I can vouch for the rarity of this game. I used to see Sengoku 1 all the time. It seemed like that, King of the Monsters and Cyber Lip were in every arcade at the time. I never even knew it had a sequel until the late 90s when I found Neo Geo fansites.
"Claude is a lover of pudding and is not looked for" 😂
He also stopped training before his limbs grew, awesome!
i was about to reply "hey.. you ignored claudes love of pudding!!" also jack loves philosophy better than anything. his favorite food is celery...
@@arcadianlhadattshirotsughW33Z amazing! He also kind of looks like Joseph Joestar
@@jacethomas5562makes total sense now that i think about it.. my only thing about japanese characters and celery is how Kou hates it from Ao Haru Ride..
That's like the worst Shakespeare quote I've ever heard.
Renegade 3 was also a time travelling brawler, but it was utterly terrible.
This was great man. I somehow haven't played this one yet. Time to fire up the neo sd. I love beat em ups and this one seems to have more variety than most.
Sengoku 2 shatters my expectations with Spectacular graphics and STUNNING gameplay
So Claude stopped training Martial Arts at the ripe age of six years old, huh?😂😂😂😂😂
As per usual - great review! I think they "black out" the Neo CD screen when pausing to act as a screen saver - to avoid CRT burn-in.
Yeah, I think it's a good theory, but the games are very inconsistent about this.
Sengoku 2 seems great. Only played 1 and 3 so far, which I own on the AES. But man, 2 is hard to find.
I love this series. The Sengoku games may all have their quirks, but they're all a good time. I have all 3 on AES, and 2 has become my favorite over the years. It maynot have as fluid animation as 3, or the combo system from it, but taking the transformations and power-ups from the first and adding in the high/low, blocking, and specials really makes it a fun game that can be played with a lot of technique. Also, it's wonderfully colorful.
Throw in an adolescent mutagen-affected reptile ninjitsu practitioner narrating the name of the stage like “Big Apple, 3AM” and “Prehistoric Turtlesauras” and you’ve described the plot of TMNT: Turtles in Time. XD
I'm probably the only person who liked the chanting music in Sengoku 1...
Thank you!! Now I know a little more of neogeo
Your videos are always great, love these deep dives into the neogeo catalog.
Finally the legendary NeoGeo BB series has returned! And it's about time too!! With arguably the greatest side scrolling beat 'em up on the system.
I love Sengoku 2 Alec. It happens to be my favorite out of the series. I remember playing the game at a local Dairy Queen that me and the family would have Sunday lunch located in Paramus, NJ. Me and my brother use to play co-op and defeated the game on my occasions with just a few credits. Sengoku 2 never gets dull with us. 8^)
Thank you for sharing this video Alec, this made my day for sure. 8^)
Anthony..
This series is really good. The first one plays strange but it has a strong personality and it still fun. But this one is on an another whole level
Mike Walsh? As in the protag from The Goonies?
Finding One-Eyed Willie's gold is what set him on the path of adventure that led to him growing up to be a ninja.
The first one looked familiar and now I know why. I’m sure I’ve played this one a couple of times in an old arcade I frequented. It was tucked in the back so I never had enough coins to get far as I’d usually play something else first. Sort of cool having something like this to remind me of those bygone days 😊
Jack is a man of great “strenght”
Wait he was trained in martial arts until he was 6?? That bio reads like he stopped training before he was even a teenager hahah
Squeeeeee ! New basement bros !
Mentioning Samurai Spirits, now that the translation is finally out I'd love you to talk about Bushidou Retsuden.
um.. that boss' speech.. why would i count my blessings for someone to beat me?..there has to be an answer to this riddle..does it mean.. is it cuz.. hmm.. i think i need to have a think...oh well i do know sengoku 3 has pretty good jiggle physics..
It means "It's better that I put you out of your misery now," I think.
@@BasementBrothersthanks.. that never came to me during my big think..
I loved playing Sengoku 2 in the arcade for its rollercoaster-style of action that reminded me of Contra III. At home, though, I prefered the earlier Neo-Geo brawlers like Burning Fight, Mutation Nation and Robo Army that have just more oomph to the fighting action.
This looks like a really good beat em up. Never played or heard of this series, cause like Jack, I'm from Kentucky and I doubt any place in my small town would've ever sold a Neo Geo or had one of these in the arcades. Closest I got was Fatal Fury on SNES/Genesis and Samurai Shodown in the arcade at the mall. But I love this genre a lot and it looks like it'd be a fun one even if it doesn't look as engaging as Streets of Rage 2. The stage variety makes me think I'd have fun with this just like Turtles in Time, and there were plenty of worse beat em ups I enjoyed back then.
Ah Sengoku, Samurai Shodown's older, less popular sibling. From what i've read, the first SamSho was going to be a brawler, much like Sengoku, and the only character that survived the transition to the fighter genre was Gen-An. Seems like these two series always were very close, with the first two Sengoku games probably being the first iterations of what SamSho was going to be, at least at first. I would always choose a good brawler over a good fighter and Sengoku 2 is probably the best on the system, but in this case, SamSho's presence in the gaming landscape is more than welcome. Not to knock on Sengoku, i'm just glad SamSho made it through.
A medieval Japanese princess summoning a cowboy with a crop top and a guy who loves pudding more than talking to beat up ancient spirits and what I presume to be nazis... man I miss the energy of this era.
Sengoku one is game where you play with Michael Jackson from Thriller music clip .
Denver buying this on aes on release and really enjoyed it and your it’s still a good looking game
I still haven't managed to play this - mostly because it's not on any compilations or multi-carts I own, but also because I'm not really a major fan of most side scolling beat-em-ups, bar the odd exception. It does look like a lot of fun though!! Thanks for another informative and entertaining journey through Neo Geo country Alec, you have been sorely missed!!
Try it on an emulator. It’s a really good play through with a friend.
Sometimes I wonder if Surf Ninjas was a real movie or some kind of childhood fever dream.
They certainly don't make'em like Surf Ninjas anymore. Nowadays it would be a direct to cable movie, all shot on location at existing places. All the stunts and the whole island would be done in CG.
Nice game.
What were the live action scenes from?
Surf Ninjas. You missed out on the best era of cinema.
Fair. I know I missed that one, now I gotta watch it! At least I knew it wasn't 3 ninjas! Thanks for sharing.
Haha, Surf Ninjas owns 3 Ninjas. No comparison. Eernie Reyes Jr, Rob Snyder, Leslie Nielsen, Keone Young. It's stupid as hell, but so much fun.
@@BasementBrothers thought that was Leslie Nielsen! And Ernie Reyes Jr? I'm so sold on this!
I never saw this game in the game centers ... always wanted to play it. They should have ported it to the Saturn 🪐😌
The sequel (?) was completely different. I hate all the changes made.
I love the creepy sounds and graphics from 1 and 2😅
It's a bit too old for a Saturn port.
Always thought the Sengoku games were very boring and repetitive, even within the inherently repetitive beat 'em up genre.
3:50 Have you noticed that those orange kasa-hat robed fighters have a mild resemblance to Sokaku Mochizuki? It wouldn't surprise me if the Fatal Fury 3 character was based on a reused sprite. 9:47 Also the fish monsters seem to be recycled from the ones in Crossed Swords. I'm not sure of the Shoguns castle is the Emperor's flying castle rebuilt, or it's a completely different castle. What is it with video games always having X at the end of a year? They may as well call the year of the Battle of Kawanakajima SX61.
Jack stones character description was totally lifted from patrick swayzes character in roadhouse. I ❤ it.
I wonder if anyone else noticed this..
Sengoku 3 is really fun, it lacks personality like the other 2 but is more polished gameplay wise IMO.
The pause after saying his Uncle died😂😂 truly awesome story building.
Wait, he was trained in martial arts until he was six years old… And he is good enough to take out basically an entire army with what he learned until he was six years old?
I dunno. He got a head start when he was young. Maybe he was a prodigy at martial arts.
@@BasementBrothers maybe he’s like Chuck Norris or Segata Sanshiro
Looking for your Sengoku 3 review, which is my favorite of the series!
Oh hell yes, Sengoku 2 time ☺
Yes 🎉 another amazing video in this series. Thank you for all the effort of putting these together ❤
I love three series games my top 3 are 3-sengoku 3 2-sengoku 2 1-sengoku
Claude's grandparents must have been awful! 😛
Never played but this looks so awesome
This game reminds me of Virtua Racing
Best beat'em up on Neo Geo.
Yes, 2 top up 3 for me.
Great review, thank you Sir!
Good start into the week, thank you :)
Great Stuff, as always!
Does Mike's bio say that he's in high school and sings in a rock band, or am I misreading?
And here I thought this brother was dead.
Some of us have busy lives.
You okay? You didn’t sound as positive as you usually do during your videos
Compared to, for example, which other video?
Your voice sounds different in this video and the farland story videos
That's Mr Jakes. This is Neo-Alec.
it took years for this video
2 months in fact. Got delayed about 2 weeks due to work.
