if your looking to put together an AR with the purpose of mounting an optic i would suggest either using a barrel chambered in 223 wylde. It allows the safe use of both 223 and 556 in that rifle. Maybe an 16-18" barrel for better muzzle velocity, and a 1-8 or 1-10 LPVO (low powered variable optic). I built an AR10 chambered in 6.5cm with a 22" barrel, which should be supersonic beyond 1300 yards. You can do whatever you want with ARs.
I haven’t seen a .223 remington chambered AR barrel in an extremely long time. You will see receivers marked “.223” like on the Tavor but the barrel is cut for 5.56

Speaking as someone who owns both ARs and an SKS, go with an AR build. For the amount of money you'll spend building out an SKS, you can get a decent AR easily. Palmetto State Armory runs sales almost daily, and their rifles are plenty good, running about $600 on sale (you can also get a kit for about $300 where you buy the lower separately - don't worry, it's like lego bricks. Easy peasy!). It's perfectly serviceable and you will likely go years before you are capable of out-shooting the rifle. If you want a do-everything gun that will last your lifetime, get a PSA PA-15, swap out the stock barrel for a 20 inch FN barrel with a 1:7 twist rate, Magpul sling, Magpul flip-up sights, and a Primary Arms 5x36mm SLx optic up top for distance shooting. Grab a dozen PMAGs for $100 on sale. All told and buying on the very frequent sales, you can spend less than $1500 and get a perfectly serviceable, do-everything gun with magazines. As for the barrel, gamers will tell you you can't clear a room with a 20 inch barrel, but a friend of mine cleared houses in Fallujah with an M240B and it worked perfectly fine, and 20 inches means you can really reach out and touch something.
SKS make great scout rifles. The trick is to mount the long eye relief pistol type scope where the gas block/gas piston is. There are kits, or ask a gunsmith. That way you can still use stripper clips. Peace!

I've fired a lot of 5.56 with my time in the Army and have to admit my .308 rifle is much more fun. Ammo is a little more money with an AR10 but its worth it. 1800$ rifle I got on sale for 1200$. Fired perfectly right out of the box with zero lube added. Cleaned and inspected with zero wear after 250 rounds in one day. Had to recommend.
I have an SKS D and yes, you can find scope mounts at Brownells, etc, and bullpup stocks at CBRPS. Cheap and fun to shoot. Looking to move up to K&M M17S in .308.😉
5.56 can be pretty loud out of a shorter barrel, with a 20" barrel it's really not very loud at all You should totally build and ar15, they are cheaper than sks's these days, even if you build a pretty nice one. There are chassis and other scope mounts for the sks but personally I think they do best stock.
Busting out the mosin at the shooting range when everyone is firing pistol calibers is so real XD especially indoor. Except my "mag" door spring is week or something cus every time I shoot the bottom door opens and all my ammo falls out so now its kind of a single shot mosin
If you want shooting just for the fun of it, you can also get yourself a 300 BLK build with silencer and some 2x-4x scope.300 BLK is subsonic and okay up to 200 yards.
It's kinda funny how the 57mm autocannon produces so much smoke, noise and sets the enemy under preasure that they often times just randomly shoot in your direction and miss and that is obviously a death sentence. 5:35
For an AR build, I have a Ruger SFAR in 308, and it's the lightest and most mean AR10 on the market. It's lighter than the POF AR10 and shoots like an AR15. You can shoot it one-handed, think about that! I pair mine with a Vortex 4.7 power scope and have a red dot to swap. I might get an under mount laser/light combo. idk. But it's definitely an amazing combo build.
The sks is a 3-5 moa rifle. If you can’t keep it within that group size, a scope isn’t going to help you or improve that. They do sell scope kits for them. They aren’t going to be all that accurate because the rifle wasn’t designed for scope use and does not have any solid points to attach the scope aside from the rear sight. At that point you’re limited to using a long eye relief scope.
I remember when I first saw this tank in Armored Warfare many many years ago, I instantly fell in love with its look and high caliber auto cannon combined with missile launcher. Then when it was added to WarThunder a few years later I was so happy that it's a good and fun tank in this game too. It's just straight up a fun tank no matter what game it will be I think, due to the design of the tank, it can do anything. Shoot down planes, kill lights, kill Mbts... Well it can't take a shot back that well though.
Man, such a blast to hear phly talking about what rifle he has and what he wants. Get yourself a nice AR and keep the sks the way it is (assuming it is stock). I live in europe where it isn't really a "get what you want" kind of situation. It is actually kind of hard to get any weapon in my country - so even though I would really want something like the SKS I've had to "settle" on two AR15s in the rifle department for now.
I think we need to link Phly up with Brandon Herrera or Kentucky Ballistics...... 5.56 ARs can be loud with the right brake, but, wow, this man has some learnin to do LOL
They sell a ton of after market kits for the sks even good bullpup conversion kits. It’s accurate enough at a few hundred yards you could put a decent scope on it but I wouldn’t put any long range equipment on it.
I think "within or below," in War Thunder context makes sense... they can be either above you and out of range or beyond your range in the horizontal so... Yer good, Phly :D... Also, accurate rifle/pistol range comparison, lol
They sell brackets for the sks that adapt your iron sight mounting spots into a mount for a scope i think? Ours is a 60s yugoslavian one and the iron sights are apparently able to range to over 1000 meters
There is a company called Archangel that makes some after market stuff for an SKS that is pretty sweet. All modular, mounting rails, pistols grips etc.

11:14 Phly casually looking away as soon as he comes around the corner
I remember when Begleit was 8.7.... wish it was still there... It was badass.
You're doing a million dollar job. Keep it up. This is the way
Trying so hard not to nerd out about guns! big gun enthusiasts here! range burnn out is a real thing! how you fight it is either with friends, range and accuracy, orrrrr self defense training!
Yes they have a kit that gets rid of the wood and gives a pistol grip and rails for SKS
“Oh no! Anyway...” got a chuckle outta. Me
Love the Clarkson cameo!
My advice on the SKS is leave it alone because if you ever sell it it’s worth more original
13:16 steve won't show us to see his after-screams lmao :D i can't imagine the fury he unleashes afterwards
I love the alarm going off in the background at 9:50
Yes they sell rails that attach to the rear sight block for scopes
I'm running a Stag Arms Stag 10 and so far its been absolutely perfect. I'm using a Primary Arms LPVO which is easy to use at 100 yards.
*7.62X39 - The R your thinking of is from that Mosin you talked about, 7.62X54R
I have an SKS D and yes, you can find scope mounts at Brownells, etc, and bullpup stocks at CBRPS. Cheap and fun to shoot. Looking to move up to K&M M17S in .308.😉
"writing down another vehicle I have to try"
Thanks for posting!
Phly, you do realize the bagel has thermals and laser rangefinder, right?
5.56 can be pretty loud out of a shorter barrel, with a 20" barrel it's really not very loud at all
You should totally build and ar15, they are cheaper than sks's these days, even if you build a pretty nice one.
There are chassis and other scope mounts for the sks but personally I think they do best stock.
Busting out the mosin at the shooting range when everyone is firing pistol calibers is so real XD especially indoor. Except my "mag" door spring is week or something cus every time I shoot the bottom door opens and all my ammo falls out so now its kind of a single shot mosin
nothing is funnier than a perfectly cut Phlydaily scream
If you want shooting just for the fun of it, you can also get yourself a 300 BLK build with silencer and some 2x-4x scope.300 BLK is subsonic and okay up to 200 yards.
That 5.56 was loud because the guy was running a muzzle break. Sends the gases to the sides therefore making it loud for the neighbors.
Shoot some full pop cans with hollow point rounds it's the most fun you can have
It's kinda funny how the 57mm autocannon produces so much smoke, noise and sets the enemy under preasure that they often times just randomly shoot in your direction and miss and that is obviously a death sentence. 5:35
Researched the BMP 2M and as a 7.3 player so far, I agree.
NO GO ABOVE 9.3 or at least until you have a full 9.3 lineup
For an AR build, I have a Ruger SFAR in 308, and it's the lightest and most mean AR10 on the market. It's lighter than the POF AR10 and shoots like an AR15. You can shoot it one-handed, think about that! I pair mine with a Vortex 4.7 power scope and have a red dot to swap. I might get an under mount laser/light combo. idk. But it's definitely an amazing combo build.
Man, wish I could even find an SFAR. I got their AR-556 and it's a lovely rifle.
My man, there is a HEAP of Aftermarket chassis and conversion kits to make them lighter, or sporterized/shortened, to add rails, optics, etc.
As soon as banks is old enough, I better start seeing some father-son gameplay.
not this dude having a blast in test drive
Just worked my way to the puma yesterday gotta say its refreshing not having to worry about reload with a .3 reload
I highly recommend getting some steel targets. Hearing the bullet hit the steel is vary satisfying
Watching your videos always makes me want to play War Thunder. Thank you man, you're the best!
Yea I shot 556x45 in the military. It was very loud, especially in indoor ranges... Everybody has to wear ear protection.
I think we need to link Phly up with Brandon Herrera or Kentucky Ballistics...... 5.56 ARs can be loud with the right brake, but, wow, this man has some learnin to do LOL
Bro did a quagmire nooo during the drone part 😂
Hey about your sks question! You can get whats called a “sight mount” for about $20-$50, they make them for ak platforms as well!
pro tip! Put at HE VT rounds as #1 so you get them back first when rearming at a cap
You will not believe the amount of aftermarket there is for the SKS. New stocks, top mount and sidemount optics and sights, supressors etc
Pray for Phly, it won't be War Thunder or planes that will bankrupt him, it'll be SKS ammunition
they do sell sks scope mounts and scopes you'll need to find the one that best suits you though
