  • Today I test one more "Electricity saving box", also called "Intelligent energy saver" or "Power factor saver". It comes from eBay for about 4 USD including shipping. Let's see what's inside this scam device. Let's also do some measurements and calculations.

Loved the straight forward electrical knowledge driven (including showing his work) debunk of these scam devices. No animosity or disgust driven commentary, just a demonstration of basic electronics.

      To be fair this one isnt fake, just misleading to people who are clueless. It pretty clearly says right on the package that it improves the power factor of inductive loads or noisy loads, which is what it actually does. If you dont have any of those loads, it obviously doesnt do anything, but technically its not fake. Some of those claim to be miracle devices that magically save power which is obviously scam, but I can accept something like this one.

      About that Láďa Hruška" - auto-translated from Czech Wikipedia:
      In 2012, he joined TV Nova , where he became a "food inspector" through the position of field correspondent. At the behest of the television management, a culinary experimenter was created over time, who tried to cook from cheap recipes directly within the news, which the audience began to send to the television at his request. Hruška promoted these recipes from cheap ingredients, sometimes considered food waste (leather [? - was it supposed to be "peels"?], etc.) as "cheap and tasty". [3] Almost immediately, a number of nutritionists and physicians began to be criticized for this. [4]

    The PCB marks show 2 transistors, 2 diodes, a resistor, a voltage regulator and a capacitor that goes nowhere. But the traces do not line up, so holes are between(!) traces on the other side. Quite sure this PCB is trash (printings and traces does not match at all) from a totally different device, but now used as a simple power indicator and they used some left-over resistors and a white LED. At least, this device is.. recycling at an interesting level.

      I’m guessing it has to do how specific meters operate in measuring power use in a household.
      In my household I’ve saved far more than I paid for it; I suppose I could open it up and see if it’s design differs from the one shown here.

    I asked an electrical engineer at work if the domestic mains meter we have in Malta measures VA or Watt. The answer was that it is a watt meter. This means that inductive or capacitive reactance is not measured and you are not paying for it. As you said in your video nearly all electrical appliances are now more capacitive reactive like inverter air conditioners, inverter fridges and freezers, TVs, CD players etc. These things usually even on standby power generate un-necessary current in the house wiring. SMPS tends to be more capacitive reactive if not having power factor correction.

    Looks like the PCB was repurposed from another application, by someone who didn't know what they were doing. The bodged diode was clearly to stop the LED from failing during the reverse cycle. If they had simply replaced the 100 ohm resistor closest to the LED with that diode, as marked on the PCB, it would have had the same result but in a different way, though the PCB marking may be the wrong polarity.

    It has beautiful pictures in the manual, maybe that's something you could test? :)

    What about your clothes washing machine, clothes drier, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, fridge, freezer, microwave, central heating pump, fan oven, induction hob, power tools (drill, saw, etc) bathroom fan, small appliances with iron core transformer (audio epuipment, bedside clock radio). They are all inductive loads with a transformer, a motor or both. You have more inductive loads than you think.

    • @petehiggins33
      @petehiggins33 3 роки тому +3

      But they're only inductive when they are switched on, 95% of the time the power factor corrector would be making the power factor worse.

    • @jms019
      @jms019 3 роки тому

      These are mostly small or not on much. Any house-wide power factor correction would have to adapt to the required compensation right now (if we were charged for reactive power which we’re not). Anything not so small should have its own PFC. (I am not au fait with the exact EU legislation.)

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 3 роки тому +1

      If you want to correct for inductive loads you should put the protection as close as possible to the inductive load, ie across its coil. This way the PF is corrected when the device is on but once you turn off the device you remove the overcompensation.
      And btw induction cookers should have good PF because they rectify mains and then send it to a high frequency inverter. They don't send mains directly to the coil. And tools with universal motors like vacuums, drills, and some saws will probably already be fairly good. Driers and heaters will also be good because the motor current (even if not compensated) is very low compared to that of the resistive element.
      A question I have for others here is what sort of current waveform do microwave ovens draw? The transformer will bias it inductive but the doubler circuit will bias it capacitive.

      Power factor, emissions and harmonics are different things though also the same thing depending on your point of view. Emissions is also about common mode stuff which is zero at the meter. I'll stop now.

    This device works something like a power-line frequency filter (stabilizes the power line network and reduces the so-called flicker effect - this is when two different electrical potentials pulsate and create more electrostatics on the electrical network in the house) - it's electrical waste that you do not need and appears be like noise or interference and this device eliminates what is good for your electrical devices like PC, Ham radio, TV, radio, etc.
    Also this device is good because it prevents electrostatic radiation on the human body.

    It looks like the resistor network is a voltage divider and current limiter for the LED. Are you sure the diode wasn't in series with the LED? They tend to be necessary as the breakdown reverse voltage of LEDs are quite low. That's why if you replace an LED in a Christmas light string and inadvertently put the replacement backwards, it doesn't light but the rest of the string does.

    • @pyromen321
      @pyromen321 3 роки тому +1

      I’ve seen antiparallel diodes for LEDs before in shitty electronics. They just clamp the voltage on the LED so it doesn’t go into reverse breakdown

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  3 роки тому +1

      It's really in antiparalell. It wastes power in the other halfcycle. Stupid solution of course. And yes, the 100k resistor is slowly getting darker :D.

Vyperu bez toho (mám wattmetr do zásuvky) a vyperu s tim.. stejný prádlo protože míň nebo víc prádla by měl vliv na finální výsledek takže vyperu stejný prádlo 2x.. jsem moc zvědavej co mi ukáže Wattmetr.. teď ještě zbejvá 1 věc.. prdnout do zásuvky wattmetr a do něj tuhle mršku nebo naopak???
