Alexander Hammid is rarely mentioned, but he and Maya Deren were partners who co-wrote and co-directed the many amazing and impactful films now enjoyed by younger generations. Hammid performed the cinematography as well.
My thoughts exactly 💯
She's amazing, I agree with her theory
This is the reason I’ve (post) scored her films with my music. Her sense of time and movement in film is incredible.
Great video. I have never studied Deren in depth or read her essays, but there are a lot of things you point out which must have had great influence on Brakhage as well, especially amateurism and the hand-held camera. Thanks for bringing some light on where these ideas come from.
Thank you for sharing your essay here on UA-cam so we can all learn from it. Much appreciated!
Thanks for highlighting these features of Deren's film philosophy. I really enjoyed it and feel the same way about feel.
This channel is single-handedly saving me from my classical theory class. It summarizes the ideas really well into a short and concise way. Bless this channel lol

Thanks, very cool. I got introduced to Maya Deren by my daughter who is a student at FIT, and now am obsessed with her. Thank you again.
Really eye opening video. Thank you so much.
Universal concepts till this day, but hate when an artist is so ahead of their time, they pay the price.
If only they had crowd sourcing during that era. Such passion!

4:53 Is that Anaïs Nin?
Yes, she was in Ritual in a Transfigured time. There were a number of artists of note in the party scene in that movie, they were Daren's friends in the 1940s.
I wish I could have my phone what is amazing The world is never transfixed it’s the dance always. e
Genius
She was smart.
