Ari loves playing celebratory and jolly music during horrible and disturbing imagery and I love it every time.

It’s funny how the endings to his films can be seen as either really tragic, or idyllic. I guess it depends on the lens of which party you’re viewing it through

Well, for both films the moment is jolly and celebratory. Just not for the main characters.
He also seems to love putting 70s pop hits over the end credits which I find tonally dissonant in the most hilarious of ways
When the whole community started to moan and vail in agony as the fire went up in flames, I suddenly understood, that as brutal and cruel as their customs seem to me, they are not doing this with vile intentions. They genuinely think this is the circle of life. They honestly believe this is right. They honestly feel for each other and do this out of a twisted perception of love. And that is horrifying.
Yes, there's no way they would murder people unless they thought it's beneficial for both the ingroup and outgroup, and a good thing to do. In all cultures, simple murder is forbidden. Killing people in the name of religion however is often (mostly historically) seen as perfectly OK.

The ending to both Midsommar and Hereditary felt like fairy tales, and the scores helped with that. It’s otherworldly.
The endings had a very similar feel to them (thematically).
SPOILERS AHEAD:
In Hereditary, Peter is embraced as the new demon king by the cult and praised by his followers. In Midsommar, Dani is embraced as the May Queen and she's welcomed as a new member of the Harga family. Ari Aster does such a great job of making endings both beautifully ethereal and horrifying at the same time. The soundtracks used for both endings also perfectly combine that feeling of beauty and terror.

@@TimeandMonotony Definitely not the only one, I love the idea that Hereditary and Midsommar take place in the same universe. In a lot of ways, these two movies feel like the beginning of an anthology about cults/paganism/demon worship. Since Hereditary established that things like Paimon, the devil, demons, etc. exist, this would mean that the Hargas could possibly be summoning another one of the kings of hell (or possibly queen in this case as Dani is female and Hereditary established that demonic entities desire a host of the same sex).
This could also explain Dani's maniacal behavior at the end too, she's becoming possessed by a demon or some other entity now that the sacrifices have been given. This is all speculation of course but I would love to see it pan out!

Honestly, the soundtrack was one of my favorite aspects of this movie. That and the first 15 minutes. What a set up. Aster literally had the audience in the palm of his hands after that start.

The first act was honestly my favorite part of the film
The prologue was SO GOOD. When the title came up through the window in the snow I was 150% in. The rest of the movie is still good but it never reached those heights again.

This movie was as mesmerizing as it was terrifying. I felt like I was in heaven and hell at the same time. Looking forward to its enchanting score.
That’s exactly how I felt. The visuals portray this feeling of being safe and secure while the music is somewhat unnerving to say the least.
I felt the same way!! My boyfriend and I both thought we were in heaven and hell and had never felt like that about a movie before.

8:15 is easily the most frightening part of the song because it feels like you've finally seen through the beautiful facade of what's in front of you and realizing the true horror you've gotten yourself into. As you struggle to get out of that situation, you've also realized that you're too late to do anything about it and have no choice but to be consumed by the most beautiful and horrifying thing you can imagine before the silence of death finally takes you away.
From the perspective of Dani, as the main character, you could say that at 8:15 Dani regains sobriety, as the drugs are wearing off her body and mind, and she briefly contemplates everything that just happened right then and the previous days. The end of this track reflects Dani now surrendering to insanity, now with no use for any drug...
This can also apply to Dani's sister at the beginning of the film.
Can we appreciate how genuinely beautiful this piece of music is even without the film
Feel free to cringe but I'd thought I'd share this here, it's a poem I wrote about the ending scene where this music plays whilst listening to this. I enjoy writing poetry and thought it was high time I wrote something about what's probably my favorite piece of film at the moment.
It was a horrific display of beauty,
The purity of flame, dancing around slats,
Round and round, faster and faster,
Colliding with smoky hues,
And crackling flesh.
The conflagration rose triumphantly,
Clothing the yellow temple,
Inside sat the lonely Christian,
Sewn inside ursine dress.
The flames took all, upwards in smoke,
The pain radiating out, mutual feelings,
Collective screams and convulsions
Shuddering against a dewy meadow.
She sat inside her floral cocoon,
Coming of age, a kind of phoenix,
Not partaking in the fire, but commanding it,
As it erased her past in carmine rage.
She didn’t scream as she was taken,
She didn’t cry as she became their queen,
The hopelessness of life had turned to ash,
Violence to order, insanity to clarity.
To witness the ending and begin anew,
Joy, previous absent flooded back,
A smile slowly grew, metamorphotic,
It filled her body, washed around in her eyes,
As the flames danced within.

That final wide shot of Dani stumbling with her long flower dress being dragged along the ground, her weeping as you can see the temple is engulfed in flames in the background. That was just a magnificent sight to see, pure art. BRAVO

The shot of Christian in the bear skin engulfed in flames with the others around him is something I'm never going to forget for the rest of my life. That's a haunting shot.
As for the shot with Dani, that's one of the most beautiful shots of the year.

This song is both beautiful and deeply unsettling. It reminds me of the song at the end of Hereditary. It sounds hopeful, like a rebirth of some kind. Dani is now part of a family that fully accepts her. And yet the dissonant strings in the background and that one low note let's on that what's happening is actually very wrong.
Funnily enough that track from Hereditary is titled, 'Reborn'.

Exactly! Same as what the film is about. It draws you into this beautifully enchanting landscape full of colors and sunlight. Yet there is something quite nefarious under the surface going on.
But then it starts going up and bright again, seems like the despair's part is done 😁😁😌
The final 10 minutes cemented this film as a masterpiece.
I couldn't properly process this ending until maybe 2 or 3 days after i'd seen it. I was just SHOCK when I left the theater. Wish I could see it for the first time again

I don’t always fully understand Aster’s films, however they never fail to transport me to a different world for a few hours. That was certainly an experience.

The whole sequence of the temple burning and Dani cathartically wailing and smiling covered in flowers was so powerful. It was the first time it felt like she had power over her overwhelming grief and psychological devastation. Truly one of the most emotionally stirring pieces of film I’ve ever seen. This score was transcendent

The whole piece is beautiful, but 5:42 makes my heart swell.
My Son plays both Cello as well as Bass with Bow, so the deeper tones are the parts that hit my tearducts.
I hope this doesn't sound too edgy or whatever, but I've been struggling with depression for years and it's gotten really bad lately. I've been thinking about doing something drastic, and this movie (especially the first 20 minutes) really drove home how devastated my family would be if I ever decided to check out early. I'd been trying not to think of how they would react, but this movie forced me to think about it. I don't know if my mom could get through it.

I feel you. If it wasn't for my mom and how lonely she is, as well as almost entirely dependent on me and my brother she is I think I might have checked out early years ago. It feels kinda unfair. I love her and she sacrifices a lot for me and my brother and I don't want to hurt her, but I also don't want to keep living. I pretty much have nothing to live for and literally no one would miss me, and that hurts a lot. I really jusy want to check out man.
Feel free to stone me, but I actually believe that Ari Aster is the BEST horror director I've ever seen, and if all his movies keep hitting it, he better go down in film history as the most important person for the genre! I have never seen anyone with such a clear passion towards horror, someone who won't use cheap jumpscares or scares for the sake of scares. These movies are 100% art. I was actually afraid before Midsommar. I was trying to find excuses not to go to the cinema, but I just couldn't not go, because I was so interested. Is there a bigger compliment to a horror director?

Some people on Twitter claimed that they overheard those types of discussions happening with random people leaving the theater
more than that he's the fill in for all the anger and vile hatred from feminazis toward men in general. He was told to mate with the girl then killed for doing it by a mentally unstable depressed crazy woman, sounds like most men's problems always being told to take a bite of that poison apple...in this case hallucinogenic fruits of death. If he never did the drugs he likely never would have engaged in the BS, so he was classically tempted by drugs, it was common in the middle ages for Europeans to be in a constant state of hallucination from hallucinogens added to the bread.....bread and circuses all the time, the Enlightenment is basically code for "better living through chemistry". Drugs are a bane today. They weaken and lower impusles and lower thinking mentality to that of animal spirits, maybe we need more of that but in a sober manner, sober animalistic hatred of people that hate my kind, the drugs don't work for me, the booze doesn't work for me, a good decent cleansing of war....saving the planet by extinguishing ourselves seems like old time European values to me. I came away from this film wishing and wanting to make a similar horror film like it but about all the other assholes on this planet, jews, asians, blacks, christians and muslims, just do the same a horror style setup like this one was done on White Europeans, what's good for the goose is good for the gander....

I love how Ari Aster plays with the ''disneyish'' imagery and soundtrack to lure us into the most horrible thing that is happening in front of us, it makes all of this insanely brilliant
As soon as this film cut to black after the final shot I realized if my jaw dropped any lower it would be in my popcorn on my lap, i also realized i hadn't blinked once for about the last 20 minutes. I was so immersed in the film; the cinematography, sound design and editing were soooo fucking good in this movie, and also amazing acting of course, so for that 2 and a half hours i felt like i was in another world. I feel as if I'm the minority here because a lot of people seem to like hereditary more than midsommar but imma go on record and say I admired this film more than hereditary, not that it was better, Im not sure which one is better, but i dont think ive ever left a film feeling the way i did after watching midsommar. Ari Aster, you are a gift to the TRUE horror fans of this planet.... Oh and HAIL PAIMON
I think this film bbbbbbuuuuuuries Hereditary. Dont get me wrong I liked Hereditary but this movie had such memorizing scenes(at least to me). Like the carriage scene with the girls seemed so regal yet messed up. The flower dress looks so bizarre. Florence Pughs was sooooooo great in this movie too.

The whirl of emotions on Dani’s face and then that smirk at the end while she watched her boyfriend burn was extremely disturbing.
I think it was more that she was able to finally release her emotional anxiety and just feel joy for once. She has found a new family/existence albeit by default (and by way of some ridiculously powerful psychedelics).

I had a death in the family when I saw this film. The finale and this score helped release all these emotions I've had about the loss. Florence Pugh in this film was absolutely fantastic. I felt every emotion from her grief, despair, anger, and finally contentment/acceptance of her loss
This movie helped me overcome my constant anxieties of losing my family and overcome past losses. This movie captures emotions so well.

I saw this film and its ending as a pretty succinct depiction of how cults operate, as well as how toxic relationships form.
*spoilers
Of course the film is a happy ending for Dani. People who are inducted into cults are not satisfied people who are happy with their lives. Cults target vulnerable and broken individuals and offer them something better. All the other characters in the film wouldn't make good cult members: Christian and Mark are committed to themselves, Josh is committed to his studies, and Connie and Simon are committed to each other. Dani is the most vulnerable one because she hasn't fully committed to anything, and thus, is the most susceptible to joining the cult. The ending makes the audience feel the same way Dani does. We can't help but feel a degree of satisfaction seeing the douchey boyfriend finally get his comeuppance, and the uplifting music and her smile directly conflict the horrors of what are happening onscreen. But at the same time, Dani is essentially throwing away one toxic relationship for another. In the same way Christian convinces Dani to suppress her emotions and "acclimate" to his needs for the good of their relationship, the cult convinces Dani to perform acts of violence and acclimate to their customs for the good of the "family". Remember that when the elders kill themselves on the cliff, Dani is by far the most disturbed within her group of friends, and yet by taking advantage of her vulnerability, the cult has convinced Dani to not only accept, but partake in these very same acts.
This is a very good description. I was hoping the movie was just being allegorical in getting rid of toxic relationships or the toxic things in life so that you can finally move on...but I think you're more right. =)

There's a great deal I agree with here in interpretation, however-
When the ättestupa occurs, yes Dani is shocked like everyone. But (and I'm about to see the director's cut this weekend, and so I've seen it only twice as of now) after the woman's death, Dani became serene when everyone else continued to react adversely. I feel like this showed how willing she was to accept the cult, as much of her trauma is feminine in a sense and it was the women who recognized her grief/sadness/anguish (especially at the end before the Fire Temple burning where everyone was mirroring Dani)
Consider this, her sister and mother dying are given more significance (the slow zoom in cross cutting Dani and the woman about to leap off the cliff). It's her mother and sister she sees when she's tripping throughout the film. Her father is rather absent. And so when Christian (huh huh huh!) being the masculine and inhibiting part of her life finally betrays her (yes, he too is tripping but he finally acted resolutely and it was only when he was high as balls) she finally dispenses and feels the relief. It's not without reason that comparisons to Carrie, The Wickerman, The Devils are made, it's no simple film; and in my estimation: a masterpiece.

P.S. For those who've seen it 2x+, was it just me or when Dani left the voicemail for her parents, if you listen carefully, very low volume, there's the sound of the gas beginning to fill the room?

A lot of people didn’t like this film. I, however thought it was the best psychological thriller this year. I was so immersed in this film. The twisted story and the mood I got was genuinely scary. But it was also very beautiful.

Ive seen this movie twice already. I couldn't process it fully in that first viewing, but I knew what I witnessed arrested me on multiple levels. After dwelling on it for a few days I decided to go out and watch it again. That's when I saw the vision fuller, and by the time this scene arrived I was in tears. I had to clench my teeth and grip the arm rests of the theatre chair to keep from screaming out with Dani (Florence Pugh.) It just wrecked me.
I personally find this piece to be more emotionally jarring than “Reborn” at the end of Hereditary, and overall far superior. This piece is a master work, as is the movie.
If you asked me, I would say both pieces are equally powerful.
Different movies with different stories. The ending of Midsommar is more memorable and emotionally impactful for me though. It was a huge emotional release.

It was the exact opposite for me. I've been reading reviews and youtube comments about how people reacted and when I finally went to the film I would start getting nervous and then be like "oh, that wasn't that bad." It has its gore, but not much different gore wise from other movies I have watched.

3:07-4:16 is the most incredible section of a horror movie score I've ever heard
After the ending, everyone in the theater kind of looked at each other on the way out. I kept meeting eyes with people unintentionally and for a brief second we kind of shared this "we've seen some shit, man" expression. Hard to not feel horrified in a deeply unsettling way after such a beautiful score played over such devastating imagery.

Christian and his friends (and probably just society) never made Dani feel like it was OK to release her emotions. The cult takes it to the other extreme and releases their emotion almost violently and immediately. She found her home. Genius.

The ending to midsommar was kinda emotional haha I just felt all the pain & suffering Dani was dealing with, along with beautiful shots with this phenomenal music! Ari Aster just knows how to make an ending so jaw dropping
With its lavish music, beautiful cinematography and disturbing sequences, Midsommar is unlike any horror film I’ve seen. Ari Aster is a genius!
Not spoiling anything, but Aster is the best at giving his horror movies unconventionally happy endings. This piece really elevated the final moments. Thanks Bobby!

After listening to this over 50 times the last couple of months, I still can not understand how someone can create such a masterpiece that's both creepy and cheerful, depressive and uplifting, hopeful and destructive, dark and bright and everything else mixed in together. Brilliant! Just brilliant!
Never have I ever so wonderfully straddled the line between awe of pure beauty, and existential terror. This movie did an incredible job, and has opened my eyes to a strange new form of art
My second favorite song in the movie is out now with the release of the soundtrack. It's "The House That Hårga Built" and it's playing when Dani is taking in her first piece of artwork at the commune. It's outdoors and camera pans across this long scroll of various figures and vignettes that is strange and beautiful but not quite ominous yet, like the art in the place they sleep.

god this movie was such a masterpiece- genuinely a work of art
something that i always loved about this scene, even though it was so small, was how the old man was teaching the younger members of the Harga how to disembowel the bear. this wasn’t some horrible pagan ritual for them, this was an expression of culture that connected all of these people and that’s how - at the end - Dani comes to see it.
Someone in another video pointed out something. The Fire Temple is in the shape of an "A", which is the initial of Dani's last name "Ardor." So as this "A" burns, the last ties to her old family are destroyed and she is ready---and willing----to be embraced by her new one. At least until she's 72 and she has to jump off a cliff. (I also don't think it's a coincidence that Ari Aster's first and last name begins with an "A.")
Edward J. Cunningham perhaps from a feminist theory standpoint, we could see the temple shape as an inverted V; along with the heavy floral -symbol of fertility- imagery and flame motif -symbol of rebirth and the womb- we could see the ending as the triumph of Dani’s identity as a woman over the oppression of her male circle of friends. The power held by the women in the film is undeniable, from the teenage seductress, the role of may queen, and the head cultist announcing the sacrifices and matches.

I like how near the end it gets a little distorted and offtune , almost like this the point where Dani is breaking, but then it picks right back. Like she finally achieves some peace in her turning insane.
Beautiful and Sinister at the same time. Such a masterpiece.

I've literally just watched the film twice in a row. The first time my mind was blown and I had to see it again. Second time I noticed lots of clues throughout the film, such as the painting at the very start of the film. Amazing

D. says she wants to get out, she explains it' s necessary to flee this dangerous place but Christian does not want to hear anything (because he wants to finish his thesis) . After that they discuss their relationship and she comprehends the condition of it, or she expresses what she already was sensing. iN the end she shoots "You leave me here ? ! sHE is unable to split up with a relationship,unable to act on her own. I'm not in the absolute bashing towards Christian, they are so mirroring each other. And actually she will remain here. If she frees herself in the end it is as much from her own failures and impossibilities as from the bad boy friend and the coldness of modern society.

This was so powerful during the movie but when you isolate it, it is beautiful.
i just love how both endings of Hereditary and Midsommar have a fitting ending score that is triumphant. SPOILERS FOR BOTH FILMS: in Hereditary, it represents the triumph of Paimon finally being free to do his havoc on Earth and the cult’s success in correcting Paimon’s body. In Midsommar, it represents the triumph of Dani finding people she can depend on and getting rid of the toxic relationship that was holding her back from fully healing.
Does she really heal though? It’s more likely that she learned to indulge in her grief and enjoy spreading her pain to the other cult members through their emotion-based language.

The Sinister Void I think the central theme of the film is the nature of empathy, and how too little of it but also too much of it are both damaging. Christian lacks empathy for Dani at the start which is what sets the plot in motion, while the cult on the other hand have an entire language based on affective empathy regardless of why the person is feeling the way they do. This can be dangerous as it requires the person to wallow in strong emotions thoughtlessly and can lead to mentally unstable behavior akin to Bipolar Disorder (which is what Dani’s sister had. Perhaps Dani ends up just like her at the end.)
If the film has a message I would suggest it’s about the dangers of extremes, and how suffering under one extreme would lead one to the other extreme without moderation. Perhaps Dani’s smile at the end doesn’t so much represent her being free of her unsympathetic boyfriend as much as it is her freeing herself from emotional consistency and healthy regulation.
@@esyphillis101 No I disagree, I think through her bitter sweet revenenge. She finds solace and peace. Right or wrong, she screams and purges her pain and buried evil. Out. She can finally start again.
I think a further theme this score propagates is one of bitter-sweetness. At the end, the friend and his brother are given some Yew tree extract to stop them from feeling pain; yet we witness one of the brothers scream as the flames engulf him essentially proving all of the rituals to be a facade. The sadness is furthered by the fact that nobody ever finds out the Yew tree extract does not work which is a microcosm for all of their rituals.

I love how this sounds like it's saying, "And then they lived happily ever after" but it's not really happily ever after. Not a lot of music has that expression and it's very well done here.
This song, alone, along side the scene that intertwined everything together.. people say it was lacking, but the folklore, the reality and imagery of a theme like this makes the movie far more terrifying than Hereditary to me.
This movie is a chain of events that allow you to easily walk down the thin line between happiness and suffering in the same breath and weigh you down with both, for you to never choose a side, to accept both fates at the same time.
Midsommar's entirety was both the celebration of new life and birth of a healthy commune as well as death and feterlization for the earth, and it's environment and community. All the while being accepted as a way of life. Let it sink in.. this wasn't a very long time ago where traditions this morbid were being practiced. Some could say this is History.

Imo there's some dark comedy in it as well. Her sour face as he burns, and his expression of "I give up". Really an extremely dark comedy take on a breakup.

I can appreciate any movie that can evoke a strong emotional response. It's rare that I'll ever think about a film weeks after seeing it. Midsommar is truly a piece of art
I finish watching Midsommar and man it was insanely terrifying. That Music is just amazing.
Such a great OST, this movie was spectacular.
The wailing and screeching violins toward the end of the composition is an excellent touch.
Something about the way Christian couldn't move as he burned was oddly serene, like you know that must have hurt, but the way the music swells and he is engulfed silently...what a headfuck.

When Dani finally smiles at the end, it's like the most genuinely happy smile I've ever seen in a movie... and it feels good to see! This movie was brilliant and I loved it.

I have rarely watched a film where the music synced up so perfectly to the aura of the film; absolutely horrifying but beautiful at the EXACT same time. It literally gave me a feeling i've never had before.
This scene gave me the WEIRDEST feelings. On one hand the music made it feel as though something happy and beautiful was happening, but also sad and solemn. And on the other hand it completely disturbed me. Jesus.
I've seen that many people disliked Midsommar, and for some it was boring and slow. But I'm happy to see so much love for it in this comment section. I LOVED Midsommar, it was instantly in my top Horror films of all time. It made me felt several things, and I loved the construction of the story and every second of tension. This final sequence was incredible, and one of the best endings in horror films for me. Amazing movie and experience.

This damn track.. fucking hell man. Bounces from beautiful, to sadness, haunting, horrifying and back to happy all at once. I've had it on repeat. This movie was by far the most interesting thing I've seen since Matrys .

the last 2 and a half minutes are the scariest. it sounds like the resolution to an epic Disney film. happy!

And nobody says anything about the fact that they didn't just put Christian into a bear skin. Like a costume. No. They actually cut of his legs to make him fit. You can see them do it, they use a wire saw but cut the scene away just when they start. He's feeling and witnessing all this, but can't react to the pain. So he sits there. With his limbs cut off, in a hollowed out bloody squishy bear. Slowly burnt alive.
