I met Jen through my best friend Darren in Australia when she made her comeback. She used to call him her lucky charm. She had a beautiful soft character off the court and was a fierce warrior on the court. I was fortunate enough to escort Darren to the tennis and witnessed her first Australian open win and then her second the year after. She even took us all out to dinner with her family and team to celebrate. At the time I had no idea about her journey up until that point. Looking back on it all I now fully comprehend just what an unbelievable comeback story it was. Goosebumps. Darren passed away from cancer at the age of 25.

Cade, Jennifer is a wonderful person. Sounds like you had a wonderful day and evening, with the Capriati's and her tennis team I was going thru some dark days when Capriati was a star .Her determination and fight was inspiring, her determination to succeed is inspiring. I was fortunate to get a selfie with her. I wish her the best in her retirement.

Jennifer Capriati wasn't just a tennis champion. She had fighting qualities and a good heart .
She fought hard in all her matches and fought to the end.
She inspired me to carry on and helped me through some tough times.
I am grateful to have watched her play and got the opportunity to meet her at the Australian Open.
Wishing her the best in her retirement.

I understand what he is saying because I used to play and watch Tennis back then but the idea in the movie was how what happened to Jennifer impacted Richard’s decision to hold his daughters back from competition. The movie was about the Williams sister but more so about Richard. Coach Macci is a total sweetheart and he is right I remember her comeback. Jennifer was a fire cracker on the court.

I'm not an athlete, nor any of my family but hearing you speak, I know that you are a wonderful coach. Kids can and do hit bumps in the road, and they recover. Jennifer is living proof. Her story is inspiring. What a dirty trick, Richard Williams pulling the rug out from under your feet.

I agree, I have a high level of respect for Rick Macci. Richard was a great dad and sacrificed a lot for his children but really cheated Rick out. Rick gambled on the Williams family without any guarantee that anything would come out of it. When the girls did become successful, Rick was cut of of the scene. Richard on the other hand demanded only his way, it was his way or the highway no matter how much Rick went out of his way to help. In the end, I'm happy for the girls. I could not live with myself if my business dealings were dishonest like that.

@@hanhb6047 Rick wasn't cut out of the scene, he was offered $1 million a year to coach the girls full time after Venus got her Reebok contract. Rick didn't want to leave teaching at his academy, so they went back and forth for 2 years trying to come to an agreement. Rick said this out of his own mouth, might wanna do a little research.

I agree w Rick, they should hav put up a few clips of Jenn during the final credits of saying what she did to come back, they do it in all true story movies, they put up updates of all the characters portrayed, they shouldn’t have done it in King Richard also……….. they owed it to Capriati, they painted her as the cautionary tale, and yes she was at first, but like Rick says you get a second chance sometimes and Jennifer made the best of hers.

But it didnt really fit. The movie left off with Venus at about 14 years old. Jennifer has just gotten into trouble and didnt yet make her comeback. Plus, the movie was about the Williams family, not Jennifer.

You did an honorable thing here Rick. You can't talk about Jennifer Capriati's career and leave out her amazing comeback at a time when women's tennis was at its most competitive. I haven't seen King Richard but I am shocked that they used the mug shot without telling the rest of her triumphant story: #1 in the world, 3 grand slams... most tennis players will be lucky to reach the top 50 on the pro tour. Thanks for this!

If you watch the movie you would understand why her problems were highlighted. It was a big factor in Richard’s decision not to push his daughters out too early. The move was about the Williams sisters and mostly really about the role their dad played in their rise. I’m sure people will look up Jennifer and learn more about her Victories as well from watching the movie.

Capriati has a remarkable story but a movie about the Williams Sisters did NOT owe Jennifer a followup. The point was her rise came first at Macci’s Academy and her teenage burnout fiasco was a catalyst in Richard & Oracene sticking to their plan to take it slow with Venus & Serena. That message was clearly conveyed.

True, the movie was about the Williams but in all fairness you "used" her name to make a point......
And it would have been "decent" to 'at least ' mention that, that was not the sum total of what happened.
Meaning to take a 'kid's' troubled few years w/o acknowledging her come back can be seen as messy....when all one had to do, is mention, just in the credits that she regained some poise

I wonder if Macci in reality actually said, like it was said in the movie, that "venus at 14 is twice the talent that jennifer was at 14!" which is B.S. ... jennifer was better than venus at 14 and has the results to prove it, much less that venus was TWICE the talent at jennifer at 14!....

I think they did Jennifer Capriati dirty.
As a tennis prodigy she crashed and burned as an adult she won three grand slams, a gold medal and became a number one player in the world and that's nothing to sh*t on.

NIce, but he should have explained the controversial match/cheating that went on when Jennifer vs
Serena at the u.s open. And the whole stadium was ok with it. Yet states that Jennifer beat the Williams. He states it would have been nice to put Jennifer in the movie. He should have spoken about when African Americans/minorities were even allowed to play tennis. I have an uncle alive today who talks about how they were not allowed to play tennis and golf. Tell the Whole Truth. Then have your wishes for someone else's movie. Almost every history book and movie I have ever seen I have some Icriticisms. Once you know basic truth stuff like this, you can see right through. His heart is not right.

it always comes back to racism right? I never heard venus or serena ever say race got in their way, meanwhile they are both probably two of the richest tennis players (and athletes) to have ever walked the earth. Where's the racism in that?
nothing is holding you back but you.
