I was in the Camp Nou for a Champions league semi final a few years ago, BFC vs LFC , Messi had 4 Liverpool players running after him and like school kids, Virgil van Dyke included. He was 33. When he is on it, no defender can stop him, the second leg LFC put 5 players on him anytime he got the ball, fouled him too. This is the only thing that works, but that frees up other players.

    • @davit368

oh and who advanced to the final?
ofc best players get attention but its about the structure of the whole defending...
the 4 individual best defenders doesnt mean the defense on the pitch
the mls lacks coaching especially when it comes to playing off ball, it becomes more less a freestyle

I don't think that is even the problem... like... against Atlanta during the one of the postive phases that led to one of the goals there were 3 (out of 4, the 4th risked a red card) defenders that could have fouled Messi, taking that yellow card, but preventig the goal. Yet, none of the guys had the principles trained in, had too much respect.. and you know... a goal that should have never been scored was scored. It is an attitude problem. It is about accepting " that is good enough" - a kryptonite for football. If Messi can't punish this out of your soccer, who will?

They also do not want to injure him. As they also have an admiration for him, and Messi is not cocky like Cristiano Ronaldo.
I remember that someone fauled Backham when he came to MLS just because he wanted to greet him that way.
Messi has a lot of supporters in the USA. So not many of them are willing to tackle him hard to stop him, as they do not want to potentially injure him and basically become MLS villain for the rest of their careers.

LOL people have started watching football recently. So Messi's been scoring 40, 50 goals for a decade now, I never heard talks about defence being the problem then. Heck he scored 90+ goals in a season. Now that has to be some z tier defence or what ? It's what Messi does. He took more of a play maker role in PSG to assist Mbappe and Neymar...and people suddenly forgot he's a god tier goal scorer and MLS defece is getting "exposed".

  • @jordegales
    @jordegales 10 місяців тому +6

In the press conference the Atlanta coach explained that the strategy was to control the ball all the time which was discussed with the team earlier but the strategy did'ot work. Let's remember that during all these years the best coaches in the world have tried everything to stop Messi, normally putting personal marks on him, 2-3 players to prevent Messi from dribbling or shooting, but that creates problems bc they are players who cannot effectively cover their natural place on the field, this is taken advantage of by Messi's teammates, also we know that Lionel can escape from confined spaces and tight situations and make passes that move the team. I think Atlanta thought they could control the game without wasting all their fuel on Messi, but they were outclassed not only by Messi's skills, but Taylor and Messi well connected to each other, and busquet and Cremaschi well connected to assist them. Interesting times for MLS it will be forced to experiment with more strategies.

Atlanta defending in the 2nd Taylor goal was the worst. Its a 2 on 3 and Messi frankly had too much time to deliver that pass. Who are the defenders marking if they cant spot the run of other guy because they weren't even close to Messi either. Now maybe You dont want to get too close to Messi out of fear of being dribbled. Messi is a smart player. He knows danger and I suspect he manages it (very well). Getting to 36 year of age in this level of football says a lot. All he needs to do is draw enough players close enough. Then they are out of the play. Off load and let team mates have the space and finish the job. I agree that if you go rogue and try to take him out then it costs .. we've seen him deal with that in the past. Watching Messi in European competition it is a very 'tighter' game but he still managed to rise to the top. Let the debate continue :)

He will do it by punishing (way past his prime) space and time mistakes, forcing improvement. Messi in his prime, with the teams he played in, he / they was/were able to exploit 0.2/0.3 seconds worth of space. In MLS you have full seconds of space that are not even forced, riped to be exploited. I really hope that the deciders have their eyes wide open. I really hope USA gets to understand through this one in several generations transfers, some football. If you guys don't do it through Messi... well... RIP. Past his prime….he won the World Cup last year! He is 36 but Messi is not past his prime. He makes wiser choices on energy usage…

@@silviana4074Yes he is indeed past his prime, I watched fcb week in week out, he dont do crazy fast dribble anymore, but collectively his teamwork has gotten better because he's better captain and that really showed on last WC. Even with this moment he's still at top level.

U.S. soccer culture is like karate, it only works on other people that KNOW karate. lol
If you try to play like you have a brain in your head in u.s. soccer culture everyone on your own team will start yelling at you for doing it wrong, just like if you go into a karate dojo and start punching a black belt in the face. lol!
and absolutely no one knows anything at all about how to make a run. lol!

Lost art? Defense is not an art!!
    You get it all wrong!!!
Playing defense es like third world idea… you play to loose.
You must get the ball, and THEN you must know how to play DOMINANCE.
This discussion is so low level… a waste of time.
