Got around to checking out this video finally. Very good information for any platform. I may have used Garageband a little now, but I'm still doing most of my stuff, including the mixing, in Cubase. This gave me some things to think about and implement. Cheers!
Thanks so much, Pete. My playhead is stuck in Garageband...no matter where I place the playhead, it returns to @ 9:28 in the project and won't play. There are a lot of tracks in this project (50!) most of which are muted. Including big wav files. I wonder if that is affecting the ability to play. I tried restarting the Mac, quitting the file multiple times, etc. This is an old Mac (2015) running Monterey. Thanks :)
Hmmmm…. Sounds unfortunate. I’m not super proficient with GarageBand Mac. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
Personally I like to dial in compression when recording but leave it as a track effect (not bake it in). That way I can tweak it afterwards when mixing.
Hi Pete, Quick Q? Just found your channel, looks great....i am just about to get a mac, and garageband....i currently record on an old boss br1600cd, and have recorded demo's on there that i'd like to import as either a wav or mp3 onto the mac and into GB and then edit or add to as needed....when i import a file to the mac, will i then be able to seperate tracks individualy, i.e. where i imagine the whole song will be imported as one lump, so to speak, will i then be able to seperate the drums, guitar, keys etc into individual tracks, the tracks have been allocated their own input channels when recording on the Boss , but no reference in the manual how to seperate onto other software. Thought i'd ask before i buy....hope you can help, many thanks,Gary
Hey Gary. Sorry I’m not super familiar with the device here. Depends on whether the recorder can record separate tracks. Maybe jump over and ask at the GarageBand Users or Create Record Release Facebook groups? Http://createrecordreleaae.com
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete, will do....for info all tracks/instruments have been recorded individually and seperately in their own channels on the boss, if that helps? Thanks Gary
When you set your track volumes is there a certain db range you generally set your tracks volume at? I heard to set your track volumes between -10db to -20db.
Hey brother I finished a song video on iMovie but my iPad doesn't allow me to have access to it to upload it's been exported so I don't know why it only allows me to see the camera roll
@@PeteJohnsMusic there’s a loophole I found for every video uploaded I have to restart the iPad that’s the only way it shows me videos on my file folder this is a 6th generation iPad it’s not that old like what the hell my android performance better Than that everything is updated too.
Pete.... I swear I can barely hear compression and only if I’m listening to the biggest one making a full pass. Plenty of sound engineers fake it. Does FAC have anything like a compressor ?
Hey Pete, I have a question, I’ve been using GarageBand iOS with my iRig HD 2 for a couple of years now with no issues, but the last few months I’ve been having issues with the metronome clicks in GarageBand. So my iPad is connected to my iRig, and my iRig is connected to my headphones and also to one of my guitars (whichever one I’m using). When all that is connected the GarageBand app and I’m trying to record something using the IAA I cannot hear the metronome clicks, none, it’s completely silent. I have tried going into the settings and adjust things and nothing works. Also, if I lay down a drum beat or track it will not let me hear the beat, it’s the weirdest thing and very frustrating because I can’t record without a metronome. At first, I thought the iRig itself was having issues, but when I connect it to my headphones, my guitar, the iPad and use another app other than GarageBand, like Tonebridge or Amplitube, it works and I get sound through it. But for some reason I cannot get the neutrons click sound in GarageBand anymore. Like I said, it used to work perfectly fine. Do you have any suggestions???
Hmmmm…. Strange one? Sometimes iOS updates can cause unintended issues like this so it may be that? IAA is being deprecated (eventually anyway) and folks are having some issues with it. My immediate advice would be to move to an amp sim that uses AUv3 and see if that works? Maybe ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group or our Discord server. studiolivetoday.com/discord

Again, this is probably the most important video you watch on getting a good sound out your song. Great job Pete!

Enjoyable video! The sound quality of the GB iOS instruments are so insanely good. Love that drum and brass sound!
Totally! Super impressive isn't it?

Should i record live drums with compression first, or add it after? Thanks

Where do you get your horn packs from? I’ve been struggling to find horn sounds that I like!
Hey there. So, I tend to use mostly that included GarageBand sounds. iSymohinic is good for stings and brass too.
When you set your track volumes is there a certain db range you generally set your tracks volume at? I heard to set your track volumes between -10db to -20db.
Yup. I aim for around a -12db peak on most tracks.
Hey brother I finished a song video on iMovie but my iPad doesn't allow me to have access to it to upload it's been exported so I don't know why it only allows me to see the camera roll
That’s odd. You should be able to just save it to the camera roll and upload it from there. 👍😎

How loud should instruments be in a mix?
7… no wait, 8!
Sorry! Just trying to be funny. And risking. 😀
It all depends I’m afraid. Not really any shortcuts.
