And there's something about puppets that CGI can't ever do and that's create something that you forget isn't real. Yes its nice and clean and smooth, but that feels so plastic. It's harder to empathize with something you know you can't reach out and touch. I think CGI is constantly striving for that authenticity that practical effects have.

Eh disagree, cgi still looks in many movies draedfull.Jurassic Park looked great but that was a mix of cgi and practical effects like the Batmna trilogy. The cgi ET looked more like a cartoon figure then an alien and the director´s cut was a step down also according to Spielberg.
Cgi effects still looks fake in most pictures(Dawn off the planet off the apes was praised for its effects but i lost interest when i first saw the apes, truly horrible!)
Even more then twenty years after Jurassic Park cgi has not greatly improved(look at the new Ghostbusters film,it looks like a b movie!).Other cgi bombs include Avatar(looks great but feels like a lavish cartoon with a inferior script and stereo typical characters)Pearl Harbor(most Bay movies)Indiana Jones and the kongdom off the Crystal Skull. There are a few movies with good cgi effects but the majority is awfull.
i still prefer the old fashion practical effects over cgi with movies that still hold up these days like the original Ghostbusters,ET,Poltergeist(1982 offcourse)Close Encounters off the third Kind and the Evil Dead trilogy.
The best cgi effect is a cgi effect that does not look like a cgi effect.

It's sad cgi has erased a lot of the ingenuity, and craftsmanship in movies.

Chris Gregg not all of it - I remember hearing that in episodes 7 and 8 of Star Wars, some puppets were actually used - and created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop!

Nowadays everything is computer 3D, where is the hand-made stuff like this?? Nothing against the 3d artist but we need to keep the hand-made artistic techniques alive.

I don't think its the needs of the consumer that have made CGI more popular, I think its a lot of the film makers today that choose CGI because its quick and easy and at times cheaper. Instead of having to wait for a character to be built and having to spend at least a full day filming it maybe even more, the director can just hand it off to the CGI department and deal with it later and move on to what they believe is more important things. Cause there are tons of film makers and movies that still utilize a lot of classic techniques and still have movie goers coming to see their films. Tarantino is known for avoiding CGI as much as possible and his movies have not suffered from it. I still think CGI is useful and important, but its become such a crutch to a lot of film makers. Truth is if you do your practical stuff well, consumers won't care or notice the difference. I'd personally prefer it if practical was used the majority of the time and CGI only be used where its absolutely needed (cause sometimes, let's face it, there are some things puppeteers, designers, and make up artists just can't do)

Puppetry and CGI both take skill, talent, and creativity to do, the important thing is doing it WELL, and with CGI, the fact that you needn't use expensive materials just opens it up to just about everybody.
Using puppets just seems to make certain mistakes far more forgivable, but they do have a quality that CGI can't easily match.

Isnt it crazy to think in the end, Mickey Mouse and Kermit are hanging out in the lunch room, since Disney owns all of it now.

Possibly consumer preference. It is kind of a lost artform and I think publishers really killed it thinking people would prefer CGI. But, like you, give me puppet Yoda any day! Dark Crystal to me is still a real piece of art... LoTR was another type of art (CGI) that melded reality perfectly with CGI. But, puppets... true art form.

why not instead appreciate and value the original? Why is it every movie needs to be remade?

They're even using CGI to touch up regular actors and actresses, trying them look "beautiful". No, no, no. The CGI touch ups on real actors and actresses only makes them look like Uncanny valley Barbie and Ken dolls. People have gone too hog wild on making a film seem "flawless" and "pretty to look at". Where is the plots and character development?
