I'm not a big fan of maiming protagonists anyway. I get it, it's "grounded" but idc about grounded in that regard. It becomes a distraction, and also ruins grounding in other ways. People sometimes die from amputations done in hospitals, nevermind in a post-apocolyptic wasteland. Nevermind that it decommissions you for a long time while your body is using all it's energy to keep off infections and heal. It would essentially be a death sentence. If the acute effects didn't kill you, the loss of ability in a world where the smallest disadvantage can get you killed is too much to overcome.
