Wonderful podcast. I love the opening music, O'Donnell Abú. I started my working life as a trainee broadcast technician in the old Radio Eireann building in Henry Street, Dublin. Right next to our training room was the O'Donnell Abú room. The tune takes me back instantly to those rumbustious days late 1960s - early seventies. Later on, 1995, myself and Marie O'Nolan were two founding members of The Bray Writers Centre (now called Abraxas Writers). Marie was married to Kevin O'Nolan (Brian O'Nolan's brother). She was a very accomplished short story writer. Thank you for the podcast.
Thank-you Diarmuid - it'd be fascinating to speak more about these experiences and your collaboration with Marie O'Nolan at some point! Please do email me at tobias.harris@bbk.ac.uk to have a deeper chat about all this.
I read in Anthony Cronin’s fine biography of Myles he supported his mother and 10 siblings after his father died. That he was able to write any novels at all during this period is a miracle.
A great introduction by Doctor Brooker to a brilliant writer, wit and satirist. James Joyce recommended Flann`s first novel " At swim two birds " having read it with a magnifying glass due to his failing sight and called it a great comic novel.
Fascinating stuff
