  • Have you ever wondered what pickups sound best in a Les Paul? Today we start to hack away at that mystery by comparing three different Les Pauls with three different sets of pickups against one another. The 2019 Les Paul HP (Burstbucker Pros) vs 2007 Autumn Burst Supreme (490R/498T) vs 2001 Custom Shop Les Paul Florentine (57 Classics). Which one reigns supreme to your ears?

Awesome video. Great comparison. I found myself really loving the Burst Bucker tones. I prefer the Florentine's looks but it seemed like you could really hear more overall from the BB's. Thanks again for sharing your collection and knowledge. All the work you're doing is appreciated.

The burstbuckers were overall my choice. Burstbucker pros to be exact because there are 4 types at least and they're all different. I think the 57s were the most consistent. I'm thinking I may do a video of three different Paul's with the same pickups and see how close they actually sound!

I am definitely a fan of those Burstbuckers. I’ll take more of everything, please - they’re brilliant! But they all have a great vibe and I can see how they’d all serve a purpose.
I’d love to hear how the Gibson LP Modern stacks up against the Epiphone LP Modern. The Burstbuckers and Probuckers have different specs, but the Probuckers really hold their own with Alnico 2 and 3 magnets - and you’re getting an insane value at $699 (although the tops on the Gibson LP Moderns are ridiculously gorgeous, but the Epiphone still captures a similar vibe). I mean, the Burstbuckers definitely are going to have a bit more oomph and sparkle as I’d guess, but those Probuckers are definite punching well above their $699 price class - especially with orange drops, out of phase push pull, and single coil tones.
Would also be fun to swap pickups from both models to see if the Epiphone would sound like the Gibson and vice versa, lol. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone try that move!
It might be cool to compare similar Gibson and Epiphone models like both Moderns to understand what the differences ultimately sound like. There are lots of brother-sister models from Gibson and Epiphone. Could be fun to try and stack them against each other!

No comparison. The probuckers sound HORRIBLE to my ears. I couldn't stand them on the alex lifeson. That's my big gripe with the lifeson is that it should have had American gibson pickups. There's no contest. Merry Christmas masha!!!

Overall I enjoyed the 57 classics the most, although the burstbuckers were a close second. It would be interesting to see the difference between a 57 and a 57+ pickup. I may be prejudiced against the 490/498 pickups though, they're what came stock in a 2013 lpj that I have, but were mounted with a weird plastic pickup cover that made them look like emgs. I swapped them out for a pair of slashbuckers from a Gibson USA Slash Standard, which are supposed to be a Gibson copy of a Seymour Duncan copy of Gibson PAFs, and they sound so much better than the old pickups in my opinion.

I would have probably told you those were my favorite before this video and go figure they're my least favorite of all of them, although they all sound great. The 57s are def the most consistent. I'm thinking about doing a video with 3 guitars w 57s to see how consistent they actually are, maybe one w 57+. Awesome video! Esp. love the editing - both the cut-ins and the back-to-back comparisons. Would love to hear your thoughts on the different Burstbuckers (ie. 1, 2, 3, Pro and 61s). Generally I liked the sound of the Classic 57s the most, probably because my first experience with hearing a real Gibson was when my buddy rented a Les Paul from Long & McQuade. That guitar had 490s in them (which I later found out from Jim Decola are identical to the Classic 57s - not the 498 though) - and really left a lasting impression on me as to what a premium electric guitar should sound like!

Love jim, he's such a great dude. I have that darkfire that has burstbucker 1s in them. I have 61s in two different les Paul's that are some type of burstbucker. I have another standard with the pros. I'm thinking I need to do a video of three different Paul's with the same pickups to see how close they sound or if u could have one paul w 57s that sounds way better or different than another with the same pickups.

I gotta say Benny: Since day one, I’ve been impressed with your infectious enthusiasm for ALL things Guitar & Music!!! That said: 57 Classics are a solid favorite for many of us-or maybe I should say, those of us old enough to have been thru the gamut!!! BUT, then again, some times, it matters not @ 3:AM when we find ourselves writing the best riffs on the planet-that we can’t quite remember bcuz we forgot to hit The Rec-Button😢😱LOL!!! I also like the Burst-Bucker-Pros as opposed to the first incarnation of Burst-Buckers that weren’t wax-potted -basically bcuz they became microphonic with higher gain settings or high-gain amps!!! - Great episode Benny!!! Keep up the great work brother!!!

I always learn something new. I also dug you vid on trading. Given your experience in trading for gear that can often be targets for counterfeiting or “replicas”. What a fun video Benny. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the 57 Classic. Years ago when I first played them, I started to rip out all of the pickups in my Les Paul & ES-335 guitars & drop those in to them. They made my Gibson & Epiphone's all sound better. Then some years ago Joel at Chicago Music Exchange suggested I give the Lollar low winds a try. Those, are my new favorites! What a tone, love them!! I left the Classic's where they were, but anything new, it's the Lollar's. Then I also tried the Fralin's Pure PAF and I like those too, but those are in just one Les Paul. So, for the purposes of your video, I'll go with the Classic 57's all day long. Again, great video Benny, I appreciate all the time you have invested in your video's!

Great episode, really appreciate your knowledge and hearing the comparisons. Favor, I was watching an episode of Norms rare guitars '1956 Gibson Les Paul Custom | Guitar of the Day - Norman's Birthday!!!' and was blown away by the guitar. It had pickups a pickup in the neck that Id never heard of 'a Staple pickup', that combined with the P90 was magic. Would the Seymour Duncans version give me a similar sound in my 78 Ibanez? 🤔
What do you know mate? Help us out Benny!

Chris, there are ton of factors, so I can't possibly tell ya how it'll sound. I'd say that you should see if you can hear what the pickup sounds like on a similar guitar. I personally love p90s but there's also a bunch of different types at this point. If you like the p90 sound I'd go for it. The stapleback pickuos are supposed to be kinda a hot rod p90, extended highs and lows. I have a pair in my 55 les paul prototype but they were rewired by les. Theyre super cool pickups, you dont see those staplebacks often. And thanks for noticing Chris, I'm literally working full time to pump this out at the highest quality. Considering that the PAFs were designed more or less for Jazz (there was hardly any Hard Rock or Metal around in 1955) they do a pretty good job in the Overdrive/Distortion department! 57 for me please!
On another note: humbucker pickups actually date back farther than you'd think; Electro-Voice made the earliest humbuckers in 1934. Electro-Voice designed the pickups for other audio equipment though, not guitars. Eventually, this idea would inspire Ray Butts of Gretsch and Seth Lover of Gibson to create their own humbuckers.

I liked the 57’s the most. Most punch and most articulation but, the Burstbuckers sounds really nice on the clean examples. Burstbuckers might be the recording guitar and the 57’s are the live performance guitar pickup. The 490 and 498 had this weird scooped thing going on. Not bad on the clean setting but, seemed to have this fizzy sound when you added gain. They’re like a PRS pickup. 🤣🤣🤣
I agree with one of the other viewers that it would be cool to show some Tim Shaws but, Tim Shaw didn’t make the T-Tops. T-Tops and Tarbacks were poopoo pickups and that’s why Gibson hired Tim Shaw to try to recreate the PAF sound. This is why Dimarzio Super distortions got so popular. Tarbacks and T-Tops sucked.
In a nutshell….. all hail the 57 Classics!!

I have t tops in my 74 custom. I have Tim Shaws in a few guitars but not any les Paul's. I think I may have to put three guitars with the same pickups in them against one another to see how consistent the pickup is across the guitar before I even move on!

@elquintoviernesazul I know! In fact, I have guitars with 57s, 57+ and today I found out two have SUPER 57s. So I'll have to do a review of all three against one another. The florentine only has 57s, not a + in the lead. Rock on dude! 🤘

I have 3 LP copies, one with BB2/BB3, one with 57Classic/Classic+ and one with 490R/$98T's. Overall I prefer the 57 classics but the BB2/3's come second

Do you know what the 61s are considered? I read they're burstbuckers but are they 1 2s or3s??? Those 57s are classics for a reason

    • @egnbigdave
      @egnbigdave 6 місяців тому

@@TheNeuroticGuitarist What I read was the 61s have more winds on the screw bobbin, the BB Pro's have more on the slug coil. Prehaps thats just how they made the 60's originals. What difference it makes I don't know. I find the 490/498 combo a bit overpowering - almost DiMarzio Superdistortion like (used to have one of those in an Adrian Smith Jackson). I should have gone for the BB1/2 combo over 2/3, but the set that came up were gold plated and the guitar they have gone in is a LP Custom copy that is black with all gold hardware. As you said though the 57's are a good allround pair
