered world.
I just learned about Jaquette Delahuye who lived from @1640-@1660 in Haiti with 'hair as red as fire" thanks to Goodnight Stories of Rebel Girls. The book also shares the story of Grace O'Malley (see below.)
Having watched Vox Tox from the beginning, my wife and I have noticed the emergence and expansion of the end credits. As we've become fans of Mildred and her contribution to the opening and ending titles, we feel she's being neglected and unrecognized in those credits. We would suggest - inspired by the credit recently given to Alan Davies on QI - the credit of 'Puppy Supremo' for Mildred. Thank you, and cheers from Seattle!
Sandi. You are looking good. Your face is slimming down. Your “ pandemic silver lining”. Loving your series. Thank you for Friday night chuckle 🤭. Keep up the great work. From Australia 🇦🇺
Saying "be kind" as you lift up your sword, is a little passive aggressive, don't you think Sandi? hahahaha I love your stories about incredibly interesting women in history x
That's for the fairies who live in the bookcase. Sandi explained in one of the earlier videos but I can't remember which. However, watching them all would be a great way to spend some time.
Just discovered these videos. Quite delightful. (That's not QI it's QD) Thank you, Sandi, for your wit and wisdom. And then there's this little known woman pirate, in Canada. ua-cam.com/video/EyaUtUpdA7U/v-deo.html
I also want to say Grace O Malley. But also.. The subtitles are not what you say, so I can't use it for students learning English. The subtitles condense and correct. That is actually not helpful.
Unfortunately, for women, even fame doesn't necessarily lead to recognition for their achievements. Canadian actress Mary Pickford is a perfect example of this. All she is remembered for is looking cute in movies. Never mind that she founded United Artists Studio with Chaplin, Fairbanks and Griffith. Who cares that she was one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The important thing is that she was adorable.
I know you cheat at QI; however watching these shows has be thinking of changing my dinner party list. A starter might be Tomato-Asparagus Bisque. (Cooking the favour out of the tough ends.)

Well I'd follow Sandi into battle, aye matey! Wouldn't most people?
You've made our history book Sandi! Some of the best times of the past weeks have been spent with you and Debbie! We can't thank you enough! Bless
You’re the best Sandi! Thanks for helping us learn about the badass women of history 🖤 my inner adventurous child thrills to learn of kindred spirits!

How wonderful you are to share this with us. Thank you.
I have to say that love your weekly pieces and await eagerly every Friday to see what new delights are there. Keep up the good work and teach us more!
The most famous Irish pirate was also a woman: Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley). She met Elizabeth I of England, negotiating in Latin, as that was their only common language.
And she is the first one to stand up to Queen Elizabeth the first and get her to back down her being the Queen of England

you would love Zierikzee (I would say that as a Dutch person) - go and visit when the times allow again! Thank you for all those intriguing stories!
Absotively brilliant and a welcome relief from the news here in the States. Merci beaucoup.

Looks like Sandi has already conducted a raid on Milton Jones' closet.
hahahahahaha brilliant!

Read up on Grace O'Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connaught! She bargained with Elizabeth Tudor as an equal.
Loving these on a Fri Sandi. Keep up the great work xx
Love the story! Love the shirt!
Thank you.
Woo hoo! Glad to see you!!
Thanks for the subtitles😀
I love all your podcasts and delightful anecdotes!!
That shirt!!!!
As Zierikzee is not too far from Rotterdam, you are welcome to have your occasional pirate headquarters at our place😅☠
Thanks Sandi!
I’m supposedly descended from the only Manx pirate 😀😀

the minutes? really, I almost thought it was a teaser. just kidding.

Watch out, your fairies may fall for your pirate!

Argghhh...that be a good ‘n Cap’n! I be off to read ‘bout them there feisty women...

He's the production assistant that Sandi knitted. It's explained in one of the earlier Vox Tox videos.
