Bobby Darin had a lot of hits, and yes, he was a "dreamboat" back in the day. Check out Mack The Knife (his biggest hit), Splish Splash (his earliest hit), Beyond the Sea, and If I Were A Carpenter.
What always amazed me about him is none of the songs really sound similar. Yes they do in that Bobby was singing them but they just seem so different from one another and I think that is what makes him so good.
This is great. Old songs are so timeless. It’s literally hidden treasure for a young man, like you Jovaughn. The poor guy, had such a short life 37 he was only a boy when he died.
Bobby Darin was one of the great ones!! His biggest hit was Mack The Knife, & the best version I ever heard him do is live on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1959. It's available on youtube & is one song every music lover should hear!! My favorite Bobby Darin song is Artificial Flowers!! Very sad lyrics with one of the most swingingest arrangements you'll ever hear. Clementine is another standout. So many other great songs!! BTW - Bobby wrote this song, & several others he recorded early in his career, including his first hit, Splish Splash. Jump into the Bobby Darin rabbit hole. You'll be soooooo glad you did!
He married Sandra Dee and he had a heart ailment and knew he wouldn't live to an old age. Also growing up he found out his mother was his grandmother and his sister was his mother
Bobby Darin had one of the greatest voices of all-time. And so smooth. Check out "More" The definition of a hip love song. Though, "Mack the Knife" is considered one of the quintessential songs of the 50's. He also did one of my favorite Christmas songs, "Christmas Auld Lang Syne."
Nice one, Jay. One of the finest voices in pop music. This song was a smash hit in the US and is well known worldwide also. Older baby boomers "wore out the vinyl" on inexpensive record players and danced to it after school at the local "malt shop" teen hangout. Simpler times; teenagers usually had more fun together than nowadays..
Love Bobby! Sammy Davis Jr called him "the greatest entertainer in the world." Please check out Beyond the Sea, More & Once Upon A Time (there's a live version here on YT that's mesmerizing)
UK #1 in 1959. Brings back memories of a caravan holiday to Brightlingsea (my family lived in London) where there was a juke box which played 78s. This seemed to be playing all of the time 😃 and the sound from those speakers impressed the 12 year old me.
Bobby Vee was another artist from the same era. 'Take Good Care Of My Baby', 'Rubber Ball', and, 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes', are a few of his most well-known songs.
I have been following your channel for a while now, and I am really happy that you like this kind of music. I grew up listening to this music but I am not from this era I was born way after. I remember you reacted to Jackie Wilsons "Lonely Teardrops", and I believe Del Shannons "Runaway". This is how singers voices were back then...Real smooth, and on key all of the time. That was great music all the way. This made a stamp on history, and will continue to do so for many generations to come.
I first heard this song in the summer of 1960, when I was 2 months shy of my 4th birthday: That's when my parents put a red plastic clock-radio on the nightstand in my room, in the hopes that the music from the radio would put me to sleep when it was bed time. It worked. But it also imprinted many songs from the period into my soul. And this is one of those.
I'm glad you picked this one!!!! So good..better than Mariah lol💞✌ How about another oldie doo wop: Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler ? You will love it too!!
Bobby Darin had a great voice and quite a few hits back in the day. For a romantic Bobby Darin song, I recommend that you listen to "More". Thanks for commenting on his song.
Hey Jay! Wow! You picked a winner this time! I grew up listening to Bobby Darin. His voice is smooth as silk. You will enjoy going down his rabbit hole. Bobby also was an actor as well, he was born in 1936 and passed in 1973. You would enjoy his songs, so beautiful. "Beyond the Sea" and "Splish Splash are two fantastic favorites you would enjoy! 💕💕
Lead Drummer of the FOO FIGHTERS just died at age 50. VERY FEW reactors are even acknowledging that. Hope you do a Foo Fighters reaction this week. RIP Taylor
It's good to see you are broadening your appreciation for music in the 50's thru the 90's. My era is the 60's, 70's and 80's. I have requested reactions for TOM BROWNE'S "FUNKIN FOR JAMAICA" 1980 from several host of UA-cam channels over the past 4 months with no results. This song is a tribute to JAMAICA, QUEENS, NEW YORK. The song has one of the greatest basslines that makes it impossible to remain still, unless one has a hole in their soul. My recommendations never disappoint. Thanks PEACE OUT
Jay please do platters- smoke gets in your eyes, the five satins- in the still of the night , gene chandler- duke of earl. These are three of the best songs from this era…. Trust me…
@@JayveeTV Who Put the Bomp, by Barry Mann is another great doo wop song. (Not that Bobby Darin was really doo wop- he was more like swing and pop). Also, Dion- I Wonder Why, Earth Angel, by the Penguins, There's a Moon Out Tonight by the Capris, Blue Moon by the Marcels, Little Star by the Elegants, and Those Oldies but Goodies by Little Caesar and the Romans.
I grew up when the 70s were supposed to be "my era" of music. While I liked the soft pop of those years, the 50s and 60s (pre-British invasion) were my favorite eras mostly because of songs like this.
Bobby could act too. I recommend one of the truly great movies: Captain Newman M.D. filled with superstar actors of the time Gregory Peck lead and Bobbies first movie. I think he was nominated for an Oscar
oh yeah you picked a winner with him!!! So so smooth - and and so many good songs. Shame he died so young - only 37 (born with a wonky heart). Try his songs Beyond the Sea and Mack the Knife!!!
Today would have been my dad's 86th b'day n when u get into it n start grooving n bopping n enjoying the song u reminded me a great deal of him. Very nice memories. Thank u much J! Happy Birthday Dad🥳 Have u seen the movie Dirty Dancing? U might enjoy it!
He started his career as a songwriter for "Connie Francis". He was an American singer, musician & actor. He performed all styles of music such as jazz, pop, rock & roll, folk, swing, & country music. He had many hits from the late 50's-60's such as "Splish Splash", "Mack The Knife", "Beyond The Sea", "Things", "You're The Reason I'm Living", "18 Yellow Roses" & "If I Were A Carpenter". Darin married actress Sandra Dee in 1960 whom he met while filming the movie "Come September". Darin suffered from poor health his entire life & died in 1973 at the age of only 37.
Nice summary of this man's unbelievably active and varied career .. So much massive talent, but sadly packed into such a short life .. He was a legend for sure ! .. Wayne
Hey Jay! New to the channel, from down Under. Love your youthful enthusiasm to the old songs. Like you have an old soul. About to have a late night marathon with you, starting at 2am. Love your channel my man!
Another great 50s song is Chantilly Lace by the Big Bopper. Watch it live and you'll never forget it. He died young in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens, great singers themselves.
Ooh, one of my favorite 50's songs!!! Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" (one word) was a huge #1 hit from the summer of 1993, so that's definitely one you should hear. :)
MY Favorite 50's / 60's Artist! Bobby Darin was married to the FAMOUS actress; Sandra Dee. They had one son; Todd. Jayvee, PLEASE do the 80s artist: When In Rome, "The Promise". Believe me, You will not be disappointed. THANKS for considering!!!
Beyond the Sea a 2004 biopic with Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth. Lots of Darin hits. Mack the Knife was his biggest. Great you’re covering so many and one from my childhood🎉❤
This came out in 1959.. I was 10 at the time and my older sister played it endlessly on our 45 rpm player. I still have it on 45 Vinyl. Have you heard his hit Mack The Knife ?
There was a show back in the 80's called rags to riches starring Tisha Campbell- Martin that's the first time I heard that song the show was based in the late 50's early 60's and they sang a lot of classic pop amd soul music
If you like Bobby Darin, I'm sure you will like Dion (aka, Dion and the Belmonts) very similar sound at around the same time (early to mid 1960s) doo-wop and early rock & roll.
Perfect, perfect, perfect choice. One of my all-time favorite singers. Such a shame he died so young. He should have continued his career for a long, long time and been revered today.
Yes. I’m a 70 year old American and the hit I think of first if someone mentions Bobby Darin Mack the Knifeis the song I think of first. I know he had older hits but I think Mack the Knife was his biggest🕺🏽
My favorite song of his. Had many great songs. Mack the Knife. Things, if I were a Carpenter, Beyond the Sea and more. Great singer and performaner. Was being groomed for the next Sinatra, true story. Sadly he died very young, age 38. RIP!
Here is another singer from that era Ivory Joe Hunter Some of his song are magic ( Empty Arms /Since i met you baby/I Almost lost my mind / A Girl i used to know ) are just a few of his hits
You may have already heard some of his songs, but you should check out some Sam Cooke. Legendary singer who died too young. "Bring It On Home To Me," "Tennessee Waltz," "Nothing Can Change This Love," and "That's Where It's At." are some of my favorites.
Bobby Darin had a lot of hits, and yes, he was a "dreamboat" back in the day. Check out Mack The Knife (his biggest hit), Splish Splash (his earliest hit), Beyond the Sea, and If I Were A Carpenter.

Agree with all of these!!
All good songs.
Interesting. I have only heard Frank Sinatra's version of Mack the Knife.
SPOT ON!!!!
Singers of the 50's had strong, clear voices and they hit every note on the mark.
50's and early 60's had the most romantic dance music
This is great. Old songs are so timeless. It’s literally hidden treasure for a young man, like you Jovaughn. The poor guy, had such a short life 37 he was only a boy when he died.
My mom used to listen to Bobby Darin, and I remember this song well. Sadly Bobby died at a very young age, but he had a wonderful voice. Thanks Jay

J, His "Mack The Knife" and "Splish Splash" are next for you!!
Yes Mack the Knife is the best.
One of the greatest singers ever. You have to watch him sing he had a unique style.
Bobby Darin not only singing this, he also wrote it. He wrote a few songs that became hits for him. He co-wrote "Splish Splash" also.
He died really young and fought for civil rights. He was a good man.
He married Sandra Dee and he had a heart ailment and knew he wouldn't live to an old age. Also growing up he found out his mother was his grandmother and his sister was his mother

Bobby Darin was an amazing talent and a pure singer
Beyond the Sea
You said exactly what I was thinking. The voice in older songs is front and centre. It had to be good. 💕
Sam Cooke - What A Wonderful World is the next hidden gem
Falling love music, my parents danced to this before and after they got married!
Mack the Knife was his biggest hit but he had many...Splish, Splash and If I were a Carpenter, just to name a few.

The curtain falls by Bobby Darin
Perfect, perfect, perfect choice. One of my all-time favorite singers. Such a shame he died so young. He should have continued his career for a long, long time and been revered today.
Mack the knife is still sung in karaoke in every pub in Glasgow, amazing how these timeless classics never get old.
Yes. I’m a 70 year old American and the hit I think of first if someone mentions Bobby Darin Mack the Knifeis the song I think of first. I know he had older hits but I think Mack the Knife was his biggest🕺🏽
