Good stuff. You have brought along the right attitude to make living off grid a success! We've been off grid for 15 years now, from way back in the days when solar panels were horrendous money. $1650 each for a 250 watt panel... Put them around the corner 100m away so we didn't have to worry about putting so many holes in our watertight roof! Makes them easy to clean too. September is the worst time, with all the pine pollen landing on them. A couple of weeks of pine pollen will drop the output of each string from 30 amps to 20 amps. Wash them off and you're all good to go for another wee while :-)

I totally agree. I have been living off grid for 10 years. We live on 120 acres in SW Colorado in high desert 6500’ elevation.
10 years in and building everything it has taken a toll on me physically. I never saw it coming, and I am a very strong person and never realized the stress I was under. A large bear decided to enter my house three days ago and I have to be honest it pretty much scared me to death. My dog was so scared she ran several mile down the road and didn’t want to come back. We trapped the bear and all is well.
Homesteading off grid is not for the faint of heart. I am now bringing in people to live with me and build community.

Your'e a smart guy, you figured out how to live correctly quite early on and you have so much time left to enjoy and develop the lifestyle. No one has the exact same circumstances, so you can't really tell people how to dot , its a journey of self discovery! I've always wanted to live not off grid, but sustainably and self sufficient. To that end I bought a small piece of land with an old small cottage on it and took it from there. Now 7 years on and I've worked a 7 day week for all of it ( include hunting a s 'work'!) and never felt better or more energized. I am 63 and feel like I have a lot of good living left to do. Doing all the things I always wanted to do, like hunting, forging , reloadingI, as the property development slowly gets completed. I also get the negative vibes from some people, but I just tell them not to be afraid and give it a go...More power to you!

Than in my early 20s I visited an island and discovered the joys of water tanks and long drop toilets!! I loved it. No bills!! Life was so free and relaxing!! I'd go back in an instant but not by myself again as I realise I need a buddy for safety incase I had an accident etc. Very hard to find older guys who want to chop firewood now 😂😂😂

We always had the idea of living self sufficiently, never got there but still like the idea. We own a small Bach which is our bug out / happy place and we enjoy modifying it to be a little better each year as we can afford it. Yes we have a composting loo and a septic tank, the septic tank only needs emptying every 5 years or more as we dont live there full time. We have power which is not reliable and Ive finally got a wood burner so we don't freeze etc when the power goes off. At 70 I cant see us living there permanently but we know the allure, good on you. The only thing I would say is make sure you have it all finished and running well before you turn 60, it gets real hard after that to do the things you think nothing of now and I get really cold easily.

We live off the grid up in the Far North. Best decision we ever made.
So true about the rats. They have eaten through the chook door And up through the floor of the wood shed.
Determined little buggers. They are after the chook pallets. My dog loves hunting the little buggers.
Good advice about firewood and the water tanks.
Hubby was very quesey about using a compost toilet at first, but tney are perfect. No smell and super easy to use.
I have one of those big black compost bins up in the bush line. Great compost matter for the native trees.
Personally not keen to use the compost around food we are growing to eat, but thats a personal choise.
One thing we have done is build an enclosed vegetable garden.
The possums, birds and my dog like to snack, especially the tomatoes.
Love your home made clothes rack. Love mine. The only appilances l don’t have is a stove and a clothes dryer.
We use a little bench oven and the BBQ. Had a coal range when we lived in town, Man l miss it.
Super expensive to buy a new one, but we are currently exploring the options.
Most people around us live off the grid, and each of our dwellings are individual and unique to each of us.

All the way along I just had to keep reminding myself it was an adventure and an exploration and boy has the past 12 months flown by. I didn't know what I didn't know and in some ways that has been a blessing because I did it all without a car and carrying home massive bottles of water to my section and having only a portaloo for 5.5 months was a feat in itself. Three of us lived for 3 years in a 6*9 garage, totally off grid. It was heated by a 9kg natural gas heater, it was toasty warm and it also provided the lighting. The bottle lasted a week. To have a shower we heated water and filled a 20L solar shower bag. We didnt know about composting toilets back then and even though we had a long drop because of my phobia of certain flat critters we used a camping toilet stool over a bucket that was emptied into large hole in the ground. The only thing I missed was a vacuum cleaner, oh and a computer. We had no phone service at all. Unfortunately finances dictated we had to sell the property, but I'd do it again in a heart beat. I've learnt so much since then about how to live off grid far more comfortably, not that we were uncomfortable.

Off grid in northland for five years before that five years on a boat .
We have a worm based sewage system works well .
No real need to heat up here so have not yet installed a fireplace .
Once you get off grid properly set up its no different than being connected but you do not have the bills coming in and when real bad weather hits you dont have power go out .
Rats and mice are always an issue if you are near the bush will not have a cat they murder the wildlife and bait residual scares me with the dogs so traps it is.
    Also trap possums.
I have fenced off one hector of bush in the middle of my property its great seeing the bush undergrowth regenerate from the bare earth left behind from pigs goats and possum's ravages .

Haha, I laughed when you mentioned the dishwasher... Our house came with one, we never use it. After having house sitters almost all of our spoons were gone- oh well we just did without. Some months later one of my children was looking for a hiding place for a birthday present for me and went to put it in the dishwasher (knowing I would never find it there) and discovered all the unwashed spoons and a few dishes we hadn't missed 🙂
