    "Battles are won with fists, wars with wits." - Nick Valentine
    I thought the Order of Mysteries was a really interesting story though! Thank you for covering it so thoroughly, Oxhorn! :D

    • @SonsOfLorgar
      @SonsOfLorgar 3 роки тому +2

      And Nick was partially correct, but wits alone does not win wars, that wit needs to be applied to logistics, production capacity, intelligence gathering and analysis in training and strategic deplyment.

    • @lauranimbus8092
      @lauranimbus8092 3 роки тому +1

      @@SonsOfLorgar A good point. Yes, I agree. :) Intelligence or wits alone without experience, or team members with experience, cannot win wars. Conversely one could have all those elements in place and defined yet lack the intelligence to use them properly. One could also "make no mistakes and sill lose" (a quote from Captain Picard), which throws all duality out the window entirely in the face of the sheer unpredictability of life.
      There is an interesting aspect, I think, to Nick's quote that exemplifies that point: Someone can literally destroy another person or country through sheer might or tactical employment. However, the battle or war can be considered won for the better when violence can be avoided and both sides working through their differences. The irony of it all being that this is a comment made by Nick in the midst of a vast wasteland that is the result of a 'battle won with fists'.
      Sorry if I kinda rambled here. You're answer made me realize more possible lines of thought to Nick's quote than I first imagined. Thank you. :)

    Olivia was a spoiled entitled brat, but some of her criticisms of her mother aren’t unreasonable. Shannon turning away people who aren’t orphaned girls, including probably orphaned boys could have been her wanting to help the most vulnerable of all people, but I wonder if there was a little bit of sexism involved there. Then there is the fact that Shannon put so much effort into training for the MoM television role - a role that it seemed everyone at Hubris except her knew she’d never get. And by undertaking that training regimen, Shannon alienated Olivia. Then there is your observation that this Order basically did everything Shannon’s way - Shannon’s tactics, Shannon’s doctrine, Shannon making all important decisions with little to no delegation of authority. Not to mention the inflexibility - from what I’ve seen so far, all their missions were solo missions where stealth and Mêlée were the only weapons available. Could that “suicide mission” of hers been less risky if she’d sent a squad with different skill sets? Could some girls have survived ambushes had they been given the flexibility of being given a bigger gun, explosive grenades, sturdier armor and maybe a “buddy” to watch her back?
    I think Olivia was right when she criticized Shannon for “living out a comic book fantasy” - Shannon became way too invested in this Mistress of Mystery role. I think she only took in young girls because she wanted to transform them all into the comic book superheroine she brought to life. The tactical inflexibility was a result of her wanting to be the Mistress of Mystery, much more than her wanting to solve problems. And because she was LARPing as the Mistress of Mystery - a solitary stealthy character, she never understood the particular challenges an organizational leader has to contend with - one of which includes being aware that if you promote someone, someone else was passed over and you have to properly mollify that person to keep them invested. Then there is the fact that she never sought the advice and counsel of any of her lieutenants - her leadership style seemed to be top down one sided. I think she deliberately avoided contact with the more professional organizations such as the BoS and responders, because if she coordinated with them, she couldn’t be “the Mistress of Mystery” anymore - she’d be forced to change her Order, change tactics, change doctrine, probably even lose some members.

      @@seshthecat Well, her mom had high expectations but never treated her badly. Reading her journals, it seems Olivia was frustrated with no longer being special (referring to the other girls as "rats") and not being the center of attention. Being passed over for promotion was just the last straw. But rather than take your frustrations any, you know, leaving she decided to kill everyone. It was selfish and stupid.
      Are her criticisms valid? Maybe. But the adult response to unreconcilable disagreements is to part ways, not to murder anything and everything in your way out of jealousy.

    My thought is that Frederic probably passed a few years before the final confrontation between Olivia and Shannon, as he sounded older and frail in his final recording, which would explain why some decisions later made by Shannon seems so naive or even cold. She would have been blinded by grief and come to rely on Olivia, so she would be the last person she would expect to betray them.
    When it comes down to it, Frederic held them both up with his love and compassion, considering the lengths he had gone to support his wife and raise their daughter when Shannon was away. Without him, there was just too big of a rift between Shannon and Olivia, and his death would only make that rift feel wider for Olivia.

    • @yanderefangirl8317
      @yanderefangirl8317 3 роки тому +9

      That’s a good theory. But if Frederick was still alive at this point, then it’s likely that the Order being destroyed, his daughter’s betrayal, and losing everyone he loved would have likely driven him insane. I can imagine Frederick being in deep denial about what had happened and living somewhere else, tinkering away as though he was building weapons for his wife like before.

    A defense of Shannon Rivers' decision to adopt and conscript the girls:
    It is the job of any parent to prepare their child for the world they live in, to the absolute best of their ability. Shannon wasn't well versed as a teacher, that's not something you can do just by knowing the material, teaching is its own skill. What she Was well-versed in was in kicking ass, and in just how hostile the outside world had become. She knew that she had to make sure the girls were ready to kick ass as well, to give them a fighting chance.
    In a peaceful world, you prepare your children to compete by ensuring they have a solid education, basic life skills, the list goes on. In a lawless post-nuclear hellscape, you prepare your children to shoot first, to defend their lives down to their last breath, and in terms of Shannon's teachings, to protect others, because no one else will.
    As for Olivia, she was the daughter of a rich actress, given everything on a financial level, but receiving very little in terms of affection, because Shannon was always busy. One doesn't become a well paid actress by sitting on one's laurels, after all. Her refusal to acknowledge Shannon's husband as a father figure, combined with the constant "Oh, she's just stubborn like her mom" excusing being done by basically everyone in her life, lead to a series of behaviors built on entitlement, fueled by her interpretation of neglect. In the end, Brodie served her in the same way that so many others in her life probably did, people she could manipulate to do her bidding, and in the end, Brodie very likely saw the situation in much the same way, albeit with a bit more vengeance involved. What she saw as a boy she used to play with, he likely saw as an entitled little brat who would demand that they play things Her way, every time, who would bully him and push him around as a means of lashing out over her neglectful home situation. Brodie strikes me as an opportunist, and saw the Raider gang as an opportunistic home, and when it turns out the girl who killed his raider brethren was not only willing to give up her own kind as leverage for something she thought she could get, but that that girl was someone who tormented his childhood, he likely had a moment of realization that everything was falling into place for him perfectly.
    Olivia thought she was running the board, but in the end, she got knocked down only to realize she had been a pawn all along.

    • @teacoon6399
      @teacoon6399 5 років тому +1

      But why only adopt the girls? You honestly can't tell me they never came across boys who were the age of five, six, and seven before. Whether Shannon made the right choice or not - she still is the reason as to why Olivia turned out the way she did.

      @Blaydon I don't think Fallout 76 could do mods... simply because it's an online-multiplayer game and Bethesda owns the servers. The only way modding would be possible would be to host Fallout 76 on a server of your own somehow, then mod that. The alternative would be to somehow mod Bethesda's servers, as I believe client modding (which is what all previous fallout games relied upon) would be impossible. And I don't think they'd go for that.

      Bethesda has to do something to regain them trust of the players or they risk no longer being considered a AAA developer but just a buch of hacks and pretenders.

    Honestly, what Shannon Rivers should've done was make meaningful alliances or at the very least become said factions' spy networks. She forgot the time-proven motto "United we stand, divided we fall." Instead, she held on to the delusion that they'd be safer if they just stayed hush-hush about the organization. Even without Olivia, they would've eventually get wiped out.

  • @Dervraka
    @Dervraka 4 роки тому +12

    Definitely one of the best questlines in Fallout 76. But I can't help but imagine how much better it would have been in a living, breathing world. Imagine the quest starting similar to the way it does already with you finding a dead Mistress. This leads you to the mansion, but instead of finding it empty and long dead you find the few remaining members of the Order fending of a raider attack. You gain their trust and learn that their members are being killed off by raiders and they don't know why. The main questline would follow the same plot with you going on missions, gaining ranks, and discovering Olivia is the traitor. But in the end you would have a choice in either siding with Shannon Rivers and the Order or with Olivia and the raiders. If you side with the Order and kill Olivia and raiders, Shannon declares she is too old to continue and can't bear it after Olivia's betrayal, she turns the Order over to you. You then can recruit new members, send them on missions to gather resources or have them follow you as companions

    I’ve played through this entire quest line twice. The first time inspired me to create another character specifically to be a Mistress. It’s turned out to be my favorite build. I use all the items every game each time I play. I also stacked her perks specifically to use those items. The Garb effectively eliminates any need for armor repairs, just leveling it. The Blade of Bastet, when combined with the right perks, is absolutely devastating. So much so, that I have killed Deathclaws, Wendigos, and Scorchbeasts in close combat. In spite of having handgun perks leveled through Master Gunslinger, the Voice of Set is a bit disappointing - it really ought to do more damage than it does. The electrical effect vs. robots takes a second or two to for full effect. The Veil is a great alternative to a gas mask or Fire Breather helmet, since it doesn’t affect perception. I’m glad I went with this as a build.

But it doesn't matter anyway, cause regardless of the altitude no human body would remain in nearly perfect state with a pool of blood around them after almost 2 decades, which is when we find them. It's either just another one of thousand oversights by the devs, or possibly intentional choice to evoke more emotion from us players (probably wouldn't be as dramatic if it was 2 dried up skeletons with missing limbs stolen by wild animals). This logical manner to her is self centered. Who to promote? Your own child. How do you survive? Taking what you need. To her way of thinking the raiders are part of a natural "order" even if they are "a mess"
    Meanwhile the Order of Mysteries is completely illogical to her. They help others for nothing in return. They're hypocrites, choosing who to save while the raiders dont care who they attack. For Olivia there is no "order" in the Order of Mysteries because she sees survival of the fittest as the only means of order

    Actually, I kind of understand Olivia's motivation. Since the beginning, it has been hinted that her family had great expectations from her... and maybe, she just wanted a regular life. Consider that she was always the daughter of the great Shannon Rivers, the voice of the Mistress of Mysteries and it is something that you cannot easily shake up: always having people looking at you and comparing you with your own mother it's an annoying burden to live with. Also, I kind of understand the motivation for Shannon to adopt only girls: It was the only way to preserve her legacy and since her and Frederick based their lives on those comic books, there wasn't a space for a male sidekick on their way of life. Finally, i do think that membership to the Order of Mysteries was optional: They still played as a refuge for girls without a home and I do think that there still were some sweet, naive girls that didn't have the required skills to adopt that way of living.

    I speculated that this drama about the Rivers could have happened from the beginning (except the cancel the trip to the mountain part), Olivia may have feel envy to the orphans about Shannon being favoring to them instead of her (and the boys) to the part of being in her mother organization, which i also predicted that she would feel this is ridiculous as well

    I feel in some way, the Order of Mysteries compares to the Railroad in a way.
    The secrets, the only accepting one type of person in, not really showing to other groups etc.
    I kinda believe that maybe a brotherhood alliance would be a bad thing, due to having Cryptos as an operating center with tracking of high tech items and military bases would be a very bad thing to have taken from the order at its time.
    As for the Responders, the order could have benefitted by having one or two order members, on missions to help guard responder areas or do missions the responders couldn't. Plus the payment could have been supplies or other information of local groups, towns and even raider locations.. and at least the Responders would be better chancd of keeping secrets then the Brotherhood as we have seen in previous titles.

  • @lostbutfreesoul
    @lostbutfreesoul 5 років тому +12

    One must also remember that Olivia's reasoning came after *years* of observation, and while it is easy to see the actions she took as wrong in hindsight....
    Was the base reasons really that flawed?
    At the very beginning she saw male orphans, even ones she knew personally, being turned away while the female orphans where 'adopted' just to become part of the order. Then she saw her order killing hundreds of people over those years, taking things in 'scavenger runs' and doing nothing to really give back to the community unlike other groups. In the end she clearly viewed herself as nothing more then a highly trained raider... the strongest of the strong who should take over the the most dominate roles, a common view for people who have lived too long in violence. This a person who was struggling at the very beginning to find herself, dealing with new sensations and emotions that we all went through at that age, and instead of being given the freedom to do so... was trained to be a soldier in someone else's war.
    While it is easy to say these actions where caused by 'entitlement' or 'jealousy,' would Olivia have felt that way if her mother had run a *real* orphanage that gave back to the community?
    I can't help but think adopting Brody would have caused this to go down a very different path, and not just by removing him from the raider gang. It might be the romantic in me, but I heard something in those earlier tapes when Olivia talked about Brody being turned away... a budding sexual desire of a young teen. It isn't hard to see this causing even more resentment between the two, which then festered as Shannon embraced the role of 'head mistress' first and foremost. Olivia concluding that Shannon was delusional, justifying her own acts of killing and scavenging by telling herself she was just targeting 'bad guys,' didn't suddenly stem from nothing....
    This does not excuse Olivia of the very selfish actions to escape that situation, those other girls where in the same boat as her and didn't deserve her misdirected anger, but I can see why she concluded her mother was just another Raider leader when I look at it from that angle.

    • @lostbutfreesoul
      @lostbutfreesoul 5 років тому +3

      I thought I might add some more to this, as 'deranged good-guy' is an old narrative:
      In an ancient role playing game, Rifts by Palladium, Central America has a very big vampire problem. A group of elite vampire hunters formed and begun to drive back the wave of undead, using their holy might and magic as spectacularly as possible. This group would then go town to town, singing their own praises the whole time, and due to the fact they where killing a very dangerous enemy they where usually well received by those who lived within. The entire time you are learning about this group it is written that they are heroes in this story, until you remember this was a 'grim-dark' universe.
      For you see, if a town didn't give them the praise or payments these hunters believed they where due... they would just leave. When they returned to find the village destroyed they would begin a 'holy crusade' to avenge the town, and in doing so their 'good guy' reputation would grow. They also thought nothing of 'scavenging' the remains of the village in order to re-supplying themselves. The delusional nature of their leader was so strong it prevented the whole group from even considering their own roles in the death and destruction around them, for all they where doing was avenging those murdered by vampires and their spawn.
      It might be mention the fact the Order of Mysteries survived by scavenging that made me sit up in my chair and wonder just how noble their 'war against Raiders' actually was.....

    I have to disagree on your final view of both Olivia and The Order, for three main reasons.
    1. I'm honestly not okay with an organization that kills raiders by employing what are essentially child soldiers. What the lore seems to hint at is that these girls, orphans, may have still been in their teens when they began fighting, learning how to kill a man, how to shoot them dead, or where to strike with a sword. All of this done in the name of creating heroes no one could know about?
    2. Shannon sadly was a woman consumed by her work and the character she created before the bombs dropped, and did not change afterwords. Her work just became real. Instead of an apocalypse teaching her to care for the family she had, when she created the order, she simply became obsessed with it instead. Funny how after the order was founded, she and Olivia never again interact as mother and daughter. Olivia had a point. Shannon gave her approval to Olivia, not as a mother to their daughter, but as a commander to their subordinate. Even in her dying breath, Shannon never said she loved Olivia. Instead, she was willing to kill her to protect the order. Shannon was a flawed, broken woman who took solace in the only thing that made sense to her after the bombs dropped, and sadly, that meant leaving her family behind.
    3. And Olivia. Yes, she was wrong in what she did. Yes, she was naive. But she was molded. Her mother didn't shelter her daughter after the bombs dropped. She didn't train her. She used her. When Shannon said Olivia was far more dangerous than a raider, who made her that, exactly? Shannon did. When Olivia broke off, who could have stopped it? Her mother. She only ever wanted her mom's approval. Her love. Her care. Without any of that, Olivia went for the only thing that made sense, and was preyed upon and used by the raiders Shannon obsessed over.

    It would have absolutely been wiser to work with the Responders. Not openly, but they should have been coordinating in secret. Shannon let the character that gave her strength take her over, for good and ill. Olivia did have one good point, and that was that they had let comic-bookisms get a little too far into their heads. The Brotherhood the hammer, the Responders the shield, and the Order of Mysteries the mysterious shadow that comes in and stabs in the back while the raiders are busy dealing with the overt threat. If only they had formed some sort of organization of Unstoppables, they could have stopped Thorpe and brought an end to the organized raider threat. Instead, no. And divided, Appalachia fell.

    I have two points on this. 1 This story does have a happy ending, several vault 76 dwellers find this path and take up the mantle of the Mistress of Mysteries, myself included, and the Order of Mysteries lives on even after such a great tragedy with lessons to take away from the tragedy so that the Second Founding of the Order of Mysteries is stronger than before.
    2 Despite the comic book origins they never learned the lesson Batman always has to reach out to others for help, and I'm not just talking about the immediate Bat Family, like Commisioner Gordon and all of his allies on the outside, even other heroes such as the Justice League. The Order of Mysteries could have reached out to the Responders or the Brother hood and stayed in the shadows but helping both.

She was about 18 when the bombs dropped (talking about going to college) And the end of their story comes at the end of 2086. That's more than 9 years that she had to grow up and she just got more petulant and childish. As near as we can tell she was older than all of the girls that Shannon "adopted" and could have been a big sister to them. She wasn't! Kind of sounds like a sociopath.

      The Mistresses are NOT guerilla fighters. They're vigilantes. They were just trying to contain the chaos. It was the settlers these raiders were looting who were trying to rebuild.
      These raiders killed everyone who was in their way and took what they wanted, regardless of how many people they murdered to get there or how many people starve to death because of their actions. And they're not evil, but, the Mistresses are?

      Late 20s is still young (especially if that means 18 when the bombs dropped, she was thrust into a brutal world at a young age). Reminds me a bit of how the one factor connecting all the terrible Roman emperors (Caligula, Nero, Commodus) is that they became emperor as children or teenagers. Imagine any high school boy being made king of a nation and revered as a God, it's clearly a recipe for disaster. And many of the best emperors became emperor much later in life, after they had already achieved success on their own as a general or statesman. Also reminds me of some of these NFL players who do incredibly dumb things that ruin their careers, but we have to remember they're becoming multi-millionaires and celebrities in their early 20s, when most people get to be stupid and make mistakes without serious consequence later in life. Olivia isn't becoming emperor or achieving celebrity, but the Mistress training she receives is another form of power that clearly her 20-something year old self isn't mature enough to handle responsibly. She is the outlier as the other girls don't go evil, but maybe it was risky training children to be special forces soldiers and go on combat missions in the first place.

    "If she wants order, why turn to chaos?"
    A question summed up to the path of destruction she chose, but I think I know why and it was explained through my brother.
    I was playing through this and my bro happened to be watching and after reading through the terminal and getting to this point I wondered the same thing, but my brother pointed something out.
    "Some people become what they hate most, and in this case, it was her mother, the order, what it has become under her mother's rule."
    To sum it up, She seen a chance, an opening to enter a raider gang while it was in chaos, and then provide order. Odds are, they where scared shitless by these phantomes in the night that could take down full squads, and seeing we are talking about a world with ghosts, monsters, cryptids, and other horrors, who is to tell them that it wasn't some mystical force just destroying their squads.
    She seen a chance to take control, show the ghosts that hunt them are flesh and blood, and from there, teach them how to hunt them in turn if she couldn't do the job herself.
    In short, she would become her mother and "adopt" this raider gang, and have them go out on missions after training them to do like she dose. Maybe this was just a fanticy in her head, that maybe this would be the only way for the world to work and thus nothing would go wrong, but we are talking about raiders and their cruel and using nature after all... From there, well, we see this story and how it ends. She saved her mother for last, maybe it was because it was her mother, and in some way still had some place in her heart for her, or maybe its the cruel side of letting her watch everyone she cared for die, one by one.
    In one way, it makes her death a bit more sad... knowing she had forced herself into this. Maybe if only from the stand point that she done it, and would only come to regret it. But in another, for her to die after, brings an ironic twist, where she done it out of this cruel nature, letting her mother be the last one, see everyone she love die and then be betrayed by her own daughter... but only then to have been killed by someone she thought she could trust.
    Ether way... I still think she wanted to join the raiders and try to mold them to be like the order, but keep some of the cruel ways, so to have this twist in the end for her, to be betrayed by the raiders she wanted to adopt makes me wonder what the raiders where thinking... not that it was a poor choice, but given how some may act, I wonder if learning she planned to kill her own mother and what she did to her order... what would she do if the raiders didn't become what she wanted, what she seen as perfect...

    But with the Order... It felt visceral, real in a way that joining the responders didn't. That all felt rote, routine, and frankly boring. I only did those quests to get the markers out of my pip boy. As I went through, it was easy to see that it was probably going to be Olivia who was the traitor, but I still found myself hoping I was wrong, that it was a raider who'd joined up and was working that angle. I completed the last quest feeling heartbroken and horrified, the feelings only growing stronger the further I went, and listening to the holotape on Shannon's body while looking at the corpses - not skeletons, like a lot of other similar situations in other fallout games, but still largely-intact corpses with recognizable features - was moving in a way I've rarely felt while playing a video game before. Bethesda may have mucked up some of their other quests and questlines in fo76, but they absolutely NAILED this one. Becoming a mistress of mystery was bittersweet, having worked for it while also knowing that I was the last(as I'm a solo player), and that the Order was dead.
    And there was something about playing this from the perspective of a vault Dweller who's walking into and through a still-freshly decimated world that makes stories of betrayal like this all the more heartrending than say, in fallout 4, where it's easier to become more detached and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about it, because you know that the world has changed vastly, and it's been 200years, that lends itself to a feeling of.... maybe more resignation? You know that this isnt the world you left, but it's been 200 years, this probably happens all the time. It's harder to feel more upset coming across these stories when you're looking at a skeleton, or the corpse of a wastelander when you've spent hours wandering the commonwealth and seeing for yourself just how bad things have gotten. In fo76, that's easy toforget, because there are no live raiders, no real constant reminders of that the way there is in the single player games where you constantly run across enemy humans.

    I don't know even if she cut Olivia out she may have been even worse. Imagine her returning with raiders with her training or her own crew.
    Yes she made some crap choices, but there is a point when Shannon should have noticed that maybe she should be the mother to her daughter just a bit more than to the others especially when she's been severely lacking in that area. So yeah, it's a betrayal when the one that's supposed to love and guide you gives more to others and claims to love everyone equally.
    To Olivia her mother was starting over instead of putting in the work to fix what was damaged. It may be an unpopular opinion but it started with Shannon and her husband. When you fuck up a kid, it is the bedrock of the fuck up even if/when you or the child gets help to fix it.
    Discarding the boys was a bad call as well. Sexism aside, she turned away a great resource in the form of spies, infiltration agents and even ambassadors. Felt like she was trying to prove a point than really make a difference.
    Shannon ran a lousy ship and didn't even acknowledge it. Real life and fiction has shown that the thing that will destroy you is likely of your own creation. She created the demon and it killed her. Her husband works have intervened properly that i agree on, but considering that he made all of this possible by making the hero base, keeping out of her business and doing less than bare minimum to help mend his family... Well, we were probably expecting too much from him. His overall irrelevance to the arc was proven with us not even knowing what happened to him.
    That's my rant Oxhorn, good video!

    I theorize that her daughter betrayed them because if you notice, there are no men there other than one. So, leader gets to have her husband and all the others must be without a man. With her daughters serious issues with her mother, this drove her to seek a man in the only place she could, a raider gang which allowed him to manipulate her into betrayal. Of course, the history of him being turned away certainly gives him motivation to hate her mother.

    Hmm, this is by far the best Fallout 76 lore series you've made so far. Though I cannot help but point out that the reason Olivia's character is, dare I say it, unhinged and sophomoric in her reasoning is that she is a one-dimensional character. This is partially due to us never meeting her or any other NPC in Fallout 76, the NPCs are what makes these games great. It's not our fault that when we complained about Preston Garvey's repetitive and annoying nature in Fallout 4, that Bethe$da misinterpreted our critique and made Fallout 76 have no NPCs at all. Again, great series created from a massive insult to the fanbase game. I cannot wait to see what you come up with next.

    Last night I completed this quest, and it was emotionally exhausting. But my takeaway was much different.
    Throughout the quest, I was firmly on the side of Shannon and the Order. She was a firm but kind matron giving safety and purpose to young orphan girls. I was heartbroken to learn Olivia Betrayed her mother and the Order.
    But I was far more heartbroken when we read Olivia's terminal, and we learned the horrifying truth: Shannon turned poor Brody away. Shannon threw Brody to the wind, forcing him to survive the winter and the wasteland alone with no help. He did what he must to survive. Shannon created Brody.
    And the question must be asked: how many other young boys, who only needed help and protection, did Shannon selfishly doom? I'd imagine a heartbreaking amount. It was this moment that I can't help but see the Order in a different light. They were a cult, and Shannon their cult leader.
    Brody being the one to destroy the Order once and for all was beautiful poetic justice.
    I condone not the actions of anyone involved. Not Shannon, not Brody, but certainly not Olivia.

    Olivia is as much a victim in this thing as she is the instigator, for lack of a better word. Olivia most likely felt isolated from her mother due to Shannon putting her work first and always being so hard on Olivia, both before and after the war. It sounds like S&F put a lot of pressure of their daughter and forcing someone to live up to such a high standard can be a strain on their mentality, especially if they feel as though they're not given enough parental love and guidance. Then the war comes and Olivia thinks she'll finally have time to bond with Shannon, but then S goes and starts adopting orphan girls and then starts up the OoM. I think Olivia initially wanted to join the order because she genuinely believes in the mission of the order, but slowly grows disillusioned with her and starts to resent her mother for not giving her the one thing she desperately wanted that she feels she never really got growing up, her mother's love. It sounds like Shannon never once sat down and had a genuine heart to heart talk with her daughter about what's going on. She treated Olivia more like subordinate than a daughter. Frederick is also at fault here. He had the chance to step in and help mend the wound that was festering between the two women, but chose to let them personally work it out despite the fact that Shannon was more focused on treating Olivia like a soldier than a daughter. This neglect from both parents, especially her mother, and strict upbringing both pre and post war turned Olivia into the hate filled, resentful woman she became. She chose to betray the order because she hated her mother and wanted to make her suffer. I'm not saying Olivia isn't a villain in this tale, but I don't think she's as spoiled and self entitled as you make her out to be Ox.

    Its somewhat understandable to me how things could have led to olivias final outlook on things, i dont see it so much as entitlement as that a sequence of circumstances led to he attitude changing, not that its any less her fault. There was of course the camping trip which though it was an important memory for olivia and a meaningfull place for a dramatic conclusion, i dont actually think was that important overall, much more the way shannon seemingly pushed her out of her own bedroom focusing on other girls like they were more important plus the fact that she was allready ready to get away from the house but then was forced to stay cooped up rather than spreading her wings thats is not a situation very conductive to developing a healthy mindset about things, then all the things covered in her journal... idk it all seems fairly understandable to me how given the situation she might develop that resentment, the image i have in my mind isnt so much jealousy but more the result of never being given the time to grow into an adult herself and never getting a break.
