    I live in my car in alaska and use about that much propane too with a small burner. 12 volt stuff sounds interesting

    How about putting the fridge outside for the winter?

  • @mainelyelectric

    Using the rubber hose for the high pressure are you having the oil issue clogging regulators or appliances? Its the plasticizer in the rubber oozing out in to the hose.

    • @solarcabin
      @solarcabin  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't had a problem with the hoses but if you can do copper pipes it would be better.

    Are those neoprene hoses suitable for outdoors, Can they withstand cold temperatures and snow?

    • @solarcabin
      @solarcabin  3 роки тому

      They are same hoses used on RVs and no problems with mine in 15 years. I have mine protected on the porch from extreme heat and cold.

    You can get custom lengths at a propane dealer or set lengths at most home suppliers. Look in the barbecue supplies stores.

  • @solarcabin

    yes you can dump the extra power to a hot water heater or other appliance.

    Are the large tanks a must ? I been off grid 3yrs and this year has been the hardest 20lb tanks are freezing up

    • @solarcabin
      @solarcabin  3 роки тому

      I keep my tanks in the solarium porch in winter to stay warmer and no frozen valves. You can get a larger tank and have propane delivered some places.

  • @solarcabin
    @solarcabin  12 років тому

    Look at the Sundanzer models for ideas. They are very efficeint but a little pricey. I use an energy star apartment fridge run off an inverter and it works well.

  • @solarcabin
    @solarcabin  12 років тому

    Well, you can use wood heat or maybe you could put the propane tanks inside a small insulated shed surrounded by straw ?

    how much is the 12v frig an ware did u get it ?

  • @solarcabin
    @solarcabin  12 років тому

    Well it depends on if you have free wood available or have to buy it. I like both and have both because I don't like getting up in the middle of the night to reload a wood stove.

    oh really. the apartment unit, fridge and freezer? how many watts does it consume on average? you can also get RV units that run on both 12v and Propane this way you can use solar when there is enough and propane when there is not enough. ALSO consider and outdoor freezer for the winter months. no power at all.

    I like the on-demand water heaters - have one in my home. If you have a solar water heater I think you can reduce the use of your propane on-demand, but it allows you to take a good shower or get some hot water in case the sun is not shining. Thanks for the video and the inspiration!

    we used a diesel drip for heating- I had an agreement with two friends who had small auto-repair garages- they would give me the gunk oil from oil changes and I would run the gunk oil through a filter (twice) to get rid of "chunks and globs" then I would add just a touch of keroscene to thin it a bit... you'd be very surprised how long thirty gallons of old oil would take to burn... I love off grid and free stuff!

    I use a Norcold 12v fridge at my off grid camp. It draws about 2.6 amps, only when it cycles as it is a true fridge. The 12v cooler draws over 4 amps continuously. So I would say the fridge uses about 60% of the power the cooler would use, about 60% of the time.

    I always love your videos LaMar. Have you looked into a bio-digester? Basically, it's a system that integrates anaerobic composting of organic material, (such as wood chips), with fueling a home using the resulting methane. A Frenchman by the name of Jean Pain pioneered some of this, (there are videos of his stuff on youtube,) and he heated an average sized household on a few acres of selectively cleared wood all year round, on top of water heating, cooking, etc. Plus, fertilizer aplenty.

    The 12 Volt Refrigerator uses the heat system not a compressor for chilling the inside of the refrigerator and that system is not very efficient. a 120 Volt AC refrigerator is much more efficient and even using an inverter is better than using a 12 Volt DC unit. Far better is using a top opening deep freeze running at 120 Volt AC off an inverter but they only run less than 5 minutes per hour. There are several you-tube presentations on the modifications. (One explains adjusting the original thermostat up to 38 degrees) for keeping food without freezing it. My next fridge will be top opening, saves about $200 yearly and that pays for a new freezer the first year.
