    Thanks Brandon. Great suggestion-- it worked really well. The box is a standard letter/legal banker's storage box, 15 x 12 x 10 , as I was a bit confused when I couldn't find the Staples brand. I found a 10 pack at Walmart for $19. Thanks again!!

    Btw- you don’t have to trim the excess flap material with the box handle in it. You can fold them over the full box of CD’s before placing the cover in. Whats good about this is that you can remove the cover, fold them open, and use the handles!

    Thanks so much. I searched for plastic or cardboard CD storage and found nothing suitable. I was storing them in similar bankers boxes, but not cut down, so they were 2 CD's high, and you could not access the bottom ones easily. The boxes even protected the CDs in my damp basement. This is just perfect. It even eliminates the hand holes which were letting in humidity. And half the weight!

      Yeah I tried the double stacked CDs too but also you couldn’t see the name on the spine because they had to be turned in the long direction to fit. So that’s why I came up with this. And like you said it’s lighter too! I hope it works well for you.

    Hi Brendan. My available display space is taken up by my 6.500 LPs, so I am left with having to store my approximately 8,000 CDs in a number of 64 or 56 liter plastic tote boxes in the basement. I can fit about 300 CDs in each tote. I try to keep them organized by genre and alphabetically within the genre, but I sometimes give up. I have to store the totes in our unfinished basement because of lack of display space in the house. They are stackable and the plastic material and tight lids protect the CDs from moisture, mice, dust, or any other threats. When I want to listen to my CDs, I blindly choose a box and listen to the CDs in it for about 2 to 4 weeks, and in the process rediscover many forgotten gems. The downside is that I do not know where a specific CD is stored. I will have to reorganize them so that they are completely in order within each tote. That will be a big project!

    • @cameronzywina906
      @cameronzywina906 3 роки тому

      Hi Brendan, I forgot to ask you how you organize CDs within each box. By genre? Alphabetically? How do you find a specific Cd that has been stored within one of about 100 boxes?

    I use this system for my overflow, but I don’t really like it because I have to dig through stacks to get what I want and everything’s out of sight (I often choose what to listen to by perusing the collection). But once you hit your space limit, something like this is pretty much your only option.

    Great video. As someone who works in the corrugated packing industry, it's kind of cringey to see all those blisters on the inside of the box. The glue that holds everything together is starch and it can get a bit brittle if things are not done right. At the point of purchase, just give the corner of each box a twist to make sure there's no snap-crackle-pop. I used boxes like this to store my lesser-listened CDs - but I made my own! :) It's worth repeating the point about the knife: There's nothing more dangerous than using a dull knife to cut this material + go slowly. *Sharp and slow is the way to go.*

    The equivalent at OfficeDepot/Max is Item # 1493371 (Banker's Box 10x12x15). It worked great. I find the spacing gives me 87 CD's per box, not 90. I don't want them that tight. I cut mine to 6 inches, which literally gives me 1/8 inch clearance on the box. My collection ran to 12 boxes with a little bit of space, because, yeah, sorting and grouping is going to be a problem. This video gets a thumbs up.

    • @rodholland4186
      @rodholland4186 3 роки тому

      @@BrendonSnyder This is my mod of your method. It's 8 miles to Staples and 3.5 to OfficeMax, and their price was cheaper. I could force 30 CD's per row, depending, I just found it a bit tight. Then there's double CD albums... and you have to leave space if you buy another disc that goes in the "M"'s , ... etc. Having seen the age of LP's go (still got 200) and seeing the age of CD's slipping out the door, I wanted a reasonable, inexpensive method to store my CD's. I thought about boxes out of plywood (I have tools...), but I decided that wouldn't be the best use of time. Your solution fit perfectly.

    Hi Brendon, I was wondering since you have so many boxes of cd's do you have them stored in alphabetical order or do you remember exactly where every cd you want to listen to which box there in? Thank you! Stephen

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  4 роки тому +6

      I do remember where they are and to make it easier I do two things. The first is yes, it’s alphabetized but only grouped by letter. Like all G’s are together but I don’t worry about Ga coming before or after Gr, etc. It makes it easier to add in new CDs. The second is that I break them down by genera. So I have a group of boxes that is Rock, one for Hair Bands, Heavy Metal, Alternative and then Prog Rock. This helps narrow the search considerably.

    • @BrendonSnyder

      It’s just a memory thing. The stack on the right contains all of one genre and the top box starts with A and the last box ends with Z. Then I just go down how ever many boxes I need until I hit the letter I want. But that’s the extent of how I locate things. Fairly easy for me.

I wonder how your solution compares with expensive "barrier board" boxes sold by companies like Bags Unlimited"? I'm getting ready to preserve some M-disc media, so I want a solution that will match the tens to hundreds of years survivability of M-disc. Of course, I will likely use your Staples box solution for regular CDs and DVDs. On further tip, get some pieces of wood or particle board shelving to place on concrete floors (basements and storage units) beneath the bottom box to prevent water damage due to condensation.

    I have over 16,000 CDs including several hundred box sets of various sizes all in one room and all on display with easy access to every title. Everything is in alphabetical order. I also organize each artist in order of original release date oldest to newest within the alphabetical order. Every spine is viewable. I custom built standard CD jewel case size shelving along each wall from floor to 10’ ceiling with the reachable top shelves deeper that are deep enough to hold any oversize box set. The box sets follow alphabetically by artist the standard jewel case CDs below them - all the way around the room. I added controllable lighting in eight sets around the room so that every title is lit and easily readable. The room is large enough to include on one end a top end audio system with 18 different playback and recording formats that are controlled in a central mix system. My 8,000 vinyl albums and 45’s are housed in this floor to ceiling system cabinet. At the other end of the room a current vintage large widescreen offers glorious video with awesome surround sound. My many music videos flank the big screen TV. The head in the system sends audio to all rooms of my three story home as well as to all sides of the exterior of my home so that I can hear audio anywhere in my yard and garden. I have a custom German handmade 9.2 surround system in this studio room as well as stereo or surround in all of the rooms of my home. Been collecting since I was five starting in 1964 with “Introducing The Beatles”. May sound like a brag. Not my intention. I am a music nut like the rest of you and I assembled this piece by piece over these many years and I chose a profession in the pro audio industry that gave me the contacts and the means for assembling what I have today. I haven’t many years left but I will enjoy what is to come. Thank you for reading this.

      I was at the Staples store locally and they still carried the original boxes which are the generic store brand. But they also carry the newer name brand boxes. But as long as you buy a box called “banker” style it will work. Banker boxes are a standard dimension so any will work.

      The basic Staples box that I used is only 10” tall so it would not fit a vinyl. I do collect vinyl but on a much smaller scale. I mostly collect vinyls that have never been issued to cassette/CD or streaming. Otherwise I’ll purchase a CD version.

    Brendon, How are you? I needed to ask you for some advice. I'm having fun making the boxes for my cd collection. It works great for the normal jewel case cds. I can easily fit 3 across to ultimately get 90 cds in a box. However, I'm having some difficulty with the non jewel case cds. Most digi packs are the same size, however, many digi packs come in slightly larger sizes. I'm trying to keep my collection in alphabetical order, but the size differences is making difficult to do that. I'm sure you have encountered the same problem? How do you make it work? Thanks! Rick

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 роки тому

      Yeah that has caused a bit of an issue in being able to store things together. I have a lot of ways I store and I adjust accordingly. For the bulk of stuff I use the white boxes. Then I also have boxes that hold 30 CDs that came from record stores as the boxes CDs are shipped in. I use those to hold complete collections by one artist. The boxes vary slightly and so I’ve got some wider ones that I’ll use when I’ve got an artist light Neil Young who has released many different size digi-pack cases. Also I’ve got that CD wall behind me and the very top is used for limited and deluxe editions that don’t fit with their respective artist sections but I use it more like a display for them. I also have bookshelves that serve the same purpose. So not the best solution but that’s how I deal with it.

      @@BrendonSnyder Thanks for the info! I might just separate the standard jewel case cds from the non standard digi packs into different boxes. I'll have to experiment with the project to see how that works out. Have a great day!

      They’re standard “banker” style boxes. If you can’t find the model number the simply look for a banker style box. That is the name of this box.

  • @YouTougle
    @YouTougle Рік тому

    How sturdy are these when stacked? 90 CDs is about 9Kg based on the average 100g per Jewel case weight, which means the bottom box of a 3-high stack is under 18Kg. Have you found any problems in regards to that? If those boxes in the background are full then I suspect not as they are about 10 boxes high.
    I didn't realise how heavy CDs were until I filled a much bigger storage box with them and then couldn't move it. Storing them in smaller boxes is perfect if they can handle the load.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  Рік тому +1

      It’s the CD case that is actually the “sturdy” part. The cardboard is not doing the supporting. Yes I’ve stacked 12 boxes high and it’s a lot of weight but never had any damage to the CDs.

    I also prefer store cds in boxes, rather than exposed shelves but, is a pain on the ass take a cd from, by example I see on the back left that you have 10 boxes!!! one in the top of the other, so just try to get one cd from box #2 on the bottom, you need remove 8 boxes from the top. At this point it seems boxes are for people that never listen the cds and just want storage.
