Edgar Wright has only directed 6 feature films. Take a moment to let that sink in. A Fistful of Fingers, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The World’s End, Baby Driver - each an instant classic in their respective genres. Few filmmakers have been able to create such an impression so quickly and this is not an accident. In this video, our latest installment in The Director’s Chair series, we’ve collected Edgar Wright interviews from throughout his career that collectively explain his filmmaking process.
Long before his beloved Cornetto Trilogy, Edgar Wright movies exhibited a unique visual comedy with his trademark "Edgar Wright Transitions" (aka quick cuts), and a sophisticated approach to flipping genres at the writing stage. Even his short films like A Fistful of Fingers have that “Edgar Wright directing style” written all over them. In his screenwriting, Edgar Wright is openly drawn to genre films, and, as he explains, the formulas they provide become road maps to creativity. Consider the effortless blend of the zombie and romantic comedy subgenres in Shaun of the Dead, or the glowing homage to action films in Hot Fuzz.
Music is also a major element in Edgar Wright movies. In Baby Driver, he wrote the screenplay with specific songs in mind with the plan to edit the scenes to match the music. In fact, he reveals that they created a feature-length animatic, timed to the beat, before shooting even began. But again, this is nothing new - you’ll recall the thrilling execution of the barkeep beatdown set to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” in Shaun of the Dead.
In these Edgar Wright interviews, it becomes immediately apparent that this is a filmmaker in love with his medium. With his visual comedy, trademark "Edgar Wright transitions" (quick cuts), detailed screenwriting methods, and precise storyboarding, Wright is in complete control of his filmmaking. And this gives us, the audience, the ability to just sit back and watch a master at work.

14:54 What's Next for Edgar?
Not many directors use movies as a medium on their own. "Most" movies are meant to look like real life and a lot even tell real stories. Edgar Wright uses evey tool at his disposal to create something new, something that is not life like, something that could not be told the same way on the radio or in a book. He really makes unique movies. I respect him a lot for that. A lof of work goes into what he does. People may consider it silly sometimes but I personallly love it.
Well said, he is a true auteur!
@@StudioBinder Great video as always. Keep up the good work.
Great insight and you're right. The reason I love Edgar Wright is because he makes movies that have to be movies. The frame is a playground that he truly plays in.
But the key thing to me is, it's not *just* over-the-top and silly. What makes the silly stuff work is that it has heart. The style is always in service of the substance. At its core is a good story with relatable characters. No matter how OTT it gets, it's always grounded in something real, and indeed - despite the gore - wholesome.
YES EXACTLY that's what i love about him too!!!!!!!!!!
Edgar Wright is one of my favourite directors.
the beginning of Baby Driver is sooo good...
Ours too!
Him and Fincher and Nolan.
Yep. Mine too. With QT and PTA one of my favorite modern directors.
Edgar Wright IS my favorite director
The distinct thing about Wright: every single detail matters a lot to the style of the movie.
True!
What UA-cam video did you copied that form
No, that's true for every good director. Wright is probably just the first director where you've noticed this.
Man, can't wait for _Last Night in Soho_ !
I'm gonna see it on opening night.
Excited to see it!
if covid ever ends
Edgar Wright is one of the best directors working today. I would put him up there with Nolan, Tarantino, Scorsese, Villenueve, Coen Brothers, Sam Raimi etc
Agreed!
Easily one of my favorite directors. I'd say one of the strongest filmography as well.
and such a small filmography too
Nobody can beat John Cazale’s filmography
@@StudioBinder Quality over quantity
I want Edgar Wright to direct my life he could make anything look awesome
Same
That would be wild
He could be a good director for Bad Boys 4 to make the style and action more awesome.
It is so comforting and inspiring when you feel like you're not doing enough or anything at all, then you hear from the best and realize that you are on the right track 'cause you are doing the things they are saying to do!
Definitely. Most important thing is you keep moving forward, making progress
Found this channel last year and has been one of my favorites ever since. This channel had made me love films even more and appreciate the art of filmmaking. It even came to the point that I even had to keep myself from blurting out trivias, facts, techniques, etc. from the movie that we are watching on movie nights. XD. I just want to say that whatever you are doing, keep it up StudioBinder. Thank you for producing such high-quality contents. Someone, like me, a high-school stident, learns from and appreciates this. Truly, this channel is a gold mine of quality content.
Appreciate the comment! Great to hear our vids are helping you
@@StudioBinder Thank you StudioBinder! Indeed they were a great help!
Love it when filmmakers rise from doing amateur films to feature films. Way to go Edgar!! Also liked when he mention about going into the editing room and just doing something.
I just love his visual comedy ❤️❤️
arguably the best at it!
Studiobinder please do either Paul Thomas Anderson or Bong Joon-ho for the next directors chair 🙏🏾
PTA Style is coming very soon!
@@StudioBinder Holy milkshake!
Edgar Wright is a genius and has not made one movie that I can tear myself away from once ive started it.
He truly deserves to be considered one of the greats, along with the other directors this channel covers.
I feel like he is currently under-appreciated because his films are funny. This has to change!
Thank you, Studio Binder... This made MY WEEK.
Saying a lot since it's only Monday
Hopefully that still holds by Friday 😂
@@StudioBinder With Edgar Wright, it could hold till 2030.
1:19 The intro is Amazing
Cheers!
FINALLY my requested video is here 🔥😩 I hope they do Guy Richie next😭😭
Hope it satisfied!
@@StudioBinder MORE THAN ENOUGH💯🔥
PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING.. Alfred Hitchcock next plzzzzzzzz
I love editing style, and the short close ups, Baby Driver is so great with the mix of music and edition.
A true "action musical"
I cannot explain how much I love this channel... I watch them over and over again, just absorbing the beautiful video essays.
This is great editing. Pure gold!
Edgar wright made my life more beautiful with his movies I luv and respect him ❤️
Something I see filmmakers say all the time is to just make things. Just get out there and do it. I think my fear of making something bad is what holds me back a lot, in all sorts of aspects of life really, so it's inspiring. I think Wright showing off his early stuff is massively helpful. Young directors who are making the same kind of slightly clumsy or "embarrassing" early work can see that it is all part of the process and not to be disheartened. If Edgar Wright, one of the world's greatest movie directors, made stuff like this at my age then I'm on the right track.
This is beautifully edited.
An Edgar Wright video essay from this channel: awesome. I have been waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you studio binder for doing this video.
Long time coming :)
@@StudioBinder Thank you.
I've missed these director's chair videos. Thank you very much!
Not the last of them!
incredible!.... I cant comprehend how creative people in this industry are.
Awesome and good to know I have hours of content that I have shot but still everyday is something new, thanks for this.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for putting this together, it's great.
Cheers!
I’d love to see the illustrated storyboard version for Baby Driver! Edgar is one of my favourite directors along with David Fincher, they’re such individual voices in filmmaking.
Ok,but why is young Edgar Wright so fineeee
It makes so much sense that he made animation when he was younger. The way his movies are laid out, often giving stylishly shot frames to otherwise mundane set pieces like a door being locked, or a shoe being tied, is something I’ve only ever found in animation (particularly anime).
Edgar Wright is everything that is great in this life. His films are funny and clever.
As Wright says, his films are more like Valentines 👌
This video is absolute gold! Thanks so much for this one guys!
Glad you liked it!
I never knew they drew the storyboards of Scott Pilgrim in the style of the comics. That's super cool.
He should direct a Batman or Superman movie
Just realized that all these videos are actually content marketing for your company and tool... This is really content marketing done right! I have been learning a lot about metalanguage and technical choices, as a movie enthusiast not as a professional, from these videos! Keep the great work
Studio brinder always teach me lot especially the drictors name❤️
Amazing video. He's one of my all-time favourite directors since Sean of the Dead.

This is just an observation, but he really looks like Sirius black.
