  • Gösta Winbergh wins Eva Johansson :
Walther's Prize Song : Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg : Richard Wagner : Opera (Deutsche untertitel, English subtitles, sous-titres français)
"Morgenlich leuchtend im rosigen Schein/Shining in the rosy light of morning"
I enjoyed this production a lot.
Not for any gauchely obvious reason Götz Friedrich sets "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg" in the 19th century. Recorded at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1995, the cast includes Wolfgang Brendel, Gösta Winbergh, Eva Johansson, & Wilm Schulte. Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos conducts.
    Del Prado, Arthaus Music.

I love Winbergh's enthusiasm and intensity. He's singing of a moment of ecstacy and passion, of finding his beloved and paradise, so his demeanor is exactly right. Whatever the quality of his voice (which I think is prettty good), this is a rousing performance of an aria that is the emotional climax of the opera. Much different then the usual stiff and subdued performance one sees. Bravo.

What an extraordinary performance, he gives all of himself, no wonder he is in the better world now from leaving nothing to himself.

Bravo Gösta! Did anyone else notice the subtle tempo change. Sehr feurig indeed.

+tomalcolm Nothing subtle about it. The conductor accelerates from around 80 beats per minute to something like 108. Feurig indeed.

This is one of my two favorite DVD's of Meistersinger--the other from Bayreuth. It amazed me how Windbergh transformed himself from a Mozart tenor into lirico spinto and his tragic early death robbed the world of many other potential performances. He snag Lohengrin In Los
Angeles and I was so foolish to pass it up realizing his vocal growth,

The armchair critics here are crazy. This is one of the best performances of the Preislied.

Was he really a heldentenor or a full lyric tenor? Cause this is a heldentenor role. And can this piece have a climatic high C?

He was a full lyric tenor. No this piece does not, and cannot have a climactic high C. You do not interpolate in Wagner.

@@biancacastafiore8760 I think in consideration it could also work in a spinto tenor too.
