Awesome set of videos- Very easy to follow and I sorted my 44" TV that had been sat in my garage for a year. Cost me 59 pence for a new 1000uF capacitor and 40 minutes work. Awesome. Cannot thank you enough.Just awesome.

You saved me 1,000 bucks. My better half was all set to buy a 60 inch Sony before I fixed our 52" for $5 in capacitors. Well done, good job.

These how to videos are awesome!!! Now, as an electronics engineer with over 30 years experience in several industries including consumer video electronics, I’ll point out a very key missing point regarding the caps. The failure mode is outgassing due to overheating hence the swelling and bulging - no surprise as most know. And, true, replacement caps are easily available. But here’s what I want everyone to know and it is not being mentioned on these how to sites. The problem with the caps as you might imagine are that they are cheap, Chinese supplier go figure. The reason these caps overheat is they are as this video explains, are used to filter fluctuations on switching power supplies. so what occurs is what we call ripple currents. I will simplify Ohm’s Law by restating that voltage equals current times resistance, but what is that play in these failures is the fact that there are time varying currents i.e., the ripple currents flowing continuously through the capacitors
due to the switching mode operation of the power supplies. so, now the problem with this. no electrical component has ideal properties in the real world. let’s keep it to the discussion of capacitors. capacitors have what’s called equivalent series resistance. as with the operation of space heaters we know that resistance with current flooring through it will result in heat. so overtime this ripple current flowing through the parasitic ESR of the capacitors will continuously generate heat which in turn causes the electrolytic material to outgas and eventually bulges the capacitor and it loses its capacitance characteristics. in the complement industry for electro lytic capacitors there are specialize capacitors they cost a bit more but they have very low ESR. in safety critical applications Mike automotive and dustrial and avionics it is absolutely important to select low ESR electrolytic capacitors.
so, after seeing these how to saying go out and get replacement capacitors I have waited long enough to hear someone mention that the selection should be to get low ESR electrolytic capacitors. to put it in real terms I repaired our Sam song back in 2009 with low ESR electrolytic capacitors and have not had a problem since. A friend of mine did he is independent of consulting me and he had to go back in and replace them after about three years. by that time I got wind of his reoccurrence and got him some low ESR electrolytic capacitors. so my suggestion to the creators of all how to videos for this problem is to please guide people toward low ESR electrolytic capacitors and not just a garden-variety replacement. good luck off.

Hi there, what is classed as a low ESR electrolytic capacitor? Just opened up my Samsung le40n87bd as I'd thought I'd have a go at the clicking issue and the capacitors genuinely look fine.

absolutely correct 100%, for the cost difference of low ESR capacitors and a respected name you will never have to go back in. Although all of these DIY video's are fabulous this important point is never mentioned, people tend to lean toward the product that there is no built-in insurance policy with...

Sub'd..great video. I have electronic s tech degree that I never get to use and live in an upper scale apartment complex where people just leave their TV's by the dumpster if they either move or have an issue with them. I think I'm up to around 4 TV's so far this year. The latest has this same issue.

Really great and informative video! I woke up to my tv clicking on and off. I was able to sort it out, at least for now, by unplugging it for a couple minutes. Still, I wanted to see if this is a common issue and plan ahead just in case. Thanks so much for a how-to that isn’t obnoxious, overly technical or boring.

excellent job showing what your doing and what the problems can be. And please don't be mad about Samsung and capacitors, most do not have this problem, and many don't have it for a very long time. Plus its easy to fix. I've had my current tv for a good 5+ years, and only recently has it had this problem, and currently its an easy problem because without even replacing stuff you can simply blow a hair dryer in the vent of the tv to heat up the capacitors fast for the tv to work fine, The more capacitors that fail the longer the tv clicks/to warm up and come on. If you know of a local repair shop you can just take the board to them they can soder in/out new capacitors for cheap.

Thank you for this very helpful video. I’m not very handy when it comes to things like this. But I’m going to give it a try. I just had one question that I’m hoping you could answer that may narrow down the cause of my on/off issue. My set does not click on/off immediately. I’ve been timing it and it seems to turn off than back on every 4-5 minutes. In your experience does that lead you to think it’s one issue over another? Thanks again for your helpful video!

Thanks for the reply, I wonder if it is worth replacing the sustain boards, and I was confused to find a Tcon board on a plasma TV, I was not aware they had them now. It is an October 2009 unit. I guess if the sustain boards are cheap enough, it might be worth the expense. the TV was free. Any words of wisdom or videos that would pertain to this unit or one very much like it to help me a little to verify which sustain board it might be. I am a notice at testing components on boards. Great video: Have similar problem on a Samsung PS59D555. Clicking noise no picture. Disconnected Y and X board, still clicking... Attached Y and X and measured STB as you suggest. Should be 5.1 V. When I measure it to 5.3 V the clicking stops and the TV "boots" and the start image appears on the screen. When I remove the multimeter from then pin the picture disapear, and the clicking starts again.
Suggestions? Is it mostl likely the Power supply or the Main board?

I need help. I opened up my Samsung expecting to see bad capacitors, but they are fine.
problems first started with the dvd player not working using the side inlets, then it didn't work pluging them in the back. All of a sudden we had to deal with a loud, long ringing beep with static for a picture before it would clear to normal. Then it started turning off and on, with the noise and static.
I still have a standby light so I am hoping it is fixable. please help.

Tampatec very much enjoy your vids. I have a Samsung TV 50" I think it is 50". I will not be using it as a tv. The black screen was broken. The tv was left here when we bought the house. I took out the black screen and will be using it as a light for my electronics bench in the garage. It turns on and in about 15 seconds it will turn off. Would this be the same issue you described in the video?
    Any help would be great.
Oh it does not power on and off. When I turn it on in 15 seconds it turns off.

Hey hey! :-). I have a Samsung Smart 3D tv model un46f6400 that power cycles, won't stay turned on. Power supply when unplugged from mainboard, works fine, lights up backlights n all. Plug mainboard back in, cycles with 5 flashes. T-con, plugged or unplugged makes no difference. I did check the cable that runs from the power supply to the mainboard and it's fine. In my head, this all tells me it's the mainboard? Or is that too obvious and it can still be something else?

Hey Tampatec. Love the Videos, very informative. I have a Samsung UN46D6500vfxzc TV here that is doing something similar. The TV is rebooting it's self, after about 5 minutes or so. 2 things to note. 1. Before it happens, the remote stops working, as do the input keys, sometimes 30+ seconds before it reboots, ( IR and input board is connected off the main board), and 2, the clicking is cumming from the power supply relay, That maintains 5v. Everything else goes to 0 when it reboots. This tells me that something is 'telling' the TV to reboot. From what i have read, this is a very common problem with these Samsung smart TV's. There are no bulged capacitors on the PSU. Do you have any recommendations, short of replacing the PSU? Thanks !

Do you have a good source for capacitor kits? The kits on eBay don't include the one I need. Seems crazy to pay for shipping from Digikey for a single part, and in any event, they don't even seem to have the one I need 450v, 470uf, 35mm diameter max, 26mm high max, radial lead, electrolytic.

I have a similar issue with our philips tv's, many of them all doing the same thing as this but with some differences. I wonder if it would still be the same diagnosis, I will use these tips to troubleshoot, thanks. The problem is the tv stays on just fine until you change the channel, then it freezes, picture goes into static horizontal lines for a sec then shuts down and restarts. What do you think about this.

I have a TCL LE55FHDF3300ZTAAA My TV started turning itself off from time to time, then more frequenlty sometimes it would sit a hour or so and then it would work again, then recently a day or so and it would work for a while. when it turns off standby light always comes on. When it does work the picture is always clear no lines or distortion. I've seen this model TV also in a Sanyo with the same boards. Any help if it is the T-con or the mainboard? or at least which one I can try 1st

You should make clear whether you are talking about STDBY voltage OFF or STDBY voltage ON as I have steady voltage when the TV is off which you seem to be showing but that voltage fluctuates when ON so now this video has confused me about whether I should be focusing on the Main board or power board. By this video, it would seem that only OFF is the test for steady STDBY voltage then you automatically move to replace the Main board. Is that the correct take away from this?

So I tired to bring up the menu with the remote and the only thing that happens is that the light flashes on the bottom right corner. So I see that it's doing something but still no picture or sound. I removed the back panel and check the fuses and the caps but they all check out good and the rest of the boards so no signs of damage. So any suggestion would be appreciated.

My Samsung UN58H5202AF isn't really clicking on and off but it appears to be stuck in a reboot loop. I will turn it on and see the Smart Tv logo but then after a minute or two it reboots again. It also gets to a point were the remote is non responsive as well. If I want to change the input source or try pulling up the menu I have to do it right away. However, the screen usually goes a bit garbled and then shortly after reboots. I called Samsung but it was 16 days past it's 1 year warranty so they won't help me. It's a tv in a room where we hardly watch tv so it seriously only has like 40 hours of watch time on it. Should I just try a shotgun approach and order the repair kit for $59.95 from shopjimmy? I do know how to solder and change capacitors etc... if there is a cheaper and easier solution. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Thanks! Robert

Hey Paul, I have a weird issue here. I have a samsung un50nu6900fxza and it was working great until it just started switching on and off. The standby light kept flickering. So I went to lift the tv up then realized it stayed on. After a little troubleshooting I realized that if I disconnected the ir sensor the tv stays on. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

THANK YOU! Video and Website solved it! Put in the new power board and good to go. Probably could have changed the capacitors for cheaper, but the board was easier!

Thanks bro I have a 55 inch Samsung and when I hit the power button the blue light by the switch flashes on a relay clicks and the light goes out. I found a bad capacitor and fuse on power board , replaced them and still does the same . When I remove the logic board connector from the power board
And plug it in to wall outlet , I can hear the tv relay click and when the logic board is connected at plug in the relay does not click. I believe there's a short on the logic board ..

Hello, I have a samsung tv ln52a750r1f, it turns on for a few seconds then off for another seconds and same thing all over and over, I already change the capacitors all of them but the problem continues. Do you think it's the main board?

How do you discharge the capacitors on the boards? Don't modern tv's still have some quite high voltages stored in capacitors?

    • @TampaTec
      @TampaTec  8 років тому +1

+gartmorn most techs i know don't because they know how to avoid touching the pins of the big caps.

I'm an electrical fitter and like you avoid large caps but not all diy type youtubers know to avoid them! The reason I mentioned it is because your vids seem to be aimed at all levels including novices. I love what you're doing btw!

Hi there's is wax liquid draining from part number capacitor 222ks630v np.b48pp , i have no picture and clicking sound what could cause this?

to discharge the capacitors if you don't know how, simply unplug your tv for a few days it will drain the main ones. You don't have to worry about small capacitors, but the big ones its easy if you don't know the quick ways. Just unplug everything, in a day or 2, fine to handle.
