My sister and I lost our Mom at 11 & 12. (just before puberty). Our father did his best, but at the time we didn't discuss "girl" things with him. So my older sister took our Mothers bras and altered them for us. It was genius! It gave us time to get up the nerve to discuss our growing up needs with our old fashioned dad (From this point He even bought our feminine products when he did the grocery shopping.., which must have been a tad hard for him..I cant even imagine him doing that.. I'm trying to make my own bra at the moment, adapted from my basic bodice block. I'm mostly bedbound (ME and POTS), and finding something comfortable is very difficult. Sports bras don't work for my bigger ladies, elastic underbands keep cutting upward, underwire is evil. Wish me luck!
Try Pin-up Girls Ingrid. Front or back close, no wires. My daughter-in-law is a 32L. It took a few tries to get it right, because of the shape of her breasts, but now it’s super simple.
Hi, not that you asked for this input but I had POTS and ultra-high doses of injected methylcobalamin (an easily absorbable form of B12) made my POTS symptoms disappear. My B12 level was normal, so it was a surprise that this helped so much.
Wow; I had no idea you could even make your own bra! I have a small ribcage and full, lopsided breasts, so finding a bra to actually fit me has been a challenge over the years. Now that I'm older, I'm dealing with some arthritis issues, and it would be wonderful to have a front closure with no underwire and soft straps that don't leave dents in my body! Give it a try, just be patient until you get the fit correct but long-term you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I share your OA issues along with a problem rotator cuff which will most likely need surgery, so it's time to make a few front closing bras to make getting dressed less painful.
I can vouch for making your own bras - I had never found a bra that fit and was comfortable (and affordable!) until I started making my own. I'm very small-boned but have a lot of tissue, and a semi-OK fitting bra meant specialty stores and prices above $100. When I started on my making journey, I could buy beautiful fabric and lace and all the fittings - elastics, closures, clasps, thread, etc. - for a third of that andin more quality, colors. Also I've found that Bra Makers is a great source, and if you're in the US, Gigi's is the source so you don't have to pay duty to have things shipped from Canada. I will never go back to store-bought bras! YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Totally agree and have been making my own bras for so many years I don't even think about store-bought bras these days. By coincidence, next week or so I'm planning on another bra making session after I finish some jeans...usually I make 4-6 at a time, it's so much quicker to do a production run and more rewarding at the end.

Lately, I have been strongly considering making my own bras because I have permanent(?) indents where the straps have rested on my shoulders day after day for years holding up my generous 'boobage'** and because nothing ever fits me right . I'm also strongly considering making a corset instead of a regular bra; it just seems like it would hold them up much better with less pain. Underwire. I'm getting to the point where I'm liking it less and less. If it weren't for the fact that large breasts left hanging will drag the front of your neck down, I'd go without a bra for the rest of my life! But I'm too vain for that. I don't want a turkey neck just because I hate bras. (If you're wondering what I'm talking about and you have generous 'boobage' like me, test it for yourself. When you take off your bra at night, bend your head back as far as you can (like you're looking straight up at the ceiling) until the skin on your neck feels strained, then lift your 'boobage' with your arms. You'll notice the 'pull' on the skin on the front of your neck either lessens or goes away entirely when you lift the sisters. That's why I wear a bra to bed now; I don't want them pulling on my neck night after night until my neck looks like a turkey's. It'll look bad enough soon enough already. I don't want to help it along!) **(boobage is pronounced with the kind of 'zh' sound for the 'g', like in 'garage'.) :-)

Bras have been the bane of my existence. I am a-symmetrical, so one side is larger than the other. I also have a spinal issue which has caused a severe curving and twisting, so bras cause me great pain, mainly because they cut off my circulation and cause me to “blow” up. I have considered making my own for the simple reason that I could make it to fit me. I have just felt so intimidated by it, however, that I never have. Now you have me thinking about it once more. 😁
You should do it! I've been making my own bras for years because there is no such thing as a store bought bra that fits me. It's not as hard as you think, and it's actually life changing. Just make a mock up and be prepared for several iterations of it if you are shaped very differently than store bought bras. You will get there, though, and it will be worth it. 😊
Go for it! I’m slightly asymmetrical as well and store-bought is always too big on one side and too small on the other. I’m working on sewing my bra and I’m super happy with it so far!

My current plan is to try hacking the bras I do have. Taking the parts I do like and combining them into one bra. They probably won't be pretty but they will hopefully fit.
This would be great for ladies who have had breast surgery for cancer and other issues. Bras were very painful for me for a long time until I finally got a lounge bra and it didn't hurt as much.
I have that problem and costochondritis into the bargain. Weary of buying overpriced bras that are uncomfortable or downright agonising to wear.... I have drawers full but feel that spending on clothes is futile because cancer and the butchering we have to succumb to has affected my whole body and my mental health. I would love to make my own bra but I am not very tech minded and though I love to handsew I haven't any dressmaking skills.
I'm unnaturally overweight but not obese and have acid reflux. I was told that I developed sleep apnea as a result of sleeping in a reclining position due to my reflux. Someone advised me to begin sleeping in a bustier rather than having a dangerous stomach surgery and surviving on a CPAP machine. Well, I tried it, and IT WORKED!!! Instantly! Now I just wear a bustier to bed. No surprises, no apnea, and no surgery.

This is such an informative video! I am a 38H and I have struggled with bras for years. To get one that fits properly is well over $200 in Calgary, Alberta! I'm retired so this is a ridiculous expense. Time to dust off my sewing machine and give it a go! Thank you!
I recommend tracing the pattern on tracing paper instead of cutting out the original. You might have to try a few different combinations to get a perfect fit.
Thanks for the inspiration! It used to be such an ordeal to try on bras for hours, with ridiculous results, only to have to finally “fudge” the fit actually. Also to use bra extenders. Not to mention the big problem that the department stores no longer exist! Sports bras fit okay, but are difficult to pull on over damp skin after a shower. So no more whining! I love the idea of a separating zipper in the front.
I’m currently making my first bra! I’m making a 18th century short stay, but adding padding that’s sold at stores to give me more support and shape as I am not very busty. I’m also using normal bra closure instead of the eyelets in the back. I’m also making the strap longer and not tied together with lace in the front. I’m so sick of my store bought bras because the straps are always falling down, but if I make it any tighter the straps stay up, but then the actual bra bunches up. I can’t wait to finish my short stay! I wanna make more modern bras too using your tips and I will look at the options from the website you listed. I agree that it is very empowering to feel self reliant from purchasing store bought clothes. We do still have to buy the fabric, but it is so cool to have pieces made just for us and our measurements. I have a tiny waist and skirts never fit me at the waist as I like and instead sit on my hips. I am striving towards a handmade wardrobe just like you. The problem is that most of the projects I do aren’t very wearable as I’m so drawn to historical fashion.
honestly i will look into this. my ideal bra would be a bralette style, lace in material, a thicker lace band and thinner straps. im quite fussy with my bras but find that the style i want doesn't work for my DD's/E's. i only like lace bralettes because i wear pretty skimpy outfits and like to have my bra almost blend in/become part of my outfit. most store bought bras above a D cup are so full coverage and super bulky, it literally makes me look like the letter "P"
I can’t comprehend why bigger bras have so much padding!! It doesn’t make them more comfortable and I’ve never met anyone with a large bust that wants them to look even bigger

@@bellemusecore the course I took was at a Bernina dealer/habby shop. The owner split the soft underware and shape ware into two separate courses. Apparently they don't do the course anymore due to lack of interest.
Saaame. I have Never been satisfied with any bra I've tried, with the exception of one nearly all wool bra. The straps always wear out and fall off my shoulders. never been much of a seamstress, but perhaps I will have to put the time into making one 😊

This is on my to-do list because mastectomy bras are crap. They're usually quite matronly and the ones that aren't are ridiculously expensive. Not only that, but they are impossible to find in stores near me. Regular bras, for anyone unaware, DO NOT FIT reconstructed "breasts." Reconstructed are a completely different shape no matter how realistic they look and thus will just never fit a traditional bra. I'm wearing Coobies in the meantime. Highly recommend if you're at a loss and just need SOMETHING to tide you over. Oh, and PSA: I never thought I'd have BC, let alone BC before 30. Ladies, BC is NOT just lumps!!!!
Since early in my first pregnancy 4.5 years ago, I haven't been able to wear the underbust part of a bra for more than an hour. I am on the large side, overweight with smaller girls relative to my weight, but they hang low - lots of nursing! Finding shirts, dresses, outfits that look acceptable to society has been difficult to say the least, and I'm unsure of even how to make my own bras, since they all appear to squeeze under the bust in order to give that sought after support. it's all well and good to go braless when you're an a cup, but with pronounced nipps that line up with my elbows, I'm in a quandary.. I see that Katherine has a free vintage pattern that, if done in a heavier knit, may give me what i need. So far wearing xs tanks has been my only solution..
I made a bra several years ago following Beverley's online Craftsy course. I loved it but never got around to making more bras. Now I am older and find bra buying a most unsatisfying task. I asked for a fitting in one upmarket store here in UK and was treated with such derision and the woman tried to sell me bras which were definitely not my size. Maybe she was having a very bad day as I have had fittings in that store before and the service and fit was perfect. Anyway, that was what made me realise I need to make my own again. I have ordered some kits in pretty fabrics as I already have the patterns I used before. Thank you for this video. Your disussion has helped me a lot. I"m 78. I've never EVER had a bra that fit. Underwires seem to come only in small so they dig in. I cut them out right away. No better fit but not painful. Bands roll up like rope. Straps dig. I wear bras for bounce control when I am out of the house, but love winter when I can wear extra layers and do without. Measure systems show D to G..waht? Store fitters have no clue, so I end up trying on 30 and walking out. I wear them till they are shreds and go on another disappointing hunt. I've sewn documented costuming for 4 centuries. 18C wedding parties ...chemise, stays and gowns, military uniforms, woven the cloth, made the braid, woven tartan socks and wrote the book so distant actors can make their own from my cloth. I've grown the linen, spun the yarn, made the lace. But can't cobble up a modern bra for myself. Looks like KIT is the way to go. ..didn't know there were such things ))) Yahooo !!!! There is hope yet )))
Nice video, that's a topic I struggle a lot. But when it comes to the reasons why to make your own bras I think you missed a very importan point. Every item you make yourself is one thing a that doesn't come from the modern slavery system. To me that's a very important point!

I've made corsets in the past but never thought about making bra's. I used to be very blessed in the chest department, major weight loss/ill health has left me deflated. Nothing I buy fits well anymore, so the answer is clear and I need to put down my crochet hook and plug in my machine!

I need to do this. Mine have always been lopsided. When I was breastfeeding my oldest child, one side just stopped making milk one day but I was able to continue to nurse on the other side for another year. After nursing five more babies, it's even more exaggerated. There is literally no bra in the world made for me. Sorry to ramble and go TMI, but thank you for the tips!
I have a wonky shape, but I was able to grade together the vertical measurements from one size with horizontal measurements from another size, then make a few iterations of customization off of that to get a really well fitting bra. I had an unfortunate life event and never finished my second one, I need to buy supplies and do this again.
I think I will give this a try. My problem is always having straps falling down unless wearing the racer-back style. I'm guessing there is a pattern for that somewhere. I also prefer a front fastening since I have never gotten the knack of fastening it in back; always fastened in front and then twisted it around to finish putting it on.
@@shmataboro8634 That works if it is a front hook garment. Changing the straps on the standard back hook is usually a simple thing but does create issues putting the thing on. That's why it's better to have that way from the start. And even then bras never fit quite right. Ready-made clothing of any type never quite fits correctly without some alterations. I think my best option in the long run is to find a pattern or draft one that fits my body. Being a long-time clothing maker, I'm all to aware of my fitting issues. I seem to be of no size standard. LOL
I need to learn to do this. My problem is different from everyone else, but we all still understand each others' problem. I'm only an "A cup", but I still need to wear a bra. Here's my problem with "fitting". Despite being a small woman, 5'1", my upper torso is exceptionally "large around". And yet (surprise!), I have those small "A cup" bosoms. So, I always have to purchase the "A cup" bra which has the largest girth that a particular brand makes. And then I use "extenders" with hooks to lengthen the horizontal strap around my back. Well, guess what! Lengthening the girth of the bra with extenders causes the shoulder straps to move forward and fall off my shoulders. I bought a bra online a few weeks ago,... and separately, I bought extenders with hooks, because without them the bra was too tight "around". I couldn't breath in the bra without extenders in the back.
I have the same issues, needing extenders then the straps falling off, and rounded full breast. Absolutely cannot ever find a well-fitting bra. Ok, trying this.
I will have to try! My one boob is bigger than the other after nursing and even though I’m in my 40’s and haven’t nursed in a while lol they never evened out. So only been wearing sports bras from walmart.
Mine never evened out either. Darn babies not liking to nurse on one side as much as the other. My babies are all in their 30's so I've given up the idea of being symmetric

I was just talking to someone last week about how I am just not interested in making my own bras. I’m a 36J/K, and I’m in that size group where they just don’t make moulded bras in my size, and all the ones I can find in my size give me cone boobs or a shape I don’t like under clothes (or are $100!). I thought all fabric/soft cup bras just HAD to be pointy shaped. I’ll be surprised if I look into your store suggestions and find a rounded shape in my size - then I might have to eat my words and try making my own bra!
I am very inspired to make my own bra. I have fibromyalgia and most bras I buy irritate my skin hurt my bad back, and don't fit properly. My boobs have seen better days so the usual way to measure for a bra just doesn't do it for me, I am heavy busted and I call them spaniel ears. how in goodness' name do you measure for those. I found the alternative measuring you showed interesting, I wonder if Skill Share does a bra-making course, If not, maybe you could do one. I hate bras. I have a small cup size and wide band size. I can never find a bra that fits. I’ve went years without wearing one but recently I’ve found the want to wear one for some … lift. So I’ve just resulted to wearing a snug tank top under my shirts.
Standard measure for size asks for underbust (ribs) number, chest above bra, and "fullest". Is that WITH a badly fitting bra on, or just naked? ribs number seems logical. Neither of the others make sense. Straps tight dig and make divots in shoulders, or loose-ish (non painful) gives no lift-support at all. Is ribs to point WITH or without bad bra?
I looked up this bra and it didn't have a front closure. Does it come with that option or did you modify the pattern for front closure? Really enjoy your videos on both channels. 🙂

My problem in buying off the shelf bras is that I prefer wider straps cos the thin ones cut in. But they only tend to make those for big breasted women and I'm only a B cup. Yes, I'm struggling to find a bra that is soft, supportive, and easy to put on and take off. I've finally turned to sports-type bras with moulded cups. These aren't perfect either! Some create a monoboob. They often don't have adjustable straps and my shoulders are thin. Straps are often very narrow - not much help for full breasts. Often the band at the base is too narrow so it rolls up and cuts into the underside of my breasts. And often they are just plain ugly!!! I love the look of the ice silk bras but haven't yet found one that supports my breasts.
Its common to go through quite a few mockups when its a new "block" aka core version of a garment, and even more so when its something that needs to fit a very specific way. Muumuu vs house coat vs vest vs corset all fit the shoulders and bust, but *how* varies immensely.

So glad to find you! Bras are a problem. If they don't give you monoboobs they'll cut into you. I buy from a top line, but come the end of day I'm almost hyperventilating in trying to get it off. I dont like a back clasp. Its ridiculous. You either have to reach behind to clasp, or do up in front and twist around. I remember in the 1950's those gorgeous bras that yes, were pointy, but lovingly wrapped each of the girls. I want that! They were made out of strips of fabric that wound around the girls and so captured the real shape. Marilyn Monroe featured these bras. I remember my Aunt wearing them. But beware, these bras are truly sexy.
I’m up for giving this a try because every time I finally find an affordable bra that is bearable they discontinue it. I want a bra that opens in the front, I fractured my shoulder a year ago….I had to stop wearing a bra…. Got some you put on over your head…with help… I hate stores, it is all for young ladies, only, hot to wear, plastic sweat ones here in Texas , .. humid weather… I am Muslim for the last 40 years, I wear more clothes, going out only at night to avoid the heat….I wear a blood sugar sensor on my other arm, so straps are not helping me ….the strap peels off or loosen es the sensor… looks like I will just be braless, then.. can’t see to make my own, no money, but I can pray about all this…women’s undergarments were a awful journey in my life, imagine the 1800 s , even worse…I am an average size…now older, I wear a garment over my shirt to avoid seeing my curves and nipples, I look ridiculous like a down going hill.. no breasts at all….diabetic and with bulging tummy of fat around middle…. The first thing you see is my tummy sticking out even after dieting….but it all could be worse…. I will be ok….
I’m 78 and when needing to wear a bra I have a NATURANA, front hook & eye closure, cup E, 40DD. I came across this about ten years ago and is the only bra that’s ever been comfortable. But now I also have the confidence to not wear a bra at all and that gives me real comfort. x.
I am close to retirement. All the women I know and have known, the first thing they do when they get home is take off their bra. Perhaps you could invent a bra that can be removed without having to pass the straps down one sleeve, then extricating the bra down the other? In this day and age there must be a method to make the straps easy to facilitate removal?? Also the same with knickers. Can't someone patent and create knickers you can change without having to get fully undressed? Side hooks? Loved your vid. PS I have the same old green Singers as yours (along with my collection of 5 others, one being a fancy new Janome for quilting)!
My aunt used to have bra straps that were attached by a hook at the front. It was a kind of sideways hook so it didn't stick out (or into her!). The part on the strap was like half a buckle or a flat loop as I remember
I've found that their bra making kits have enough fabric for 2 bra's. You'll need to get the hardware for the second one but you should have enough fabric.

I am a 36I/G (US/UK) and it is darn near impossible to find a properly fitted bra. And don't even get me started on the back pain. Just ordered a bunch of new bras in my size (allegedly) and not even one fits right. Not one! I am so done with this. Been making my own garments for years but always heard bras would be too hard. But I am inspired now. My question is: would a corset be more comfortable? I been wearing primarily sports bras to help my back pain for half a decade. At this point I don't care if I look good, so long as I am comfortable. So whatever provides the best support (looking good would be a perk tho) and I am all in.
What a great idea making your own bra. My chiropractor has been saying that I would benefit from a racing back but mist are sports bras and they are very uncomfortable. They are often hard to find so making my own is a very good option.

I have a question- I want my breasts to sit higher than they do in my current bra. Currently they’re near the smallest part of my rib cage in a bra. I want them higher than the strap allows(it’s a sports bra and it has this like hooking system instead of the sliding strap). Would shortening the strap work? Or should I invest in a good corset to get the support I crave
I've been too chicken to do bra making, but I LOVE making my own underwear. Picking my own fabric is the best thing ever. Maybe I'll make a bra one day! Especially if it's a pain to find cute feeding bras like you said.
Playtex used to have the "18- hour" bras, even cotton lined cups and the plushy elastic band underneath. Cant find cotton and they just dont make them anymore. when i was very obese, they fit better.cannot stand synthetic, esp not lace anything. I like a camisole type thing with a molded cup.?
I just can’t take the underwire. It’s always to small. I used to take them out. I only use non seam bras now. Women in one piece. Can’t even feel them, they are so comfortable.
I appreciate your video and would like to make my own bra however I have checked out the website you recommended and I find it very hard to negotiate. I'm trying to look at a kit but it is confusing and asks questions that I have no idea what they are talking about. For example they ask if I want a large kit or a small kit? What the hell does that mean? So frustrating.

So, what pattern can I use for round cup and a lot of support and very modest for 40 B? No, I didn't have a mastectomy, I'm just fat with a small cup. It's always been small. I just don't want cleavage from fat, I want each one very roundly very supported.

So my older sister took our Mothers bras and altered them for us. It was genius! I'm trying to make my own bra at the moment, adapted from my basic bodice block. I'm mostly bedbound (ME and POTS), and finding something comfortable is very difficult. Sports bras don't work for my bigger ladies, elastic underbands keep cutting upward, underwire is evil. Wish me luck!

Try Pin-up Girls Ingrid. Front or back close, no wires. My daughter-in-law is a 32L. It took a few tries to get it right, because of the shape of her breasts, but now it’s super simple.
Hi, not that you asked for this input but I had POTS and ultra-high doses of injected methylcobalamin (an easily absorbable form of B12) made my POTS symptoms disappear. My B12 level was normal, so it was a surprise that this helped so much.

Wow; I had no idea you could even make your own bra! I have a small ribcage and full, lopsided breasts, so finding a bra to actually fit me has been a challenge over the years. Now that I'm older, I'm dealing with some arthritis issues, and it would be wonderful to have a front closure with no underwire and soft straps that don't leave dents in my body! Give it a try, just be patient until you get the fit correct but long-term you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I share your OA issues along with a problem rotator cuff which will most likely need surgery, so it's time to make a few front closing bras to make getting dressed less painful.
I can vouch for making your own bras - I had never found a bra that fit and was comfortable (and affordable!) until I started making my own. I'm very small-boned but have a lot of tissue, and a semi-OK fitting bra meant specialty stores and prices above $100. When I started on my making journey, I could buy beautiful fabric and lace and all the fittings - elastics, closures, clasps, thread, etc. - for a third of that andin more quality, colors. Also I've found that Bra Makers is a great source, and if you're in the US, Gigi's is the source so you don't have to pay duty to have things shipped from Canada.
I will never go back to store-bought bras! YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Totally agree and have been making my own bras for so many years I don't even think about store-bought bras these days. By coincidence, next week or so I'm planning on another bra making session after I finish some jeans...usually I make 4-6 at a time, it's so much quicker to do a production run and more rewarding at the end.

Lately, I have been strongly considering making my own bras because I have permanent(?) indents where the straps have rested on my shoulders day after day for years holding up my generous 'boobage'** and because nothing ever fits me right . I'm also strongly considering making a corset instead of a regular bra; it just seems like it would hold them up much better with less pain. Underwire. I'm getting to the point where I'm liking it less and less. If it weren't for the fact that large breasts left hanging will drag the front of your neck down, I'd go without a bra for the rest of my life! But I'm too vain for that. I don't want a turkey neck just because I hate bras.
(If you're wondering what I'm talking about and you have generous 'boobage' like me, test it for yourself. When you take off your bra at night, bend your head back as far as you can (like you're looking straight up at the ceiling) until the skin on your neck feels strained, then lift your 'boobage' with your arms. You'll notice the 'pull' on the skin on the front of your neck either lessens or goes away entirely when you lift the sisters. That's why I wear a bra to bed now; I don't want them pulling on my neck night after night until my neck looks like a turkey's. It'll look bad enough soon enough already. I don't want to help it along!)

Only one aunt on my dad's side was flat like me. (Shaking my head). And yet, here I am. Wide back, small cup. Nothing fits. And I do sign language for the deaf. Bra-less won't work.

Bras have been the bane of my existence. I am a-symmetrical, so one side is larger than the other. I also have a spinal issue which has caused a severe curving and twisting, so bras cause me great pain, mainly because they cut off my circulation and cause me to “blow” up. I have considered making my own for the simple reason that I could make it to fit me. I have just felt so intimidated by it, however, that I never have. Now you have me thinking about it once more. 😁
You should do it! I've been making my own bras for years because there is no such thing as a store bought bra that fits me. It's not as hard as you think, and it's actually life changing. Just make a mock up and be prepared for several iterations of it if you are shaped very differently than store bought bras. You will get there, though, and it will be worth it. 😊
PS, if your mock up still cuts off circulation, look up fit adjustments for a cylindrical torso. That could be the issue.
Go for it! I’m slightly asymmetrical as well and store-bought is always too big on one side and too small on the other. I’m working on sewing my bra and I’m super happy with it so far!

My current plan is to try hacking the bras I do have. Taking the parts I do like and combining them into one bra. They probably won't be pretty but they will hopefully fit.

I have that problem and costochondritis into the bargain. Weary of buying overpriced bras that are uncomfortable or downright agonising to wear.... I have drawers full but feel that spending on clothes is futile because cancer and the butchering we have to succumb to has affected my whole body and my mental health. I'm unnaturally overweight but not obese and have acid reflux. I was told that I developed sleep apnea as a result of sleeping in a reclining position due to my reflux. Someone advised me to begin sleeping in a bustier rather than having a dangerous stomach surgery and surviving on a CPAP machine. Well, I tried it, and IT WORKED!!! Instantly! Now I just wear a bustier to bed. No surprises, no apnea, and no surgery.

Add to this a shoulder problem, which means I'd prefer a front opening bra. Definitely giving this a go, I've been sewing for most of my life but had never thought to attempt a bra. I have stopped wearing bras because I had problems with fit and costs. This showed up in my feed. I haven't considered to make my own! I'm also a mother of five and now a grandmother of4. Blessings to you!

Hello! You must come from a long line of industrious women. I had one child (albeit in my 30s). I can remember hardly ever having the time to keep house n homeschooling my son. This is such an informative video! I am a 38H and I have struggled with bras for years. To get one that fits properly is well over $200 in Calgary, Alberta! I'm retired so this is a ridiculous expense. Time to dust off my sewing machine and give it a go! Thank you!

I recommend tracing the pattern on tracing paper instead of cutting out the original. You might have to try a few different combinations to get a perfect fit.
I trace all my patterns & have for years-patterns are expensive! Not brave enough to try making a bra yet.
Thanks for the inspiration! It used to be such an ordeal to try on bras for hours, with ridiculous results, only to have to finally “fudge” the fit actually. Also to use bra extenders. Not to mention the big problem that the department stores no longer exist! Sports bras fit okay, but are difficult to pull on over damp skin after a shower. So no more whining! I love the idea of a separating zipper in the front.

Do you offer a pattern for a mastectomy bra?
I’m currently making my first bra! I’m making a 18th century short stay, but adding padding that’s sold at stores to give me more support and shape as I am not very busty. I’m also using normal bra closure instead of the eyelets in the back. I’m also making the strap longer and not tied together with lace in the front. I’m so sick of my store bought bras because the straps are always falling down, but if I make it any tighter the straps stay up, but then the actual bra bunches up. I can’t wait to finish my short stay! I wanna make more modern bras too using your tips and I will look at the options from the website you listed. I agree that it is very empowering to feel self reliant from purchasing store bought clothes. We do still have to buy the fabric, but it is so cool to have pieces made just for us and our measurements. I have a tiny waist and skirts never fit me at the waist as I like and instead sit on my hips. I am striving towards a handmade wardrobe just like you. The problem is that most of the projects I do aren’t very wearable as I’m so drawn to historical fashion.
honestly i will look into this. my ideal bra would be a bralette style, lace in material, a thicker lace band and thinner straps. im quite fussy with my bras but find that the style i want doesn't work for my DD's/E's. i only like lace bralettes because i wear pretty skimpy outfits and like to have my bra almost blend in/become part of my outfit. most store bought bras above a D cup are so full coverage and super bulky, it literally makes me look like the letter "P"

This is on my to-do list because mastectomy bras are crap. They're usually quite matronly and the ones that aren't are ridiculously expensive. Not only that, but they are impossible to find in stores near me. Regular bras, for anyone unaware, DO NOT FIT reconstructed "breasts." Reconstructed are a completely different shape no matter how realistic they look and thus will just never fit a traditional bra. I'm wearing Coobies in the meantime. Highly recommend if you're at a loss and just need SOMETHING to tide you over.
Oh, and PSA: I never thought I'd have BC, let alone BC before 30. Ladies, BC is NOT just lumps!!!!

Since early in my first pregnancy 4.5 years ago, I haven't been able to wear the underbust part of a bra for more than an hour. I am on the large side, overweight with smaller girls relative to my weight, but they hang low - lots of nursing! Finding shirts, dresses, outfits that look acceptable to society has been difficult to say the least, and I'm unsure of even how to make my own bras, since they all appear to squeeze under the bust in order to give that sought after support. it's all well and good to go braless when you're an a cup, but with pronounced nipps that line up with my elbows, I'm in a quandary.. I see that Katherine has a free vintage pattern that, if done in a heavier knit, may give me what i need. So far wearing xs tanks has been my only solution..
Vintage materials were WAY more comfortable. Cotton, linen, and silk. Congratulations! What a blessing. You will love making baby clothes.

I made a bra several years ago following Beverley's online Craftsy course. I loved it but never got around to making more bras. Now I am older and find bra buying a most unsatisfying task. I asked for a fitting in one upmarket store here in UK and was treated with such derision and the woman tried to sell me bras which were definitely not my size. Maybe she was having a very bad day as I have had fittings in that store before and the service and fit was perfect. Anyway, that was what made me realise I need to make my own again. I have ordered some kits in pretty fabrics as I already have the patterns I used before. Thank you for this video. Your disussion has helped me a lot. However do you manage it with such a busy life!!! Amazing!
I"m 78. I've never EVER had a bra that fit. Underwires seem to come only in small so they dig in. I cut them out right away. No better fit but not painful. Bands roll up like rope. Straps dig. I wear bras for bounce control when I am out of the house, but love winter when I can wear extra layers and do without. Measure systems show D to G..waht? Store fitters have no clue, so I end up trying on 30 and walking out. I wear them till they are shreds and go on another disappointing hunt. I've sewn documented costuming for 4 centuries. 18C wedding parties ...chemise, stays and gowns, military uniforms, woven the cloth, made the braid, woven tartan socks and wrote the book so distant actors can make their own from my cloth. I've grown the linen, spun the yarn, made the lace. But can't cobble up a modern bra for myself. Looks like KIT is the way to go. ..didn't know there were such things ))) Yahooo !!!! There is hope yet )))

Nice video, that's a topic I struggle a lot. But when it comes to the reasons why to make your own bras I think you missed a very importan point. Every item you make yourself is one thing a that doesn't come from the modern slavery system. To me that's a very important point!

I've made corsets in the past but never thought about making bra's. I used to be very blessed in the chest department, major weight loss/ill health has left me deflated. Nothing I buy fits well anymore, so the answer is clear and I need to put down my crochet hook and plug in my machine!
I was just about to jump into making my own bra! My favorite store bought style was discontinued and what I have bought since have been less than adequate, so I'm happy that I found this video!

I need to do this. Mine have always been lopsided. When I was breastfeeding my oldest child, one side just stopped making milk one day but I was able to continue to nurse on the other side for another year. After nursing five more babies, it's even more exaggerated. There is literally no bra in the world made for me. Sorry to ramble and go TMI, but thank you for the tips!
I have a wonky shape, but I was able to grade together the vertical measurements from one size with horizontal measurements from another size, then make a few iterations of customization off of that to get a really well fitting bra. I had an unfortunate life event and never finished my second one, I need to buy supplies and do this again.
I think I will give this a try. My problem is always having straps falling down unless wearing the racer-back style. I'm guessing there is a pattern for that somewhere. I also prefer a front fastening since I have never gotten the knack of fastening it in back; always fastened in front and then twisted it around to finish putting it on.
@sandyp2485. What if you crossed the straps in back?
@@shmataboro8634 That works if it is a front hook garment. Changing the straps on the standard back hook is usually a simple thing but does create issues putting the thing on. That's why it's better to have that way from the start. And even then bras never fit quite right. Ready-made clothing of any type never quite fits correctly without some alterations.
I think my best option in the long run is to find a pattern or draft one that fits my body. Being a long-time clothing maker, I'm all to aware of my fitting issues. I seem to be of no size standard. LOL
I need to learn to do this. My problem is different from everyone else, but we all still understand each others' problem. I'm only an "A cup", but I still need to wear a bra. Here's my problem with "fitting". Despite being a small woman, 5'1", my upper torso is exceptionally "large around". And yet (surprise!), I have those small "A cup" bosoms. So, I always have to purchase the "A cup" bra which has the largest girth that a particular brand makes. And then I use "extenders" with hooks to lengthen the horizontal strap around my back. Well, guess what! Lengthening the girth of the bra with extenders causes the shoulder straps to move forward and fall off my shoulders. I bought a bra online a few weeks ago,... and separately, I bought extenders with hooks, because without them the bra was too tight "around". I couldn't breath in the bra without extenders in the back.
I have the same issues, needing extenders then the straps falling off, and rounded full breast. Absolutely cannot ever find a well-fitting bra. Ok, trying this.
Move the straps- even put them close together in center back area.or do spacers on side seam
I will have to try! My one boob is bigger than the other after nursing and even though I’m in my 40’s and haven’t nursed in a while lol they never evened out. So only been wearing sports bras from walmart.
Mine never evened out either. Darn babies not liking to nurse on one side as much as the other. My babies are all in their 30's so I've given up the idea of being symmetric
My local sewing stores have padding and underwire on stock, I am not sure if I will choose using that though

I was just talking to someone last week about how I am just not interested in making my own bras. I’m a 36J/K, and I’m in that size group where they just don’t make moulded bras in my size, and all the ones I can find in my size give me cone boobs or a shape I don’t like under clothes (or are $100!). I thought all fabric/soft cup bras just HAD to be pointy shaped. I’ll be surprised if I look into your store suggestions and find a rounded shape in my size - then I might have to eat my words and try making my own bra!

I am very inspired to make my own bra. I have fibromyalgia and most bras I buy irritate my skin hurt my bad back, and don't fit properly. My boobs have seen better days so the usual way to measure for a bra just doesn't do it for me, I am heavy busted and I call them spaniel ears. how in goodness' name do you measure for those. I found the alternative measuring you showed interesting, I wonder if Skill Share does a bra-making course, If not, maybe you could do one. I hate bras. I have a small cup size and wide band size. I can never find a bra that fits. I’ve went years without wearing one but recently I’ve found the want to wear one for some … lift. So I’ve just resulted to wearing a snug tank top under my shirts.

Standard measure for size asks for underbust (ribs) number, chest above bra, and "fullest". Is that WITH a badly fitting bra on, or just naked? ribs number seems logical. Neither of the others make sense. Straps tight dig and make divots in shoulders, or loose-ish (non painful) gives no lift-support at all. Is ribs to point WITH or without bad bra?

I looked up this bra and it didn't have a front closure. Does it come with that option or did you modify the pattern for front closure? Really enjoy your videos on both channels. 🙂
It has an option for a front closure - both zipper and hook& eye. It shows right on the front of the package. Make sure you are looking at Ingrid.
Wow what a fantastic video. I still feel a bit daunted though. Can you make a recommendation on potential pattern for me please? My problem in buying off the shelf bras is that I prefer wider straps cos the thin ones cut in. But they only tend to make those for big breasted women and I'm only a B cup. What's a good pattern for this? Am not fussed about underwires.
Yes, I'm struggling to find a bra that is soft, supportive, and easy to put on and take off. I've finally turned to sports-type bras with moulded cups. These aren't perfect either! Some create a monoboob. They often don't have adjustable straps and my shoulders are thin. Straps are often very narrow - not much help for full breasts. Often the band at the base is too narrow so it rolls up and cuts into the underside of my breasts. And often they are just plain ugly!!!
I love the look of the ice silk bras but haven't yet found one that supports my breasts.
I am on my third mock-up for my bra, I'm curious how many mock-ups you had to make...or if you managed to get the right size from the start!
Its common to go through quite a few mockups when its a new "block" aka core version of a garment, and even more so when its something that needs to fit a very specific way.
Muumuu vs house coat vs vest vs corset all fit the shoulders and bust, but *how* varies immensely.
I actually just made the one functional mock-up because the pattern was so specific to my size.

So glad to find you! Bras are a problem. If they don't give you monoboobs they'll cut into you. I buy from a top line, but come the end of day I'm almost hyperventilating in trying to get it off. I dont like a back clasp. Its ridiculous. You either have to reach behind to clasp, or do up in front and twist around. I remember in the 1950's those gorgeous bras that yes, were pointy, but lovingly wrapped each of the girls. I want that! They were made out of strips of fabric that wound around the girls and so captured the real shape. Marilyn Monroe featured these bras. I remember my Aunt wearing them. But beware, these bras are truly sexy.
I’m up for giving this a try because every time I finally find an affordable bra that is bearable they discontinue it. I’m hating underwire after decades but not quite resigned to the uniboob look of a sports bra yet. Thank you for the info and encouragement. Helps give me confidence knowing your background in sewing undergarments.

I want a bra that opens in the front, I fractured my shoulder a year ago….I had to stop wearing a bra…. Got some you put on over your head…with help… I hate stores, it is all for young ladies, only, hot to wear, plastic sweat ones here in Texas , .. humid weather… I am Muslim for the last 40 years, I wear more clothes, going out only at night to avoid the heat….I wear a blood sugar sensor on my other arm, so straps are not helping me ….the strap peels off or loosen es the sensor… looks like I will just be braless, then.. can’t see to make my own, no money, but I can pray about all this…women’s undergarments were a awful journey in my life, imagine the 1800 s , even worse…I am an average size…now older, I wear a garment over my shirt to avoid seeing my curves and nipples, I look ridiculous like a down going hill.. no breasts at all….diabetic and with bulging tummy of fat around middle…. The first thing you see is my tummy sticking out even after dieting….but it all could be worse…. I will be ok….
I’m 78 and when needing to wear a bra I have a NATURANA, front hook & eye closure, cup E, 40DD. I came across this about ten years ago and is the only bra that’s ever been comfortable. But now I also have the confidence to not wear a bra at all and that gives me real comfort. x.

I am close to retirement. All the women I know and have known, the first thing they do when they get home is take off their bra. Perhaps you could invent a bra that can be removed without having to pass the straps down one sleeve, then extricating the bra down the other? In this day and age there must be a method to make the straps easy to facilitate removal?? Also the same with knickers. Can't someone patent and create knickers you can change without having to get fully undressed? Side hooks? Loved your vid. PS I have the same old green Singers as yours (along with my collection of 5 others, one being a fancy new Janome for quilting)!
My aunt used to have bra straps that were attached by a hook at the front. It was a kind of sideways hook so it didn't stick out (or into her!). The part on the strap was like half a buckle or a flat loop as I remember
I've found that their bra making kits have enough fabric for 2 bra's. You'll need to get the hardware for the second one but you should have enough fabric.

If you are a small cup A-B-C it does. Not if you are G-H-J-K-L cups. I buy the yardage separately, but buy the findings kits.
It’s harder to find a bra that supports my DD’s now that I’m 60+, especially since I only wear wireless now. I’ve never made my own, but I’m intrigued by your linen bra. Do you think the style you made in linen would support the larger bust of a plus-sized lady?
I am a 36I/G (US/UK) and it is darn near impossible to find a properly fitted bra. And don't even get me started on the back pain. Just ordered a bunch of new bras in my size (allegedly) and not even one fits right. Not one!
I am so done with this. Been making my own garments for years but always heard bras would be too hard. But I am inspired now.
My question is: would a corset be more comfortable? I been wearing primarily sports bras to help my back pain for half a decade. At this point I don't care if I look good, so long as I am comfortable. So whatever provides the best support (looking good would be a perk tho) and I am all in.
What a great idea making your own bra. My chiropractor has been saying that I would benefit from a racing back but mist are sports bras and they are very uncomfortable. They are often hard to find so making my own is a very good option.
Why not make a racing-style bra from pretty fabrics and lace? When you make your own they can be whatever 'you' wish!!
Sewing is not my thing, wish it was, being big breasted and running out of bras that fit in a country that doesn’t do my size. But I Just wanted to say you look absolutely amazing. Hard to believe you have 5 children including a young baby. Superwoman ❤
I have a question- I want my breasts to sit higher than they do in my current bra. Currently they’re near the smallest part of my rib cage in a bra. I want them higher than the strap allows(it’s a sports bra and it has this like hooking system instead of the sliding strap). Would shortening the strap work? Or should I invest in a good corset to get the support I crave
I've been too chicken to do bra making, but I LOVE making my own underwear. Picking my own fabric is the best thing ever. Maybe I'll make a bra one day! Especially if it's a pain to find cute feeding bras like you said.
But if you make a bra from the same underwear fabrics you have a whole matching set...that's what I do.
Playtex used to have the "18- hour" bras, even cotton lined cups and the plushy elastic band underneath. Cant find cotton and they just dont make them anymore. when i was very obese, they fit better.cannot stand synthetic, esp not lace anything. I like a camisole type thing with a molded cup.?
I just can’t take the underwire. It’s always to small. I used to take them out. I only use non seam bras now. Women in one piece. Can’t even feel them, they are so comfortable.

I appreciate your video and would like to make my own bra however I have checked out the website you recommended and I find it very hard to negotiate. I'm trying to look at a kit but it is confusing and asks questions that I have no idea what they are talking about. For example they ask if I want a large kit or a small kit? What the hell does that mean? So frustrating.

This is awesome! I might actually take this project on. The different style of measuring bust size seems much more accurate and I'm beyond frustrated with finding commercial bras that fit and flatter.
