  • Ray Lema, a multifaceted musician, composer, and arranger, is a central figure in African music. Born on March 30, 1946, in Lufu-Toto, Democratic Republic of Congo, he is renowned for his skills on the piano, guitar, drums, and percussion. Raised in a Protestant family, Lema initially pursued a path towards priesthood, studying classical music in a Catholic seminary in Kinshasa. However, he soon developed a passion for rock and roll and Congolese popular music.
In 1962, Lema left the seminary and began his musical career in Kinshasa's clubs, collaborating with celebrated artists like Tabu Ley Rochereau, Abeti, and Papa Wemba, and performing in a rock band called "The Yss Boys." His relocation to France in 1971 marked the beginning of an experimental phase, blending jazz, African music, classical, and pop. He recorded several albums with labels such as Polydor and ECM and worked alongside greats like Manu Dibango, Don Cherry, and Abbey Lincoln.
Lema is considered one of the most influential African musicians of the 20th century. His music, characterized by technical virtuosity, melodic inventiveness, and deep connection to African roots, is best exemplified in his famous track "Iyolela (Marabout)," a piece that truly reflects his musical genius and cultural heritage.
