Glad to see these guys seeing this as a bit of a positive opportunity to get this up and running with fiber optic cables, higher standerds of cable technology.
It was a similar story in places hit by war. Continental Europe essentially rebuilt its communication and transport networks after WW2 which is why they have some of the best internet and public transport networks in the world. The UK didn't get hit on quite as big of a scale so we're still left with what the Victorians built and are slowly replacing things as we go which means we still have a lot of places still using extremely outdated infrastructure and poorly designed (for modern use) roads.
To me it's just as aggravating that they put important infrastructure like that in such an idiotic and vulnerable location. All those lines need to terminate into an actual building, preferably at least two stories up.
When I first clicked on the video I thought, "Good. I hate Verizon and the execs are a bunch of a-holes." But then as I watched I felt sympathetic to them and how expensive this is.
Thanks for your contribution. Did you know that your government paid those companies for the implementation of fiber optics almost a decade ago and they did nothing about it other than milking their consumers?
Sure, but when Verizon makes billions, let me repeat for clarity: Billions of dollars in profit every year, you'd think they would at least put some of that money into evolving key strategic locations such as the NYC Cable Vault. And as the video shows, the only reason they are now upgrading this infrastructure is due to it being destroyed and replacing the existing copper cables is more expensive than laying fibreoptic cable.
Verizon's FTTP build that has been going since 2004 was self-serving - they wanted to sell you video (cable TV = big bucks, certainly compared to voice service) and HSI service. BTW, unless you're in an area where FiOS already exists, you ain't gonna' get it - because Verizon has said they're not expanding it to new areas. Why? Because they just hooked up with three large cable companies to share distribution facilities - so they don't have to spend capital on more FTTP construction.
Much respect for the crews handling this operation.
Videos from the verge have the best colour correction ever
I'm impressed, a huge cable co. doing the right thing. Good for them.
I really like these kinds of videos from The Verge. I like that it always doesn't have to be about consumer technology.
The production quality of The Verge videos compared to other tech sites is absolutely astounding.

Thank You, The Verge for creating such great original content
That dude looks really tired, I really appreciate the hard work he and his team are putting in.
I really love this site and the information they report on with such high quality production, keep up the great work guys!
What a mess with all that water. Crazy how they can move forward after a disaster like that
The Verge = National Geographic of Technology.
what an articulate guy

Cool coverage !
the verge + ubuntu = delicious
Amazing video The Verge. Keep it going ! :)
What's aggravating is that it shouldn't have taken Sandy to get all this updated and replaced.

This is why I like The Be

It did not take a natural disaster. Verizon is the only Telco to start a total rebuild with Fiber to the Prem. The build has been going on from 2004.
Except that now they've abandoned the process and won't be expanding it any further just to save a buck.
Good luck to these people.
nice we need more of these :)
I agree. But also it might force verizon to shut down service, which would still piss alot of ppl off.
great company
Good video
YAY VERIZON!

u know what.. who the FCUK would dislike this video..
Pushback from some of the more influential customers (mostly gov't agencies) in the area delayed the change to fiber in the area.
What kind of Instagram video fiter do yall use?
Get ready for your phone bill rates to go up lol
Yeah I like that it doesn't have to be about comsumer products and them praising iphones.
How are they going to prevent another flood disaster from destroying their next infrastructure?
I'm very sorry, and I apologize!
yes

if it isn't broke and updating it cost money don't update it that's how companies think
It won't even be to 2012 standard, just saying. But better them upgrading late than never.
Wrong Post.
we need fiber upgrade across the nation. till a earth quake happens...
